Surely the best known among these is the first reading from today, from which Luke took inspiration when he recounted the miraculous birth of John the Baptist to Zechariah and Elizabeth, and the more miraculous birth of Jesus to Mary and Joseph. In each instance, we are given examples or role models of those who trusted in God. More than examples of those who trust, they are models of selfsurrender. They abandoned their own presuppositions and prejudices about the workings of the world and turned their lives over to belief in a God who can make life grow where none ought to; a God who can turn death around into a new and unimagined life; a God who can, today, take a tiny child of humble parents in an insignificant town and make him into a light for all the world. This is what we, as God s holy family, are called to do each day: to trust not in ourselves and the way we think things should be, but to open ourselves and surrender ourselves in faith to a God of endless promise. Thank you for your kindness and generous support of San Pablo Parish REFLECTING ON GOD S WORD On Christmas we celebrate God becoming human, when the face of creation was changed. We ponder that great mystery of the Incarnation: Jesus is true God and truly human. The divine has entered into communion with the human in the body and soul of Jesus of Nazareth. Christmas is not a single day, however, but an entire season. Today, the Sunday after Christmas, we ponder the Holy Family. What difference does this mystery of the Incarnation make for families? Jesus came to bring together the children of Israel into a new family, a family united not by blood but by faith in him. So in today s Gospel we see some of the first members of that family. Luke s Gospel has been called the Gospel of Jesus as the compassion of God, the Gospel of prayer, the Gospel of the Holy Spirit; we can also think of it as the Gospel of family. He first introduces us to Mary s cousin, Elizabeth, and Elizabeth s husband, Zechariah, parents of John the Baptist. Then we meet Mary and Joseph. Today we meet two other family members, Simeon and Anna, not related by blood, but only by faith in the promises of the God of Israel. Each sees in the child Jesus the glory of Israel and the light for the Gentiles. Christmas reminds us that by baptism into Christ we are now part of God s family. As God s family, God s chosen ones, as Paul reminded the Colossians (3:62), we are to put on heartfelt compassion, kindness, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another.

This Christmas, I want to give you my deepest thanks for your ongoing support to San Pablo Catholic Church and myself, Fr. Luis R. Rivera. This has been a wonderful year. Let this message serve as a simple thank you for your love and respect and for your help and generosity for our parish family. It will be our pleasure if you would also join us for Mass and Prayer this Christmastime. May you have had a blessed Christmas Day and may the Lord keep you and your family in good health always. The doors open at 5:00 PM and the games begin at 7:00 PM. This is percentage bingo. The more players the bigger the prize money. Come and join Fran and John for a fun night which includes a bonanza, cookie jar and of course the Queen or King of Bingo. Soft drinks and sandwiches are available. All proceeds benefit San Pablo Church. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED There is a young woman from Marathon who is in need of a ride to Key West. She is undergoing chemotherapy and needs a ride 5 days a week. The treatment only lasts for thirty(30) minutes. If there is anyone from the parish family who is interested in helping please call KAIR at and ask for Phyllis. Thank You for your kind consideration. ANNUAL WEDDING ANIVERSARY MASS Archbishop Thomas Wenski and the Office of Marriage and Family Life invite all couples in the Archdiocese of Miami celebrating their 25th or 50th and above wedding anniversaries this year to join us for a special Mass on Saturday, February 14th 2015 at 5:30 PM at St. Mary s Cathedral. There will be a photo session with the Archbishop starting at 4:00 PM before the Mass. Certificates will be distributed after the Mass. To register please contact the parish office. Ongoing Activities We welcome anyone new to the area and invite you to register at the office. Registration forms are also available in the pamphlet rack in the church. While at San Pablo, please take a walk through our beautiful prayer gardens. The entrance is located between the church and parish hall. Religious Education Program meets in the Parish Hall. Families with children 1st grade and up meet on Sunday at 12:00 PM. Confirmation class meets at 6:00 PM on Wednesday. Please call Terry Walters at or IslandSun@aol.com The Women s Club meets on the 2nd Monday of the month in the Parish Hall from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. For more information about activities or meetings, call Joyce Hazuka at San Pablo s Hidden Heaven Gift Shop & Bookstore has many beautiful religious items for sale. The shop is located in the parish hall and is open after the Masses on Sunday. The Rosary Group meets First Saturday in the Rosary Noon and every morning 7:30 am before daily Mass. It s a wonderful way to start the day. The Arts & Crafts Ladies meet on Wednesdays from 1:00pm to 4:00pm in the parish hall. Habitat for Humanity of the Middle Keys meets monthly at San Pablo Parish Hall. Volunteers are needed. Call or if your life has been affected by someone s drinking.
