4 PARISH LIFE MEDICAL ETHICS AND SENIOR CONCERNS SEMINAR Presented by: Ryan Verret, Director of the Louisiana Right to Life & Center for Medical Ethics Monday, October 22nd at 7:00 PM in the St. Joseph Family Life Center. Since its inception, the Louisiana Right to Life Foundation has been equally concerned with protecting older people and people with disabilities from the denial of lifesaving medical treatment. They are working to protect lives by answering the questions that people ask about the Ethics of End of Life Care. Through public education and proactive legislation we can encourage a life-affirming medical ethic at all stages of life and mount opposition to the culture of death. Please plan to join us for this informative discussion. For more information: Contact Linda at or at lancona@diolaf.org. 6 GIFTS In today s readings, we discover that material wealth alone does not keep us from discipleship. We will see that there are other gifts more important than material wealth, but even so, it is how we use our gifts that matters most. Today s scriptures point to the value of the gifts of wisdom, trusting in God, and letting our actions reflect the love of God from within. It is not gold that causes us to fall, but rather the desire for gold above all other things. From the readings in Wisdom and Hebrews, we find the source of God s gifts in our lives. Wisdom is more valuable than worldly possessions. In Hebrews, we are challenged to look at our own values and admit honestly what controls our lives. Jesus Look of Love The rich young man was so full of zeal. He had a burning desire to be a disciple. But when he heard the cost, he walked away sad. I will never forget the look of love Jesus gave when he saw him coming. I have no doubt that when our nameless young man walked away sad, Jesus look of love followed him. Acceptance rather than expectations! Jesus had an incredible ability to love people where they were. He didn t demand that they change on the spot. So I also try to look with love at the person with whom I am in conflict. That look of love almost always brings comfort, and I find myself filling up with acceptance rather than expectations. Martha Wiederkehr A Tree Full of Angels 6 READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Gal 4:22-24, 26-27, 31-5:1; Lk 11:29-32 Tuesday: Gal 5:1-6; Lk 11:37-41 Wednesday: Gal 5:18-25; Lk 11:42-46 Thursday: 2 Tm 4:10-17b; Lk 10:1-9 Friday: Eph 1:11-14; Lk 12:1-7 Saturday: Eph 1:15-23; Lk 12:8-12 Sunday: Is 53:10-11; Ps 33; Heb 4:14-16; Mk 10:35-45 [42-45] CAMELS AND NEEDLES Not long ago a group of professors at Boston College studied people in America who are super-rich, who have $25 million or more. There are approximately 115,000 of them. Some were born into wealth; others made their wealth, while a few fell into sudden riches. You might think that having no money worries would simply make life a breeze, but you would be mistaken. Surprisingly, those who participated in the study revealed that wealth affects every aspect of their lives, and not always for the good. Marriage and friendship can be difficult ( Do they love me or love my money? ). Rich parents worry that their children will do nothing worthwhile with their lives. In ancient times the Jews believed that wealth was a sign of divine favor. To the early descendants of Abraham, wealth meant owning large flocks of sheep, goats, and cattle. By the time Jesus encountered the rich young man in today s Gospel, people acquired wealth by farming the land and through trade. Jesus challenged the man to give away his possessions to free himself of the burden of wealth that was keeping him from the fullest possible life with God. Wealth in itself is not evil, but evil can result if we come to feel owned by our possessions. Modern Jewish teaching is not far from our own Christian understanding of wealth. The things of this world are important, but temporary. Wealth, whether in the form of skills, time, or money, is not an end but a means: a means to create a home; raise children; provide hospitality; to give time, attention, love, charity, and money; and to share with church and community for the well-being of all. Jesus promises that the one who gives up any possessions for his sake will be saved. Copyright 2011, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.
