4 Deacon Tommy Adams, Sr. Ordination, First Mass & Reception Tommy Adams, Sr. will be ordained as a Permanent Deacon for St. Joseph Parish at 10:00 AM Mass on Saturday, August 18th in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Lafayette. His first Mass as a Deacon will be celebrated on Sunday, August 19th at 10:00 AM in St. Joseph Church. There will be a reception following Mass in the Family Life Center. Michael J. McGivney, on August 12 th Joe s Café is in need of a Wii. May the Lord bless you for your support of our Religious Education Programs. From an early age Fr. McGivney realized a calling to the Catholic priesthood. After studying in several seminaries, he was ordained in His first assignment, on January 2, 1878, was as curate of St. Mary s Church in New Haven, Conn. Then in 1884 he was named pastor of St. Thomas Church in Thomaston, Conn. With the help of several men of St. Mary s Parish and worried about the religious faith and financial stability of the immigrant families, Fr. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus in Its mission was to help strengthen the faith of the men of his parish and to provide financial assistance to the widows and orphans they left behind in the event of their death. Fr. McGivney was widely known for his tireless work among the parishioners. In January, 1890 he became seriously ill with pneumonia and died on August 14, 1890 at the age of 38. The cause, or process, for Fr. McGivney s sainthood, was opened by Hartford Archbishop Daniel A. Cronin, in December The cause was presented to the Vatican in 2000, where it has been under review by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. On March 16, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI approved a decree recognizing the heroic virtue of Fr. Michael J. McGivney. The pope s declaration significantly advances the priest s progress toward sainthood and gives him the distinction of Venerable Servant of God. With the Pope s recent decree, and the authentication of a miracle at Fr. McGivney s intercession, the priest could be beatified. A second miracle would be required for canonization. If canonized, Fr. McGivney would be the first American-born priest to be so honored. All of us who are members of the Knights of Columbus are profoundly grateful for the recognition of the holiness of our founder, said Supreme Knight, Carl Anderson. The strength of the Knights of Columbus today is a testament to Fr. McGivney s timeless vision, his holiness and his ideals. Still maintaining its headquarters in New Haven, the Knights of Columbus is the largest Catholic Fraternal Organization in the world. With more than 1.7 million members, it has councils in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Central America, the Caribbean Islands, the Philippines, Guam and most recently, Poland. 6 STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS Feast of the Assumption The roots of this week s feast of the Assumption can be traced back at least to the fifth century, when it is noted in the Armenian lectionary. Celebrated in Jerusalem, the feast in honor of the Theotokos, the Mother of God, became the principal feast of Mary throughout the Christian world. The place of celebration was at the tomb of Mary in Gethsemane and was therefore known as the Dormition of Mary. In some cultures this feast is celebrated today with a resting statue of Mary, much like a wake service of modern times. The liturgy of this feast provides images of the place of your rest in Psalm 132, and reverence for the Ark of the Covenant that held the signs of the Promise. Like that Ark, Mary is for us the ark of the Savior, the one who bore the Son of God. When the doctrine of the Assumption was defined in 1950 the Gospel reading for the feast was changed to include the verses of Mary s song, the Magnificat. The scripture readings for both the vigil Mass and the Mass of the day speak to us of life after death as well as the path to be followed in order to reach it. The key to this promised immortality is found as we take to heart the words of the vigil s Gospel, Blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. The Buzzard If you put a buzzard in a pen that is 6 ft. by 8 ft. and is entirely open at the top, the bird, in spite of its ability to fly, will be an absolute prisoner. The reason is that a buzzard always begins a flight from the ground with a run of 10 to 12 feet. Without space to run, as is its habit, it will not even attempt to fly, but will remain a prisoner for life in a jail with no top. The Bat The ordinary bat that flies around at night is a remarkably nimble creature in the air, cannot take off from a level place. If it is placed on the floor or flat ground, all it can do is shuffle about helplessly and, no doubt, painfully, until it reaches some slight elevation from which it can throw itself into the air. Then, at once, it takes off like a flash. The Bumble Bee A bumble bee, if dropped into an open tumbler, will be there until it dies, unless it is taken out. It never sees the means of escape at the top, but persists in trying to find some way out through the sides near the bottom. It will seek a way where none exist, until it completely destroys itself. THE PEOPLE In many ways, we are like the buzzard, the bat, and the bumble bee. We struggle about with all our problems and frustrations, never realizing that all we have to do is look up! That s the answer, the escape route and the solution to any problem Just look up! Sorrow looks back, worry looks around, but faith looks up! It s best toasted and slathered with butter. But just plain, right off the loaf, is good enough. In the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school, the nuns announced that there would be a special cinnamon bread treat for lunch. The bread slices were on a large tray so all the students could help themselves. Fearing that the first kids in line might load up, depriving the others, the nuns put up a sign by the bread tray: Take only one. God is watching. Farther along the lunch line, at the other end of the table, was an unlabeled tray of chocolate chip cookies. One child whispered to another, Take all the cookies you want. God is watching the bread. In today s Gospel, Jesus tells us he is the bread of life. 6 We can take all the bread we want. God is watching.
