2 OUR LADY OF LORETTO HOMETOWN PAGE 2 First of Lent Dear Parish Family of Our Lady of Loretto, St. Paul centers his faith on the Cross of Christ and the way it contradicts normal human expectations and the Greco-Roman wisdom of his day. Paul s preaching and his understanding of the Cross is in total conflict with his society s understanding of what makes for success and today s society. In fact, continues to be even more true in today s world of global powers, both political and economic. Paul was attempting to teach us to recognize that the relationship between Christians is modeled on the atoning death of Christ as salvation for all people. The body of Christ, the Church that is composed of all of us, is different in the way it acts and behaves from all other earthly bodies be it business, political, or even charitable. Our motivation is to be reflections of Christ by loving as God loves us, the Cross of Christ. For St. Paul, Christianity has been entrusted with a vision of God reconciling the world to himself in Christ, from the position of servant and not a conquering hero. The God who is Jesus-like is not comfortable, not immutable, perhaps not whole, not powerful or authoritarian as human egos imagine. The righteous cry out, but God does not bring this world to an end. Instead, the righteous are vindicated by the Spirit active in groans and weakness. However, this Christ of Paul s is not the Christ that many Christians embrace. Their Savior is one who will conquer his enemies with worldly power and might. We ask ourselves as we begin this time of Lent, what is our image of Christ and is it the same understanding of Jesus, who saves us by the Cross that St. Paul proclaimed. Sincerely,
