3 March 10, 2019 First Sunday of Lent FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Today we celebrate the First Sunday of Lent, within our annual journey to the cross and to the empty tomb. These next 40 days are an annual opportunity to relive the Paschal Mystery of Jesus Passion, Death, and Resurrection with mind and heart renewed. The ashes are barely gone from our foreheads as we heard the challenge, Repent and believe the Gospel. Repentance is turning away from anything that isn t of God, and embracing once again our true identity as beloved sons and daughters, who in our weakness have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. The readings of Lent are designed to remind, encourage, and challenge believers so that we might be prepared to renew our dedication to our baptismal covenant at Easter. To that end, we are reminded of God s providence and care and St. Paul s invitation to us to become ambassadors for Christ. The first Sunday of Lent begins our reflection as we journey with Jesus into the desert and hear the story of the Temptations by the devil. Aren t we all tempted throughout the year to deny our Christian identity? Don t we oftentimes give in to the lies of the Father of Lies and for brief periods try his way, which folks, is ALWAYS NOT God s way? This Lent let s all Repent and find the grace of conversion our merciful God is offering. After reviewing the responses to our recent Parish Survey, the Parish Pastoral Council determined three priorities that we will be focusing on in this year, (and perhaps beyond). They are, in order of priority: 1. Community Building. We discussed ways this coming year to build up our parish community, such as restoring the celebration of Fr. McMahon s Birthday, a tradition that goes way back and combining it with a celebration of our patron, St. Luke. In addition to our holiday Mass on the Grass, Fr. McMahon s Birthday will likely be a Parish Picnic Day. Under this priority we also determined to form a Welcoming Committee to reach out and celebrate new members. How can you get involved? Volunteer for the welcoming Committee. 2. Evangelization. As in all parishes, St. Luke s needs to engage in spreading the Good News that Jesus is alive here in our Parish. With many ideas on how to do this, once again we are thinking an Evangelization Committee is necessary to formulate strategies and promote opportunities for all parishioners to invite people to Church, be involved in a neighborhood campaign. 3. Stewardship. This is where we get EVERYONE involved and taking ownership for the parish by sharing their gifts in some way. Again, we will be forming a Stewardship Committee to develop concrete steps our parish can take to ensure every member understands stewardship and sees the possibilities to be more engaged in parish life. Wow! Many good suggestions and ideas came from the surveys and helped us determine these priorities. Once again thank you to everyone who took the time to respond and made great observations for improvement. I hope you saw, in the bulletin, that Msgr. Morris, who is an amazing speaker, will be offering Lenten Days of Recollection for both Men and Women. All parishioners are invited and encouraged to attend. The Women s Day will be on Saturday, March 16 th and will focus on the Wideness of God s Mercy. The Men s Day will be the following Saturday, March 23 rd and will focus on St. Joseph as Mentor and Guide. Both days will be from 8:00am-2:15pm and costs $25. which includes a continental breakfast and full lunch. Reservations are required. The Women s Day registration is due by March 10 th, and the Men s Day registration is due by March 17 th. I hope all parishioners take advantage of this opportunity to spend a day in reflection and prayer this Lent. Finally today, a reminder that we will be having Stations of the Cross after the 8:00am Mass each Friday during Lent. 5 March 10, 2019 LENTEN FOOD DRIVE As part of our parish almsgiving we are inviting parishioners to bring canned goods and food each Sunday for our St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry. Please put canned goods and food offerings in front of the communion rail and we will stack these under the cross in the sanctuary. As the weeks of Lent progress our alms for the poor will grow taller under the cross and be a sign of our compassion. LITURGICAL MINISTRIES ~ March 16 & 17, 2019 Sheri & John Cronin, Dee & Ron Brockman John Cronin, Paul Eigelberger, Mike McBride & Dan O Sullivan ALMSGIVING, PRAYER, FASTING, and TEMPTATION As we begin our season of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving, the reading from Deuteronomy reminds us of our duty of almsgiving, that we set [our offerings] before the Lord, [our] God, [and] shall bow down in [God s] presence (Deuteronomy 26:10). The reading from Romans refers us to our prayer, reminding us that The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart... For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved (Romans 10:8, 13). These are comforting words, and encourage us to ask God for what we need and to aid us in our prayer. Finally, the Gospel of Luke shows us a fasting Jesus, who was tempted as we are, and who knows what it means to be human. Someone once said that temptation arises when you re tired and weary, and the devil comes along and makes a perfectly reasonable suggestion. Jesus shows us that, with his help, we too can overcome our temptations, reasonable as they may sound. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. First, do you give to God from your first fruits, the best that you have to offer, or do you give from what is leftover? Second, do you recognize that everything you have has been given to you by God? Ask God for a grateful and generous heart, every day, in all circumstances.
