Proulx After the Introit, the congregation will be called to order by the Deacon from the rear of the Nave: When the Lord comes, he will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness, and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Therefore in the light of Christ, let us confess our sins. (1 Corinthians 4:5) The congregation will kneel as able. After a time of silence all say Father eternal, giver of light and grace, we have sinned against you and against our neighbor, in what we have thought, in what we have said and done, through ignorance, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We have wounded your love, and marred your image in us. We are sorry and ashamed, and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past; and lead us out from darkness to walk as children of light. Amen The celebrant says May the God who called Isaiah and Jeremiah to proclaim God's Word to the nations awaken within us the desire to heed their warnings and hear their messages of grace. May the God who guided Ruth and protected Esther surround us through this season of watchful waiting. May the God who called Mary and Joseph to prepare themselves for the miracle of Messiah's birth empower us to forsake our sins and welcome the promise of Christ's coming among us. And may Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through the grace of Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit, keep us in eternal life. Amen.

Merciful God, who sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Children's Chapel Procession The congregation is seated for the lessons. The First Lesson Malachi 3:1-4 See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight indeed, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts. But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner's fire and like fullers' soap; he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to the LORD in righteousness. Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the LORD as in the days of old and as in former years.

4 Canticle of Zechariah (see insert) The Second Lesson Philippians 1:3-11 I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ. It is right for me to think this way about all of you, because you hold me in your heart, for all of you share in God's grace with me, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. For God is my witness, how I long for all of you with the compassion of Christ Jesus. And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight to help you to determine what is best, so that in the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God. 5 The Gospel Luke 3:1-6 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Emperor Tiberius, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was ruler of Galilee, and his brother Philip ruler of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias ruler of Abilene, during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. He went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah, "The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth; and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.'" 9 This morning we welcome the Rev'd Deacon Matthew Perreault as a part of our liturgical leadership. Matthew is a canonically resident in the Anglican Diocese of Calgary (Canada) and is studying at Nashotah House for this academic year. We are delighted he has agreed to do the duties of "Deacon of the Mass" from time to time until the spring of Thank you Matthew! Nursery - Children and babies are always welcome in church but if your family would like to utilize our nursery, we have paid staff to care for children (including babies) during Sunday's 9:30 am liturgy. There are two other options available if your child needs a break: you are welcome to use the library, or the connecting room to the nursery where there is a rocking chair. The service can still be heard from either place. If you need help finding the nursery or the library, please ask an usher. Children's Chapel at the 9:30 am Liturgy - Children's chapel is for children ages Children who want to participate in Children's Chapel may follow Katie Wiese out of the Nave, following the "Collect of the Day." Children rejoin their families at the sharing of the "Peace." Christian Formation for Elementary Students - Sunday School will begin immediately following the 9:30 am Liturgy and end at 11:30 am. Advent Audio Diaries For a number of years, Gary Manning has produced daily audio diaries during Lent. These reflections are usually around 10 minutes long and focus on one of the readings from the lessons assigned for the Daily Office. As an experiment, Gary will be recording a daily audio diary every day during Advent (from Sunday, December 2nd through Monday, December 24...with a bonus Christmas Day episode!). He will post the link to each day s recording on his personal Facebook page, the Trinity Church Facebook page, and his blog ( Each day s diary will be posted by 5 p.m. You can also signup to receive direct notification of each day s recording via RSS feed by following this link: It is Gary s hope that these daily audios will assist you in keeping a more intentional Advent.

10 The Season of Advent is here! - The decorating committee has begun "greening" the church for the Advent and Christmas season. Since this is not a budgeted item, the committee needs to know how many greens and flowers they can purchase. Please use the envelope found in your pew or click on the donate tab on Trinity's website. The donation deadline is TODAY, December 9. Join the Christmas Eve Choir - Are you unable to commit to the Trinity Choir for the full season, but would like to sing? Christmas Eve, December 24th at 10 pm provides that great opportunity! Rehearsals in December will focus on Advent and Christmas music. Attend 2 Thursday nights, December 13 and 20, from 7:00-8:30 pm for fun music & good fellowship. Contact Tom at thomas.koester@mu.edu or for more information & to indicate your interest. Compline and Conversation in Advent Continues... For two more Thursday evenings in Advent, December 13, and 20, from 7:00-8:00 p.m., Gary Manning invites parishioners to join him in the Chapel of the Ascension for Compline by Candlelight, followed by a time of quiet conversation. While Compline is a shortened liturgy (usually taking less than 10 minutes to complete), Compline by Candlelight will include several opportunities for silence, which will lengthen the service to approximately 20 minutes. There will then be an opportunity for folks to exit the Chapel if they desire, or they may stay for an additional 10 minutes of silence and contemplation, soft, seasonally appropriate music will be played during this 10 minute period to set the mood. At 7:30 p.m., Gary will lead a conversation, for anyone interested, centered upon the Collect for the Week (Advent 1, 2, and 3...found in the Book of Common Prayer, pp. 211 & 212). The evening will conclude no later than 8:00 p.m. Please consider attending at least one of these opportunities, as your schedule permits. Set aside some intentional time to pray in a sacred space with God s people during this holy season.

11 Living Well through Advent 2018 Practicing Generosity With Heart, Soul, Strength, and Mind A limited number of this seasonal resource from Living Compass is available in the Narthex and on the tables in the parish hall. Pick one up and use it as an individual reflection to provide a foundation for seeking a deeper experience of Advent, an experience that will help prepare us for the true meaning of Christmas. Hanging of the Greens Please help the decorating committee on Sunday, December 23, following the 9:30 am liturgy to hang the greens inside and out in preparation for the celebration of the birth of the Christ Child. Speak with Dennis Mehalopoulos for specific directions. Tips regarding 2018 year end contributions *If possible, please pay your remaining 2018 pledge before year end. Any contribution received on or before December 31, 2018 will be reported on your 2018 Contribution Statement, and, therefore, can be used as a 2018 tax deduction Contribution Statements will be sent out the last week in January. *To be sure any year-end contributions are credited for 2018 tax purposes, the contribution must be at the church no later than Monday, December 31, If no one is in the office, just drop the contribution through the mail slot. The mail slot is located East of the parking lot doors.
