3 December 23, 2018 Fourth Sunday of Advent FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Today we celebrate the Fourth and last Sunday of Advent. Let ev ry heart prepare Him room. This is a message for us not only in these final hours of Advent before Christmas, but for every day. The prophet Micah prophecies that Bethlehem will be the place from which will come a ruler for Israel. (And ultimately for the whole world.) He ends by saying, He shall be peace. In our Gospel today, St. Luke gives us the account of the Visitation of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth. The two serve as proto-disciples, for both hear the word of God and act upon it. At the Annunciation, the angel Gabriel had cited Elizabeth s unexpected pregnancy as testimony that, nothing will be impossible for God. As Mary greets Elizabeth, the infant in her womb, (John the Baptist), leaps for joy, and Elizabeth is filled with the Holy Spirit. She gives a blessing to Mary that will come to refer to all believers, Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled. Let all of us prepare room for the Christ to be reborn in us with joy! Thank you to all who came out to decorate the Church for Christmas. Even though we are celebrating the final Sunday of Advent, we have a foretaste of the great celebration of our Lord s Nativity in 48 hours. The Church looks beautiful! You ve heard it said that it takes a village. It takes a community of disciples offering time and talent and, between St. Luke s and the Oratory, we are seeing stewardship in action. Thanks to everyone. Please note the Mass Schedule for Christmas. We will continue last year s schedule with Christmas Eve Mass at 4:00pm, preceded by a concert of Carols and Christmas music by our newly formed Festival Choir beginning at 3:15pm. Please come early and enjoy the opportunity to hear and join in your favorite carols. Mass on Christmas Day will be at 9:00am. Please invite family and friends to join us for our Christmas Masses. Take the opportunity to invite them to discover and rediscover the welcome home many are seeking this season. Please note that the Parish Office will be closed this week starting at noon on Monday, Dec. 24 th through Wednesday, Dec. 26 th to give staff a holiday. There will also be no 8:00am Mass, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. I will be away for a few days. Many years ago I found the following prayer written by Dr. Peter Marshall, who was chaplain to the United States Senate: We yearn, O father, for the simple beauty of Christmas for all the Old familiar melodies and words which remind us of that great miracle When He, who made all things, was one night to come as a Babe, to lie In the crook of a woman s arm. Before such mystery we kneel, as we Follow the Shepherds and Wise Men to bring Thee the gift of our love A love, we confess, that has not always been as warm, or sincere, or real As it could have been. But now on this Christmas morning, that love Would find its Beloved, and from Thee receive the grace to make pure Again, warm, and real. We Thee our gratitude for every token of Thy Love. Amen. Throughout our lives, we retain the language and habits of our native region and family of origin. Should we return to our home after a long absence, we quickly revert to its familiar speech and practices. Our deep memory is reflected in old stories and words and speech patterns. This familiarity runs like an underground river and accompanies us wherever we go. Not only do we remember, we are incorporated into and made part of a greater memory. In remembering and recollecting, we are in turn gathered up and re-collected. Today we remember Mary, a small figure travelling the country roads to visit Elizabeth. All the great pronouncements and dreams of the prophets point to this time when the Lord s words to Mary would be gathered and fulfilled.
