3 August 19, 2018 Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Today we celebrate the 20 th Sunday in Ordinary Time. Today we hear once again from the masterful teacher. For a fifth week we hear Jesus tell the crowds that He is the Bread of Life, the Living Bread come down from Heaven, real food and real drink. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. The Eucharist is Wisdom s sumptuous feast that teaches us to forsake foolishness and advance in the way of understanding. This feast fills us with the Holy Spirit, who gives us understanding and new life. At each Mass we gather, sing hymns, psalms and spiritual songs and then taste and see the goodness of the Lord in the Body and Blood of Jesus becoming one with us. Our sharing in this mystery gives us the spiritual food for life s journey to the eternal banquet feast we ll share one day in Heaven. How can this man give us His flesh to eat? He can and does. We see this through eyes of faith and know He does this for one reason; Love! In a few weeks we will be returning to having our weekly Children s Liturgy of the Word during the 10:00am Mass. For several weeks we have been seeking one more generous parishioner who could offer their time and talent as a catechist/liturgist. Our current team could use one more volunteer who can help bring the message of the scriptures to our parish children. If God is calling you to this ministry, please contact Donna in the parish office ( ). She will put you in contact with one of our regular leaders for more instructions. I want to especially thank parishioners, who during the past several weeks, have joined in donating to the campaigns for School supplies and new/gently used shoes. As you saw in last week s bulletin, the generosity of SLE parishioners for students at Our Lady of Guadalupe was again a huge success. The box for the Shoeman project was also filled several times. Thank you for being generous stewards of God s gifts. Today at 2:00pm I am hosting a special Meet and Greet Informational Meeting for the pilgrimage I will be leading to the Holy Land in March. Our travel guide from the travel company will be here to answer questions and have brochures for anyone interested. Refreshments will be served. All are invited. Even if you re just interested to hear about the details of a visit to the Lands Where Jesus Walked, I want to encourage you to attend. We will meet in St. Joseph Hall. Beginning this month I joined online giving as my way to give each week to our parish. I was reluctant at first as I try to tithe each week. Donna helped me to see how easy it is to set this up and I have been pleasantly surprised how much easier it is than writing a check. If you haven t signed-up for online giving, I just want to let you know I am doing it; it s easy, I highly recommend it! Our final Mass on the Grass for this season, weather permitting, will be on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 3 rd at 9:00am. Hope to see you there as we unofficially end summer and begin our round of regular meetings and programs. Finally today, did you know that St. Luke s has a weekly meeting for anyone suffering from alcoholism and is interested in maintaining the path of sobriety. Movin On Group 1065 meets every Saturday at 6:00pm in St. Joseph Hall. If you have family members, friends, or neighbors who are looking for a local meeting, please contact Rhonda for more information: God Bless! Have a good week! Remember those 3 Hail Marys (Fr. Pete) ** IMPORTANT NOTE** RE: MASS - MONDAY, AUGUST 27, 2018 There is NO MASS on Monday, August 8:00am! The Chapel will be open for prayer!.. 3

Please remember St. Luke in your estate planning. Dynamic Catholic, Alive! Giving Thanks Always and for Everything The Gospel today is critical for our lives as Catholics, as it illuminates the truth of the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. Read John 6 again and again! However, since I touched on the first part of this passage last week, I want to focus on St. Paul s letter to the Ephesians today. In this letter, he provides us with a hallmark of the Christian life: rejoicing and giving thanks in all circumstances. We find ourselves in all types of situations during our earthly life. These include sick times and healthy times, sad times and cheerful times, times of defeat and times of victory. The crux of the matter is that we must always give thanks to God for whatever He sends our way. The apostles and early Christian martyrs rejoiced that they were found worthy to suffer for the sake of Jesus Christ. They glorified Him in life and death. Similarly, we are called to be a people who do not despair or embrace a cynical perspective on life in the midst of trials. In our workplaces, our families, our neighborhoods, and all our endeavors, we are called to manifest the goodness of God and the truth that He uses us to accomplish His will in all things. Jesus, thank you for EVERYTHING. archstl.org/dynamic LITURGICAL MINISTRIES ~ August 25 & 26, 2018 August 25 5:00 p.m. August 26 10:00 a.m. THIS EUCHARISTIC FEAST Some things about human nature don t change, even over the course of centuries. When we celebrate a holiday, we have a meal; when we celebrate a significant event, we have a feast. In today s first reading, Lady Wisdom is setting a feast, a sign of celebrating the covenant that Israel has with God. Israel s central remembrance of its saving Exodus covenant is the Passover meal. So it is natural and not coincidental that the Christian celebration of the new covenant sealed by the blood of Christ on the cross happens at a meal, our Eucharist, offered first by Jesus in the context of Passover remembrance. It is easy for us, sometimes, to forget the very long and rich religious and human origins of our eucharistic feasting on the bread and cup that are the Body and Blood of Jesus. Today, and for the next few Sundays that we hear the Bread of Life discourse from John, let us bring to mind the loving covenant that God makes with us, and be filled with great joy at this marvelous feast that we have come to attend! It is a group of caring people acting on the belief that every person is a child of God from the first moment of their existence and that they deserve to have the respect and dignity due them. It is also a place, a place in Calvary Cemetery where, thanks to the generosity of Msgr. Robert McCarthy and Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, abandoned children are laid to rest. That s the reason for the Garden of Innocents. Living out her Catholic faith, St. Peter-St. Charles parishioner Rebeca McKelvey filled a previously unmet need. She learned that when babies who have died are abandoned by their families, they were buried without the dignity and respect every person deserves. Without any rudiments, even clothing, they were buried in unmarked graves. She brought together like minded folks to provide what was needed to honor these innocent souls and express the love of God they enjoy together with all his creation. Today, although the Garden of Innocents has provided over 40 burials for these special children of God it remains a little known ministry in our midst. Realizing that there are many folks in our parishes who would be eager and willing to support this ministry the Garden is reaching out with this information. There are many ways you can be a part of this ministry. First by supporting it with prayer. You can also get on the Garden s list to be notified when a funeral takes place and attend the funeral joining in honoring these children. If your skills include knitting or sewing, you can contribute by donating the items used to lay these children to rest. You can help by providing financial resources and there are even more ways to support the Garden as well. For more details and contact information check out the Garden s website: or on Facebook... 8
