2 OUR LADY OF LORETTO HOMETOWN - OAK LAWN Page 2 Dear Parish Family, The Gospel today takes place at a banquet to which Jesus has been invited. Jesus notices that at this banquet, as the guests arrive, they tend to choose the most honorable places. The comment he makes seems to be simply a piece of practical advice: choose the lowest place, because, if there has to be a rearrangement (to seat everyone according to rank), it s much better to be promoted to a higher place than required to move down to a lower one. But, as in all parables, Jesus enters into the everyday life of his audience which he knows so well. He plays upon the feelings of honor and shame which run so deep in the culture of his time, and all societies, past and present. Imagine to have to yield your seat, move down and take the lowest place of all. Think of the humiliation, the loss of face involved. In the Gospel, Jesus uses the setting of a meal to tell the guests something about the kingdom of God. The values of God are so different from the values of this world. If you desire to sit at the right of God at the banquet of eternal life, in God s perspective, then you had better spend time now with the apparently worthless ones - the poor, the lame, the outsiders - the ones who can give you no prestige in the eyes of this world. The parable concludes by raising the question, what reward do you want: the reward of this world, or the blessings of God? If this world is all you are concerned with, then offer hospitality to those who can repay you now, such as the wealthy, the important, and the ones who will be able to do you favors. But, if you want to enjoy the hospitality of God, associate with those closest to God s heart as Scripture states- the poor, the widowed, and the orphaned. Sincerely, Fr. Tom UNDERSTANDING THE MASS Participating at Sunday Mass is the most important act that Catholics do. The Penitential Act When we come to Mass, we come as we are. Be aware of your humanity. None of us are perfect. Every one of us has made mistakes. Recognizing this, we ask God for forgiveness. The Penitential Act of Mass is a form of confession and absolution. Lord, have mercy. The Kyrie The Kyrie is a brief litany in which we ask Christ the Lord to have mercy on us. The Kyrie is an ancient Greek prayer which goes back to the earliest worship of the Church. It is often sung, and there are hundreds of musical settings for this prayer. The Gloria At all Sunday Masses, except those in Lent and Advent, the Gloria is sung. This joyful prayer is a response to the forgiveness that we have just received. We praise, bless, adore, glorify, and thank God for all he has done for us. Hosanna in the highest! Collect The Collect places before God our collective needs. The celebrant begins with the words, Let us pray. Then, there is a moment of silence, a time when we can collect ourselves and begin our prayer. Now is the time we can place any intention we want to place before God. In the prayer that follows, the priest collects all the prayers of the people gathered for this Mass, and he summarizes them in the Collect. He offers a specific prayer that the Church has assigned for that day. Did you know that Catholics all over the world hear the same Collect? Some of these prayers are over a thousand years old. Others were composed in your lifetime. The central part of any Collect is the petition. We re asking God to do something. Place all your intentions into the hands of the priest, who puts them before God on your behalf. The priest says, Let us pray. He never says, I. When we speak the word Amen, we are sealing those prayers and claiming them as our own.

3 SUNDAY AUGUST 28, 2016 Page 3 News and notes The Heart Connection Little Company of Mary Hospital will be offering The Heart Connection, a children s grief support program beginning Monday, September 19th, from 6-7:30 pm. A Spanish speaking grief support group will be offered at the same time and on the same dates. The sessions last eight weeks and are for children between the ages of 5 and 18. Each age group is facilitated by trained professionals with a real love and concern for participants. They are only able to accept 32 children, so registration is accepted on a first come, first served basis. This is a free service available to grieving families that includes dinner for parents and children. Register by calling the Pastoral Care Department, Monday through Friday, 9 am to 4 pm, at ; for Spanish speaking services, call Until children are quite sure a person is no more, and will never be, they cannot finish the work of mourning, and if they cannot finish it, they cannot free themselves to go on with life and love and growing. Advocate Christ Hospital Medical Center is offering a free 6 week series of classes, held every Wednesday, 6-7 pm, that will provide education and exercises to work toward a healthy spine. To register, call Classes will be held in the ground floor Therapy Gym. Classes begin September 21st. PARISH ACTIVITIES Would you like to become an Extraordinary Minster of the Eucharist at Mass? It s a beautiful and fulfilling (and needed) ministry. There is a two-part training session coming up that will be held at Queen of Martyrs (102nd & Central Park) on Tuesdays, September 6th and 13th, from 7-9:15 pm. Dr. Mary Amore is the presenter and a much sought after speaker. If you re considering this ministry please call the rectory ( ), and give us your name; we will call and register you. There is no cost. This is a great workshop for the new minsters in our parish. Religious Education Classes Start Sunday, September 18th All parents and children are asked to meet in church at 9:30 am on September 18th, the first day of RE! If you haven t registered yet, please do so ASAP! We have a great program and wonderful teachers. Let your children learn about the great love God has for them and how they can trust and love Him forever. Marist Reunion for The Class of 2011 This 5 year reunion will be held on Friday, September 23, 6-9 pm.
