6 STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS Belonging to the Lord As we close in on Christmas, I begin to focus more intently: Some plans will have to be set aside. Maybe I don t really have to make one more trip to the store if I have done what is essential for the coming celebration. One of those essentials is to belong to Jesus Christ, as St. Paul reminds us. Just as it s easy to get distracted by seasonal advertising pitches and lose track of what is really necessary, so can we easily overlook the simplicity of the Christian message. If we allow ourselves to belong to Jesus Christ, to build a relationship with Him and seek His mind in all that we do, then we will find the real peace of this season. To that end, I am going to try my best to set aside an hour in the coming days, perhaps in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, to simply and silently belong to the Lord. Mark Neilsen Jesus The Paradox Jesus teaches by word and example. In the crib he has only a few Boohoo s to offer; nothing intelligible. Here is the first paradox: infinite power is power-less. But be careful! This child, so tender and mild, is dynamite! What the child in the crib teaches by example and which he later speaks about undermines our personal attitudes, value system, and behavior. The teaching of his example, vastly more powerful than all of Jesus words put together, culminates in the cross, the ultimate powerlessness. In the teaching of Jesus, true power is powerlessness. The greatest security is to have none. The purest hope is in the midst of hopelessness. True faith is full of doubts. And true love is nothing but service and indeed, service unto death. Thomas Keating Seeing Clearly We were made for God. Only by being in some respect like Him, only by being a manifestation of His beauty, loving kindness, wisdom or goodness, has any earthly Beloved excited our love. It is not that we have loved them too much, but that we did not quite understand what we were loving. It is not that we shall be asked to turn from the, so dearly familiar, to a Stranger. When we see the face of God we shall know that we have always known it. He has been a party to, has make, sustained and moved moment by moment within, all our earthly experiences of innocent love. All that was true love in them was, even on earth, far more His than ours, and ours only because His. In Heaven there will be no anguish and no duty of turning away from our earthly Beloveds. First, because we shall have turned already from the portraits to the Original, from the rivulets to the Fountain, from the creatures He made lovable to Love Himself. But secondly, because we shall find them all in Him. By loving Him more than them, we shall love them more than we do now. Loving God, all of Creation shows the touch of your hand. May we come to appreciate the goodness that surrounds us as a foretaste of heaven. Amen.
