Two smaller meals may also be taken for good health but together they should not equal a full meal. St. Juan Diego Catholic Church is seeking a full-time Director of Religious Education and Youth Ministry We are sad that we will be losing Claire at the end of this school year, but we are excited that she is getting married in July and moving to Colorado. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to: planning and implementation of religious education for pre-k through 12; sacramental prep for First Eucharist, Reconciliation, Confirmation and RCIA for Children; Children s Liturgy of the Word; Middle and High School Youth Groups; Vacation Bible School; recruiting and coordinating volunteers for the programs. Applicant must be a practicing Catholic in good standing with the church. Degree in Theology or Pastoral Ministry and experience with parish child and youth programs is preferred. Social Justice On Saturday, March 16, St. Juan Diego parishioners can again work on houses at a Habitat for Humanity work site. No experience is necessary and all tasks will be suitable to your comfort level. Get to know other St. Juan Diego parishioners and maybe even a few families who will be living in the homes you will be building. Twelve volunteers, 16 and over, are welcome on the work site in Beaverton. 4 Semanas de Misericordia: Alimentar a los Hambrientos Sagrada Escritura "Porque tuve hambre y me disté de comer,..." Mateo 25:36 Reflexión Alimentar al hambriento es la primera obra corporal de misericordia. Jesús lo proclamó cuando habló a sus discípulos sobre el Juicio de las Naciones (Mt 25: 31-46). Uno no necesita mirar demasiado lejos para encontrar evidencia de los hambrientos. Son los invitados de nuestra despensa de alimentos SVdP y Faith Cafe', mendigos en las esquinas, familias sin hogar, niños desfavorecidos que asisten a nuestras escuelas,... y la lista continúa. Y gracias a los medios de comunicación modernos, tenemos amplia evidencia de las condiciones de todos los hijos de Dios en toda la tierra. Hambre causada por la guerra, la escases de comida y la enfermedad. Tenemos la oportunidad de actuar en muchos niveles diferentes; de nuestra acción en nuestra propia comunidad a las acciones que insistimos de nuestros políticos. Cómo puede uno presumir de alimentar al alma si no puede primero realizar la tarea más simple de alimentar al cuerpo? Y cómo puede el cuerpo aprender sin la nutrición suficiente para alimentar su desarrollo? Mientras nos preparamos para la temporada de Cuaresma, reflexionemos sobre aquellos que tienen hambre entre nosotros y qué podemos hacer para remediar su necesidad. Qué está haciendo San Juan Diego para alimentar a los hambrientos? Despensa de Alimentos San Vicente de Paul: Feligreses donan comida y dinero en la colecta del segundo domingo. El año pasado, se proporcionaron 117,934 libras de alimentos a los necesitados, incluyendo almuerzos de fin de semana para 40 niños a través del programa de mochilas. 5 Weeks of Mercy: Feed the Hungry Scripture "For I was hungry and you gave me food,... " Matthew 25:36 Reflection To feed the hungry is the first corporal work of mercy. Jesus proclaimed it when he spoke to his disciples about the Judgment of the Nations (Mt 25:31-46). One need not look too far to find evidence of the hungry. They are the guests at our SVdP food pantry and Faith Cafe', beggars on street corners, homeless families, disadvantaged children attending our schools,... the list goes on. And thanks to modern media, we are given ample evidence of the conditions of all of God's children throughout the earth. Hunger caused by war, famine and disease. We have the opportunity to act at many different levels; from our action in our own community to the actions we insist of our politicians. The people of Israel were forged in the desert for 40 years; however, the Lord fed them with manna for their entire journey. How can one presume to feed the soul if one cannot first accomplish the simpler task of feeding the body? And how can the body learn without sufficient nutrition to fuel its development? As we prepare for the Lenten season, let us reflect on those who are hungry in our midst and what we can to do in redressing their need. What is St. Juan Diego doing to feed the hungry? St Vincent DePaul Food Pantry: Parishioners donate food and money at the Second Sunday collection. Last year 117,934 pounds of food was shared with those in need, including weekend lunches to 40 children through the backpack program. Volunteers gave over 1800 hours of their time to help at the pantry. Faith Café: Parish volunteers help cook and serve meals at Faith Café, an interdenominational program. Faith Cafe aims to feed the body and also the soul. The first time a guest comes it's to eat. They return week after week because of the compassion, respect, and friendliness they receive. It might be the only place all week someone has said something nice to them or listened to them. When they leave they go with a full stomach, and knowing that someone cares about them. St. Andre Bessette's Hospitality: Our Parish volunteers help to provide food and services to the downtown homeless population. St. Juan Diego also provides a donation for hot chocolate. While a cup of hot chocolate may seem like something small to us, it is a luxury to the people that St. Andres' serves. Some guests enjoy mixing cocoa in their coffee to make a mocha, a special treat! 40 Cans for Lent: The annual Knights of Columbus food drive to support our SVdP food pantry. Offering of Letters: Each year in conjunction with the Archdiocese Office of Life, Justice & Peace, Bread for the World chooses a specific legislation or a legislative emphasis that can make a real difference to people struggling with hunger and poverty and parishioners are invited to write letters to their Senators and Representatives. St. Nicholas - Early champion of ending hunger St. Nicholas lived from 270 to 343. While you might know him best as Santa Claus there are also legends around him working to feed the hungry. One legend is about a famine in Myra, his home town. A ship was in the port loaded with wheat for the emperor in Constantinople. Nicholas asked for some of the wheat for people who were hungry. At first, the sailors refused, but Nicholas promised that they would not get in trouble for sharing. When the ship arrived at its destination, the sailors discovered that the weight of the load had not changed, despite some wheat having been removed. Miraculously the small amount of wheat supplied the town for two full years until the famine ended. Write your politician to insist on diplomatic and other actions to mitigate hunger and famine in our world. When so much of our food goes to waste, consider good stewardship practices of your own food habits.
