3 January 20, 2019 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Today we celebrate the 2 nd Sunday in Ordinary Time. So, when was the 1 st Sunday? Good question. The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, while ending the Christmas season, is also considered the 1 st Sunday of Ordinary Time. (Oh those liturgists!) Today we begin our annual course that I like to term, Discipleship 101. For the next several weeks we will journey with the Lord learning about the meaning of our call, witnessing His miracles, and listening to His message, not just for people 2000 years ago, but also for each of us. From now until the beginning of Lent (March 6 th ) I encourage you to open your heart to what the Lord may be wanting to teach you. Today we have another epiphany of Jesus as He changes water into wine at the wedding feast in Cana. His first miracle is a manifestation of His identity. In St. John s Gospel, miracles are referred to as signs. Jesus demonstrates His identity through the signs He performs. We re told, And His disciples began to believe in Him. It s often true in each of our lives that we can search and search for the spectacular and extraordinary miracles that will probably elude most of us. Better to simply be aware of the little ordinary miracles that happen every day; a friendship begun, a surprise phone call or visit, a reconciliation we have been praying for these are all ways God brings us a miracle of what we need. Watch for them with gratitude. Last weekend s winter blitz was definitely the largest storm we ve seen in quite some time. (Not like the 1982 storm with thunder snow). Around the campus it looked like about with a wet, heavy, slush underneath. We pretreated the walkways, our snow removal company came and plowed, Amir and I shoveled and he ran the snow blower. Despite our best efforts it continued to snow, sleet, rain, and freeze making it a slippery mess. Thank you for using caution. While the crowd was down a bit, I was happy that many still made an effort to celebrate the Baptism of the Lord. There are salt containers by the doors of Church. If there are slick spots that need attention, please feel free to scatter some in those spots. Due to a round of viral infections that went around the rectory, we weren t able to get the promised surveys printed and ready to distribute at Mass last weekend. (It may have been providential, given the weather.) They are ready and this weekend we will take a few moments during Mass to elicit your thoughts and comments. It is also posted online if you prefer to fill it out electronically at your leisure. Please fill it out and help the Parish Council determine our top priorities for Speaking of viral infections and the Flu Season; after consideration and prayer, I made a pastoral decision to stop distributing the Precious Blood at weekday masses after the Feast of the Epiphany. It wasn t a decision I take lightly, since I believe the option of receiving Holy Communion under both species more closely resembles the way Jesus intended His gift to be celebrated. However, during this time of year, when many of us struggle with colds, I believe it is a safety measure we can agree helps us from contracting these nasty germs. We will now be implementing this at ALL Masses beginning this weekend and continuing until the Spring. Our Theology of the Eucharist reminds us that both the Body and Blood are contained in the Sacred Host that we receive at Mass. Someone also asked about the Sign of Peace and said she didn t feel comfortable exchanging a handshake during this flu season. Again, our hands are probably the germiest places we can transmit diseases. I leave it up to your discretion but ask that you be polite when someone refrains from shaking your hand at the Sign of Peace. A smile, or a nod, with an expression of peace, is also a way of exchanging this important part of the Mass. Another custom that has brought a few questions is the reason we have begun to say the Prayer to St. Michael at the end of Mass. Over a year ago I was approached by a parishioner who said she had visited a parish (here in St. Louis), where this was being done. She wanted to know if we were supposed to be doing this. It has not been promulgated for all parishes but has been left up to the individual parish community to determine. With the current problems in our world, and in our universal Church, I think praying to the powerful Archangel Michael is a good idea. It s not a return to the old days when we were praying to defeat communism, but a real recognition of the love God has for us in giving us this Holy Protector. God Bless! Have a great week! Remember those 3 Hail Marys (Fr. Pete) Second Sunday in Ordinary Time.. 3

LITURGICAL MINISTRIES ~ January 26 & 27, 2019 Pat Mullally, Kris Osmack, Julie Schulte & Charlene Talir John Cronin, Paul Eigelberger, Mike McBride & Dan O Sullivan A VISIBLE GOD We find it difficult to convey ideas to people unless we can actually show them something, demonstrate what we mean. God, who is invisible and truly beyond human understanding, apparently faces the same difficulty. People want to see, not just listen to an idea. So God gave us Jesus Christ, God made visible in the world. During these past weeks we have seen how Jesus was revealed as an infant to the shepherds and the magi, and then began his adult public life at his baptism by John. Today s Gospel reading tells us of his first sign, providing wine for the wedding guests at Cana. Of course, even Jesus, God made visible, was not always easily understood in his own day, nor is he even now. So we have to ponder what we see: the poverty and simplicity of his birth, his humility and openness before John the Baptist, his kindness and compassion toward people in their ordinary problems, such as running short of wine at a wedding. Yet it is in coming to know Jesus that we come to know God. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. iblessed and gratefuli To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. ~ 1 Corinthians 12:7 St. Paul tells us that God has blessed each of us for a reason. How has God blessed you? Are you using your gifts according to God s plan? How are you helping to build God s kingdom here on earth? Remember that if you don t do the work God planned for you, no one else can do it. Live the life God has intended for you, feel His love, peace, and joy!
