3 February 24, 2019 Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Today we celebrate the 7 th Sunday in Ordinary Time. Today s readings present a reversals of the way people normally respond in this old world of ours. In our first reading from 1 Samuel, King David is presented with the opportunity for vengeance against Saul who has turned against David. But David chooses to spare him out of respect for God s anointed. In our Gospel reading from St. Luke Jesus sets before His disciples the mandate that explains what love your enemies looks like. Jesus advocates not passive acceptance, but active desistance. If struck, don t strike back. If your cloak is taken, offer your inner garment. (effectively rendering you naked.) When you refuse to escalate the violence, you are, in essence, doing good to those who hate you. The motivation for that type of behavior is trust in God s reciprocity: For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you. Jesus offers practical and difficult advice about how to follow the Golden Rule, Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Saints and holy men and women who lived it learned its power. They show us that love begets love and giving of ourselves opens us up to receive God s forgiving love. Human logic calls this crazy! Spiritual logic finds sense in this way. So try it. Make judgments based on Jesus teaching, without becoming judgmental and Do unto others as God does unto you. I would like to highlight this weekend a special ministry we are privileged to offer our parish during the 10:00am liturgy. Last summer we asked for volunteers to help us with our Children s Liturgy of the Word. Thank you to all who have become new catechists and to those who have generously served our young parishioners. Each week after the opening prayer I invite our children to come forward and then bless them as they proceed to St. Joseph s Hall for a special children s version of the Sunday scriptures. All children are invited, and parents are always welcome to accompany their little ones. Two adults usually accompany the children and provide creative ways to understand what the adults are hearing in Church. I feel blessed that we have this special ministry here at St. Luke s. If you have little ones, and those up to 4 th Grade, I encourage you to send them to our Children s Liturgy. If they are shy, or reluctant, please join them one Sunday and see for yourself what a gift this ministry truly is. Let the children come unto me for such is the Kingdom of God. It s time once again to begin preparing for Holy Week and Easter. Lent begins March 6 th. We are once again calling on parishioners to consider joining our Festival Choir. We will once again rehearse on Sunday evenings from 7-9pm for the liturgies of Holy Week and Easter. Our first season this past Christmas saw a good sampling of parishioners, young and not so young enjoying the opportunity to share their time and talent to enhance our Christmas Mass. Join us for awesome and uplifting music. First rehearsal is this Sunday, Feb. 24 th. Hope to see you up in the choir loft. Finally today an update about the surveys that so many of you took the time to fill out and share with me and the Parish Pastoral Council. They have now been collated and the Council will meet this Tuesday to use your responses for planning our priorities and action steps for the coming year. The response was very good and I want to thank you for your input. The Council is your voice for all things that effect our life here at St. Luke s and is always looking to hear from our brothers and sisters; praise when things go well and you feel we are living our mission, and challenges when you believe we can be doing better. We, of course, know that Jesus is the Messiah, the anointed one of God, but the Bible uses this term for many different people. It is scripture s way of indicating who has been chosen by God for a special place and mission in salvation history. The point of Jesus teaching is not to encourage these kinds of behaviors in others, but rather to form us in the image of our heavenly Father by increasing our opportunities to love unconditionally, expecting no return; to be merciful and forgiving, even when it would be easier not to. But, if we are to imitate Christ, most of us need to practice mercy and compassion more frequently. Start with the little daily annoyances that we experience, the unkind word or hateful glance we receive. Instead of plotting revenge on that person, try saying a quick prayer for that person. Mercy and compassion will put us on the path to holiness.
