Adriel Algiene recently escaped the unyielding heat of Las Vegas and arrived in Portland, OR in August of He has been playing piano from the age of 10, working in Liturgical music from the age of 15, and earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Classical Piano Performance from Adams State College in Alamosa, CO. While living in Nevada, he became the Assistant Music Director of St. Francis of Assisi Parish. Mr. Algiene is also a Private Piano teacher and vocal coach who has worked with a number of ensembles, choirs, and conductors. His hobbies include walking his dog, reading books, geeking out over Doctor Who, Star Wars, and The Avengers, and listening to many, many different types of music. He is very grateful for the opportunity to join St. Juan Diego Parish. January 31, 2016 Enero 31, 2016 Scout Sunday This upcoming Sunday February 7th we will have Scout Sunday at St. Juan Diego, so we welcome all scouts to wear their uniforms to mass! Congratulations Evie Bustamante! on receiving the Scouting Award! Archbishop s Catholic Appeal 2016 Next weekend, is Commitment Weekend for the 2016 Archbishop s Catholic Appeal. During Mass we will watch a video from Archbishop Sample about the Appeal. If you received a personalized commitment card in the mail please bring it to Mass with you as we join together to support our Catholic Church in western Oregon. If you did not receive a commitment card in the mail pledge envelopes will be available during Mass. This next week, please read the Archbishop s Catholic Appeal materials you received in the Parish Bulletin today and prayerfully reflect on the level of commitment you will make next weekend. The Archbishop s Catholic Appeal provides substantial financial support to essential ministries that support parishes in our Catholic Church in western Oregon. These programs provide education and faith formation at all levels and provides a Catholic presence for tens of thousands of people. When we stop to count our abundant blessings, we are aware of how truly blessed we are. The Archbishop s Catholic Appeal is an invitation to share your blessings and support for the Gospel mission here in Western Oregon. Your pledge is also a sign of your gratitude for God s generous abundance. While we can never out-do God in generosity, we are called to join in the mission of the Gospel as we put forth the gifts of life, goodness, and grace through the sharing of our own blessings from God. 3 Save The Date! St. Edward parish is proud to be hosting a free spiritual music concert by internationally known Catholic recording artist Donna Cori Gibson. Her voice is outstanding and her music inspire. Her concert at St. Edward will be The Way of the Cross, a Song for Each Station, a concert and video experience. Be transported directly to the heart of Jesus with a voice and performance that will blow you away! Begin your Lenten journey on Sunday, February 14,2016, at 5:00 pm at St. Edward Church in North Plains. St. Juan Diego Knights of Columbus and St. Vincent de Paul 40 Cans For Lent Hunger knows no season, and food insecurity is a real problem right here in our own community. As such, our St. Vincent de Paul food pantry has become a critical and dependable resource for many families in need. Our "second Sunday food collections" currently bring in about 300 pounds of food per month which accounts for about 3% of the food distributed from our pantry. During most months SVdP assists approximately families who receive approximately 10,000-12,000 pounds of food each month. During the school year they also help about 45 kids from McKinley and Springville elementary schools with weekend food through the "backpack program". As you can see, 10,000+ pounds of food each month represents an enormous need, and an amazing commitment from our St. Vincent de Paul ministry. The Knights of Columbus would like to invite you again to join us in supporting the SVdP pantry by participating again in the 40 Cans for Lent food drive. The goal is simple: to have each parish household that is able to contribute one non-perishable food item for each of the forty days of Lent. Our goal is to raise at least 3,000 pounds of food, keeping the SVdP food shelves stocked and ready to assist those in need. Financial donations can be made to SVdP. Each $ donated will be considered one pound toward the goal. Please indicate "40 cans" on your donations. Here is how it works: Bring 40 non-perishable food items throughout Lent Watch the bulletin for a list of most needed items Place items in the Food Drive barrel in the Narthex The Knights and SVdP will take care of the rest, and report on our progress We will begin collecting food this coming week on Ash Wednesday, Feb 10th. St. Juan Diego Women s Retreat Feb. 19 th - 21 st at Our Lady of Peace Retreat House St. Juan Diego women s retreats are all about relationships. Connection. Belonging. Face to face sharing of faith and doubts; laughter and tears; love and support. Pope Francis emphasizes the importance of relationship in Laudato Si. The theme this year is Inspiring Women Past and Present. The content will be based on the book My Badass Book of Saints by Maria Morera Johnson. The books are available to purchase with your registration or for purchase even if you can t join us at the retreat. The book is not required reading, but is available if you d like to enhance your experience. We ve got them for sale at $ It s also available on Amazon and at local bookstores for $ We are going to have even more FUN than we had last year! We re planning Zumba, crafts, singing, games and our own Fr. Jeff Ervin will say Mass. The cost is $175 for the weekend. We have some scholarships available. And, we accept donations. 6 January 2016 Dear St. Juan Diego Staff and Parishioners, The Board members of Faith Cafe wish to thank you all for your support during the past 10th Anniversary year. In April we celebrated ten years of serving free hot meals to our local community member in need of food and community. With the help of many St. Juan Diego parishioners we organized a surprise, special up-scale dinner. The entree was supplied and prepared by the head chef of Veritable Quandary, each guest was given a gift bag, and we even had a string quartet. Through the years, as we have listened to comments from our guests, we became aware that many times they were at the mercy of transportation schedules, and would arrive at Faith Cafe hours early. They also enjoy a time to relax and talk with others in a safe, friendly environment. With this thought in mind we started Community Time an hour before dinner is served. In the winter our guests come in out of the rain and warm up with coffee and hot chocolate. In summer we moved the gathering outside into the fresh air. This year St. Juan Diego donations have also made it possible for Faith Cafe to help purchase ceiling fans for the dinning hall and an AED, which we hope we never have to use. But most of all, we thank the parishioners who come help serve dinner on Sunday afternoon. During this Year of Mercy, we hope to see even more of you enjoying the company of our guests.
