Baptism class is held the third Thursday of each month at 6:00pm. This can be done at least seven (7) months before the birth in order to make proper sacramental preparations. SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE Diocesan policy requires a minimum of six (6) months of sacramental preparations for marriage. Engaged couples are invited to call the Pastor for an appointment. By concluding the year with this feast we are proclaiming our faith that Jesus Christ is the one and only king over all seasons, all peoples, and all of creation. At the end of time as we know it, Christ s work of restoring all things to unity and harmony with their Creator God will be completed. This Sunday, when we claim Christ as both our Shepherd and our King, we recognize our own calling to participate in Christ s saving work by caring for those whom Jesus calls the least ones (Matthew 25:45). TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today we have a modern feast, less than a century old, and placed at the very end of the liturgical cycle of Sundays only in In 1925, the world was in a sorry state from the vantage point of Pope Pius XI. The winds of war had swept the map of Europe raw, and ancient Christian dynasties had fallen in Russia and Spain. Although the Great War had ended, wars were breaking out everywhere. Fascism was already in control in Italy, and Nazism was on the horizon for Germany. The disorder making its claim on the human race was, the pope felt, an insult to the Divine Order. Pius XI designated the last Sunday in October as a day of universal recognition of the kingship of Christ. Creating this feast was an act of bravery by the pope, who was standing up against idolatry of the state and the dehumanizing forces of the modern world, things that are not hard to detect in today s world as well. In 1969 it seemed fitting to move the feast to a place of honor at the end of the year, a way of summing up the whole movement of the liturgical year toward the perfection of the Kingdom of God. In recent decades, many Protestant churches have adopted this day from the new Roman calendar, so it is shared now with the Church of England, the Episcopal, Presbyterian, and Lutheran churches, and others. 3 Solemnity of Christ the King On the last Sunday of each liturgical year, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Christ the King. Pope Pius XI instituted this feast in 1925 with his encyclical Quas Primas ( In the first ) to respond to growing nationalism and secularism. He recognized that these related societal ills would breed increasing hostility against the Church. His encyclical reminds the faithful that while governments and philosophies come and go, Christ reigns as king forever. Jesus is the center of creation; and so the attitude demanded of us as true believers is that of recognizing and accepting in our lives the centrality of Jesus Christ, in our thoughts, in our words and in our works. Homily of Pope Francis Solemnity of Christ the King November 24, 2013 The Kingdom is Holis c Secularism divides our public selves from our private selves. When governments limit the rights of religious ministries, secularists claim that religious freedom is not harmed because we still have freedom of worship we are free in private but not in public. But the kingdom of God calls us to a whole life of worship and service in the public square. We cannot worship on Sunday and then deny Christ s teaching in the way we run our ministries throughout the week. Nationalism, on the other hand, divides our loyalties. It is good to love one s country, but ultimate loyalty is due only to Christ and his kingdom. Ideologies that ask us to put our nation above Christ and his Church are incompatible with service to the kingdom. The Kingdom Demands Discipleship We must work every day, with the help of the Holy Spirit, to draw closer to Jesus. In our own increasingly post- Christian society, we cannot be complacent in our spiritual lives. To acknowledge the kingship of Christ means that we should dedicate ourselves to prayer, to building up our families and our parish communities, and to bringing healing to a broken world. The Kingdom is Humble Jesus inaugurates a kingdom that grows through humble acts of service. Even as her freedom to carry out her ministries is threatened, the Church must patiently continue to serve the poor, educate the young, welcome the migrant, visit the prisoner, heal the sick, bury the dead, and love others. The kingdoms of this world at times are sustained by arrogance, rivalries and oppression; the reign of Christ is a kingdom of justice, love and peace. For a Christian, speaking of power and strength means referring to the power of the Cross, and the strength of Jesus love: a love which remains steadfast and complete, even when faced with rejection, and it is shown as the fulfillment of a life expended in the total surrender of oneself for the benefit of humanity. 4 Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick Given the decreasing number and availability of priests, observing the advance measures below will reduce the number of emergency calls for a priest to administer the Sacrament to a Catholic who is near-death. The Sacrament of the Sick is not a Sacrament only for those who are dying. This Sacrament should be celebrated at the beginning of a serious illness, not at the end of life when death is imminent and the dying person is often unconscious or too weak to confess sins. Catholics who are ill and/or planning to enter the hospital and wish to receive the Sacrament of the Sick are to call their parish office and make an appointment with their priest to receive the Sacrament before entering the hospital. Parishioners with chronic illness or in advanced age and frailty are also urged to call their parish office and make an appointment with their priest to receive the Sacrament of the Sick, or they may attend the communal services for reception of the Sacrament when announced in the parish bulletin. Important: Once a Catholic has received the Sacrament of the Sick, there is no need to receive the Sacrament again during the same illness, nor is it necessary for a priest to be present at the time of death. If the sick person recovers, that person may (not must ) receive the Sacrament again in the case of another grave illness. Hospitalization: If entering a Catholic hospital, please register as a Catholic and notify the Spiritual Care Department. At a commercial or denominational hospital, please register as a Catholic and ask the Pastoral Care Department to notify the Catholic chaplain. Hospice: Hospice patients frequently die within a short period of time after they are placed on hospice care. If the patient has not already received the Sacrament of the Sick (either at a hospital, a nursing home, or the parish), the patient or a family member should contact their parish priest immediately to request the Sacrament before the patient is near death. The Church uses these precepts to remind us that Christian life requires a commitment to prayer and active participation in the liturgy and sacraments. If we fall below this bare-minimum level, we can t rightly consider ourselves to be in full communion with the Catholic Church. Each of the precepts of the Catholic Church is a requirement. 7 ORANGE CHRISTIAN SERVICES CHRISTMAS FOOD BAGS AND CHRISTMAS TOYS Orange Christian Services is issuing a plea for help. Please consider a monetary donation to help a family have a better Christmas. Families of 5 or more receive a turkey plus fixings. Smaller families receive a chicken and fixings. This year, we have a goal of 600 bags. As Orange Christian Services can obtain many of these food items from the SE TX Food Bank at 16 cents per pound so monetary donations will help the most. $25 will include a turkey and all the fixings. HO! HO! HO! It is that time of year again! The gift tags for needy children will be available in the church foyer soon from Orange Christian Services. Many of these children would otherwise receive little or nothing for Christmas. PLEASE DO NOT WRAP GIFTS. Place them in a Christmas shopping bag and SECURELY FASTEN TAG TO THE GIFT. Thanks to all the contributors who have funded this upgrade project. All the classrooms, hallways, offices and bathrooms are complete. We s ll need to convert the library and the gym. If you thought about contribu ng and just didn't get around to it, now is a good me. If you contributed earlier and can contribute again, please do so. All previous contribu ons have gone to procure materials.
