3 December 16, 2018 Third Sunday of Advent FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Today we celebrate the Third Sunday of Advent. In former days today was known as Gaudete Sunday, or Rejoicing Sunday. We light the third candle on our Advent wreath which for today is Rose. The purple of Advent and the white of Christmas mingle to give us this special candle. The entrance antiphon for today is from St. Paul s Letter to the Philippians, Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice./ Indeed, the Lord is near. The collect for today s Mass repeats the theme of joy, enable us, we pray, to attain the joys of so great a salvation with solemn worship and glad rejoicing. In our first reading from the prophet Zephaniah we even hear that God, who is in our midst, will rejoice over us with gladness. We then read the full text of St. Paul s Letter to the Philippians hearing once again the call to rejoice in the Lord always. Our Gospel this week focuses on St. John the Baptist who is preparing people for the coming of, the One who is mightier than I. I am not worthy to untie the thongs of His sandals. Exhorting them in many other ways, he preached Good News to the people. This weekend let us rejoice, and allow the Christ who was born for us to be reborn in us this Advent. Church decorating for Christmas will be this coming Saturday Dec. 22 nd, beginning at 10am. There is much to do to get the Church ready for Christmas; trees to put up, flowers to be arranged in the sanctuary, the Manger to be constructed and finishing touches to our already beautiful Church. Please join us for Church decorating this Saturday. It will help put you in the Christmas spirit. (Because we still have the final Sunday of Advent to celebrate on the 23 rd, we will not light the trees or have the infant in the manger until Christmas Eve.) This weekend we have one of the traditions of our parish as our wonderful ladies of the Women s Guild host their annual Christmas Bake sale. In addition to delicious cookies, there will be a plethora of delectable goodies to choose from. I encourage us all to support our Women s Guild this weekend. I hope you saw the cute true story of the sign posted in a Church in France about the use of cell phones in Church. During worship, in order to give God the full attention He desires, and not to distract from our full, active, conscious participation in the Sacred Liturgy, let s make every effort to remember to turn-off our phones on entering Church or put cell phones on vibrate, and make St. Luke s a NO Phone zone. Please note the Mass Schedule for Christmas. We will continue last year s schedule with Christmas Eve Mass at 4:00pm, preceded by a concert of Carols and Christmas music by our newly formed Festival Choir beginning at 3:15pm. Mass on Christmas Day will be at 9:00am. Please invite family and friends to join us for our Christmas Masses. Someone recently asked me about the upcoming Lenten Pilgrimage to the Holy Land in March Currently we have 18 pilgrims signed-up. That s a good number, but there is still room for more. If you, or someone you know might be interested in joining me and other parishioners from St. Luke, Immaculate Conception, and beyond, please contact me. The ten days walking where Jesus walked and experiencing the Holy places of the Holy Land will be an incredible way to experience Holy Week this year. Someone once said that the Holy Land is the Fifth Gospel, where people experience the Good News and have a special encounter with the Risen Lord. Finally today, in the final days of Advent when there s so many things pressing upon us for the holidays, keep your eyes on the true meaning of the season. Notice the lights as you travel, let them remind you of Jesus, the Light of the World. If you re doing a bit of holiday baking, think of the neighbor next door and share the joy. As you wrap presents, think of the faces of those who will be opening them and the joy you share by your gifts. Remember Christ-mas begins with Christ. God Bless! Happy Advent! They will be raffling off a gift card basket and St. Louis Cardinals basket. The gift card basket is valued at a minimum of $ and there is a lot of valuable cardinal memorabilia in the Cardinals basket. Drawing will take place on December 19. They will call the lucky winners! Online giving is available on our website. Please remember St. Luke in your estate planning. Today has traditionally been called Gaudete Sunday. The Latin tag is derived from Paul s appeal in the second reading to rejoice always in the Lord, and the Latin Mass text based on that reading. The irony and paradox of this Christian joy is underlined by the fact that Paul wrote those words in prison. But from there he could see the progress of God s work. Is it obvious to us? We feel that this is not the time for joy when there is so much suffering and moral evil. It is interesting, then, that the first reading is from the prophet Zephaniah, who is almost exclusively concerned with gloomy visions of Judgment Day. Today the Church selects the only optimistic text in Zephaniah, in which the prophet has been touched by the spirit of joy. This, we are assured on all sides, is the season of joy.
