3 December 30, 2018 The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. This Sunday in the Octave of Christmas gives us another opportunity to reflect on the family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, and in a special way, to reflect on the families we have probably gathered with these past few days; people from out of town or perhaps where we went to visit for this family holiday. We oftentimes think of Church, or perhaps religion classes as the places we learn about faith. But none of these is more central to learning to live our faith than the household and family. In today s Catholic education we emphasize that parents are the first educators of their children in the ways of faith. When children see parents living their faith, insisting on Gospel values as the way to relate to one another, attending Mass, saying grace before meals, and taking time to pray as a family, we see how families are in a sense a microcosm of the Church. Today s readings affirm this reality. Our families teach us so much, for good or for ill. Today let us thank God for the good things. Let us ask for courage to bring healing to the bad. Let us grow in wisdom from those who show us the face of God, the love of Jesus, the faithfulness of Hannah, and the trust of Mary, even in the face of anxiety. No matter what, believe in the Name of Jesus Christ and love one another. Today is our Open House at the Rectory. I am hoping to make this an annual tradition so you always feel welcome at our home, which Msgr. Morris and I are grateful that you provide for us. As a Parish Family, the rectory is certainly a place not only for business and appointments but a place you feel welcome to stop by. An Open House gives you the opportunity to see that your priests are pretty normal, down to earth, and are grateful to be a part of this beautiful parish. The Open House will be from 12:30pm to 2:30pm. I want to take the opportunity to express my sincere and heartfelt gratitude to all who made this Christmas such a special celebration of the Lord s Nativity; First, the ushers, greeters, lectors, servers, communion ministers for their time and talent; Next, our Organist, Frank Jorns and our new Parish Festival Choir for the many hours on Sunday nights rehearing and for the beautiful music that brought such joy to the Mass; to all who helped decorate our beautiful Church and transformed it into a place fit for our King; to all who donated to our Memorial Poinsettia Fund in memory of loved ones. Every aspect of this year s celebration took us working together and sharing our gifts. Thank you so very much. This Tuesday is January 1 st, the Feast of Mary, the Mother of God, another Holy Day of Opportunity. Masses at St. Luke s will be on New Year s Eve, Dec. 31 at 4pm and on New Year s Day at 9:00am. Please make every effort to make Mass on the Holy Day, to ask our Blessed Mother to intercede for us her sons and daughters, and to begin 2019 with deep hope in the promises it brings. Finally today, as we continue the Christmas season, let me close with an often unsung verse of the Carol, O Little Town of Bethlehem: Where children pure and holy pray to the Blessed Child, Where misery cries out to Thee, Son of the Mother mild; Where charity stands watching and faith holds wide the door, The dark night wakes, the glory breaks, and Christmas comes once more. God Bless! Happy Christmastide! Remember those 3 Hail Marys (Fr. Pete).. 3

HOME IS WHERE THE FAMILY IS The idea, dream, and reality of family is so strong and durable that we use it to describe all that is best about human gatherings. We speak of the family of nations, of our church and parish families. The greatest compliment we can pay a friend or gracious host is to say that we feel at home with them, we feel part of the family. Families are the first crucibles in which love is tested and tempered. Jesus himself was one of three people who lived in the shadow of each other. This family, like our own, did not always get it right, but they always tried to. These three amateurs were on holiday, and one of them got lost. Two were worried sick and took great measures to find the third, a boy after all, who was seeking the meaning of his calling. He found his vocation to do his Father s work but he also returned home with his parents. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
