St. Juan Diego Inclement Weather Policy In general, St. Juan Diego will follow the decisions of PCC Rock Creek concerning delays and cancellations for snow and inclement weather. All parish functions (including daily Mass) whether held at the church or elsewhere will be delayed or cancelled following PCC Rock Creek. It is always best to err on the side of caution. For example, if classes are cancelled in the morning you should assume that parish activities will also be cancelled for the evening. (Even if weather conditions improve.) Regarding Faith Formation, check your . When in doubt, assume that activities are cancelled. Saturday Vigil, Sunday, and Holy Day Masses will not be cancelled unless absolutely necessary. Hospitality Help Needed for 5pm & 12:15pm Masses Once a month for the third or fourth Sunday of the month. Please Jeanne Sabbe if you can help: jeannesabbe@comcast.net. Year-end Donations With the calendar year-end approaching, you may be starting to do tax planning. For this reason, we wanted to remind you about the processes for accepting donations of securities to benefit St. Juan Diego parish. Please contact the parish office to obtain the Authorization Form necessary for the sale and transfer of securities. Please be assured that donations made for the benefit of St. Juan Diego are not subject to any processing fees by the Archdiocese. All proceeds from the sales are passed along to the St. Juan Diego fund designated by the donor. Any securities donations intended as a tax deduction for 2014 should be initiated well before the Christmas holidays. We cannot guarantee that stock transactions received close to the Christmas and New Years holidays will be transferred to an Archdiocesan account before December 31, as this time is extremely busy for brokerage firms. Holiday or inclement weather closures may also cause further delays. Thank you for considering a donation to St. Juan Diego as part of your year-end tax planning. Thank you for your generous support of our Parish November 15/ People Collection Basket... $ 4, Electronically or by mail... $ Deadline for bulletin articles is Tuesday Thank you for your help!

4 there is to be a cross, with the figure of Christ crucified upon it, a cross clearly visible to the assembled people. GIRM, no. 308 Thanks to your generosity our Matching Campaign has received enough pledges to pay the church construction debt and the Springville Road assessment. We have received a number of questions about the possibility of purchasing a crucifix and/or piano with additional monies raised. We hope that the following will answer some of those questions. Crux Gemmata: The most ancient of Christian crosses; jeweled and ornamented without a corpus. Christus Victor/Christus Rex: Next crosses to appear in Christian communities; crucified but strong, healthy, robed, crowned, eyes open. Christus Mortuus: Appears during the European plagues; dead, visible wounds, broken body, eyes closed. Although it is permissible to use the processional cross as the main crucifix in a church, that was never the long term intent at St. Juan Diego. Around the time of construction the artist Tomasz Misztal was commissioned ($7,000) to design a crucifix for St. Juan Diego. A committee at the time chose one of his designs, a representation of this design now hangs in the narthex. That design does not seem to meet the criteria of a cross, with the figure of Christ crucified upon it. In any case, enough time has passed that a new committee should be formed and the process begun anew. This committee does not now exist and will not be formed until the Finance and Pastoral Councils agree that sufficient funds and pledges have been collected. Once formed, the first step for this committee would be to educate itself and the parish on the history of the crucifix in the Catholic Church. The basics of which are outlined above. A budget would also be established based on the donations received for the crucifix. The committee would look at currently available crucifix designs that can be found in catalogs and on artist websites. If several currently available designs seemed appropriate the parish would have a chance to ask questions and make comments. A design would be selected and ordered. If available designs do not seem appropriate to the architecture of St. Juan Diego then artists would need to be sought out. After consultation, they would be asked to submit designs. It is probably best to use 2 or 3 artists at this point to see a variety of styles. There would most likely be a cost for these proposed designs. Next, the parish as a whole would be invited to ask questions about and comment on the different designs. Ultimately an artist and a design would be chosen and the crucifix would be constructed and installed within the given budget. Costs at this point are not easy to estimate. St. Pius X recently installed a crucifix from a catalog with a 6 ft. corpus on a 12 x 8 ft. cross that is valued at approximately $60,000. A fiberglass version would be approximately $29,000. Tomasz Misztal estimated more than $60,000 for his design. We would work within the budget of whatever donations we receive for a crucifix. We would, however, not want to just settle for a cross not appropriate to the architecture of St. Juan Diego. I hope that this gives everyone a basic idea of how we might proceed in obtaining a crucifix that would enhance the beautiful worship space of St. Juan Diego. Fr. Terry O Connell Pastor

5 The Needs of A New Song: A New Piano It has been a joy to serve as St. Juan Diego s music ministry coordinator. I feel blessed to express my personal spirituality by making music with our fantastic choir and instrumentalists. When I joined the St. Juan Diego team, I was told that music was a high priority to our community. Along with the entire parish, I am truly grateful for our current Chickering grand piano, which was a generous gift and, at 128 years old, is St. Juan Diego s oldest parishioner. It has been great fun to play and has created fantastic music throughout its lifetime. Unfortunately, pianos do not age like a fine wine, but rather like most household wood furniture. During my 10 months at St. Juan Diego, I have experienced the piano s rapid decline. Our piano cannot remain in tune for more than two weekends. To match its tune, our choir members have been adjusting to sing flatter far from their full potential. It is almost like a magic trick that what you hear sounds fine. If we were to put our piano side-by-side with a regular tuned piano that could be found in most homes, you would be amazed at the difference. This clearly does not help our ministry. Although our piano serves its purpose, it will not last for more than a couple of years. A new piano is vital. With a new piano, I can direct our full choir in a whole new direction with more control over sound and volume. Ultimately, we need something smaller and newer. I ve been commissioned by Fr. Terry and staff to begin looking for new pianos. I am working with our fantastic volunteer pianists to assess our needs. A new purchase would ensure a piano that lasts a long time. The best match for our music ministry would be a baby grand piano with a built-in humidifier to help the instrument remain in tune even with the challenges of our in-floor heating system. Here are three options that I have considered: A Baldwin piano (approximately $40,300) would be a wonderful standard piano. A Yamaha piano (approximately $41,600) would be a good match for our contemporary style of music. A Steinway & Sons music room model (approximately $59,500) would work great sound-wise with our worship space and its unique acoustical elements. The Steinway would be my recommendation. It would be ideal for St. Juan Diego and our pianists. It s an American company based on the East Coast that makes a product that has the same quality feel and sound of more-expensive European models. To help us move toward a new piano, please consider a gift to the Capital Campaign. Whatever you can give will benefit our community and the liturgies here at St. Juan Diego. If you have any questions, I m available by at ddangca@stjuandiego.org or for a personal visit after all the Sunday Masses. Dan Dangca Music Coordinator
