4 Reception of Communion and Concluding Rites The Mass approaches its climax in the preparation and reception of Holy Communion and with this begins an even deeper connection to the celebration of Passover and the sacrifice of the Mass. Jesus is the Lamb of God we hear this throughout the New Testament. The priest, while we sing or recite the Lamb of God (which again draws our hearts to the theme of Passover) breaks or fractions the Host and places a small portion in the Chalice with the Precious Blood and recites (to himself) May the mingling of the Body and Blood of Christ bring eternal life to us who receive it. After genuflecting in adoration and reciting (again to himself) a prayer of preparation making him worthy to partake in Holy Communion elevates the Blessed Host and Chalice and calls the congregation to: Behold the Lamb of God! Behold Him who takes away the sins of the world! Blessed are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb! We in turn respond with the sentence Lord, I am not worthy that you should come under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed. This prayer is both honest and powerful. If we have followed the Sacrifice of the Mass (and these weekly reflections) faithfully, then we have a clear view of who God honestly is and who we are in relationship to this. God is our Creator and we are his creatures. He has no obligation to share his nature with us yet he freely chooses to share His Son with us! Like the centurion who shared his faith in Jesus before his daughter was healed (cf. Matthew 8:8) we too demonstrate our faith by our approach and plead our unworthiness if we ask him to heal us, Jesus says the word and it is done Our souls are healed! (The Mass, 191) After the priest, deacon, and ministers receive Holy Communion the people then come forward in an orderly manner to receive our Lord. Sometimes we forget the basic decorum and principles stated by the Church in this area, so allow me to offer some considerations: If you are in a state of grave (mortal) sin, which includes but is not limited to sins against the 1 st, 5 th, 6 th, or 9 th Commandments, then you are NOT to receive Holy Communion without availing yourself of the Sacrament of Reconciliation prior to reception of Holy Communion you may come forward for a blessing, but at the first opportunity should avail yourself to the priest to receive absolution. When coming forward to receive Holy Communion, the two approved methods are: On the tongue (by properly opening your mouth AFTER saying Amen first) By placing the right hand UNDER the left hand and raising them above the waist (so that the host can be placed properly) AFTER saying Amen first, then receiving the host and picking it up with your RIGHT hand. NOTE: The proper response to receiving Our Lord in Holy Communion is Amen. Thank you, Thank you Father, or no response at all is NOT a proper response. The Church requires us to say Amen after viewing the Host because this is the culmination of our belief in what we have just participated in within the sacrifice of the Mass. Jesus fulfills our needs and desires with his Body & Blood and we recite one word - Amen (I believe) to fulfill our commitment and our belief in that amazing gift. Some other considerations: If you are receiving on the hand, please (during the winter season) remove gloves/mittens or the finger holes of hoodies or sweatshirts to receive properly. Also be mindful of making sure your hands are clean when coming up to receive if you re unable or are unsure, receive on the tongue. Children may come up (And are encouraged) with their parents/guardians to receive a blessing. Please have them with you (preferably in front of you) and after you have received the priest or deacon will gladly give your children a blessing. Be aware that sometimes children wander while coming up in line and can be a distraction to others this is why having them in front of you is the recommended position. The most important consideration I can make (and I cannot stress this enough) is after you have received - the MASS IS NOT OVER. Through time many have come under the notion that after receiving they can leave to beat the crowds and bolt faster than a fire drill before Mass has concluded DO NOT DO THIS. We are called to give thanks (which is why the very word Eucharist means thanksgiving ) for what we have just received. Keeling or sitting and doing this is essential NOT in the parking lot, in your car, or in the coffee shop but in Church in the pew or vestibule! After communion is distributed and the vessels are purified by the Priest or deacon is a perfect time for all who have received to spend time in reflection for what they have just received and to give thanks to God for this amazing gift. To bring to completion the entire prayer of God s people the priest then invites everyone to stand and he recites the Prayer after Communion. This prayer brings all of the thanksgiving of the people to one united prayer of praise in thanksgiving for the graces granted through the mystery that has just been celebrated. At every Mass, a single prayer after communion is said and ends with the simple conclusion Through Christ our Lord. The Mass then concludes with the Priest s greeting (The Lord be with you) and blessing which can be simple (during weekdays and memorials) or more solemn (during feasts, Sundays and solemnities) and the dismissal of the people to go forth and live what they have just celebrated (recited or sung either by the priest or the deacon). The priest (and deacon) then venerates the altar again with a kiss, and then with all of the ministers of the Mass either bow or genuflect to the Altar/Tabernacle and then process out of the Church (or back to the sacristy on weekdays). As the procession moves from the altar to the back of church a hymn or postlude (by the organist) may be played. The faithful are encouraged to remain and offer a prayer of thanksgiving after Mass (like the one found below) and then depart. Lord Jesus Christ, take all my freedom, my memory, my understanding, and my will. All that I have and cherish you have given me. I surrender it all to be guided by Your will. Your grace and Your love are enough for me. Give me these, Lord Jesus, and I ask for nothing more, Amen. Fr. JP
