Our annual Fall Fes val will be held on Sunday, November 11, immediately a er the 11:20 AM service. The usual crowd favorites will return great food, fun games, inflatables for all ages! Live music by Texas Country band Small Town Habit will make the celebra on even more special. Invite your friends and plan to celebrate at this free event. Adult III Thanksgiving Lunch NOVEMBER 15 Our Adult III Department will gather to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday, November 15, in the Fellowship Hall from 11:30 AM 1:00 PM. Join us in a spirit of gra tude to God as we share a delicious meal of turkey, stuffing, and cranberry sauce, listen to our own Yuri McCoy on the piano, then receive a message of the importance of being together and our reliance on God and one another from Greg Funderburk, Minister for Pastoral Care. Manna Thanksgiving Banquet On Sunday, November 18, the Manna Ministry will host a Thanksgiving Banquet for our neighbors who are homeless or hungry in the Fellowship Hall from 4:00-8:00 PM. 2 Sodzo Follow-up Susan Moore Celebrates 20 Years at South Main On November 11, our worship will focus on the blessing of joy that arises when we work together in God s service. As we do so, we ll also celebrate Susan Moore s 20th anniversary of ministry at South Main. Please join your church family as we worship, then lean into the joy of being together as we move out onto the church lawn for Fall Fes val following the 11:20 service. In September, a group from South Main went on a mission trip to Maua, Kenya, the home of our mission partner, Sodzo Interna onal. Many of the par cipants were first- mers with respect to this par cular mission site and, as it is with any new adventure, they went with a certain picture in their heads of what might come. While we know that image is probably inaccurate, we step into that experience framed by what we an cipate and adjust from there. Robbie Ma eson was one of these first- mers and was kind enough to write about actually being in Kenya and experiencing the work God is doing through His people there. The trip to SODZO I par cipated in this fall was an eyeopening experience to the breadth of work the organiza on does for the boys at the farm and the people in the surrounding community. We were able to see the full scope of SODZO by visi ng a drop-in center for boys on the street, the farm where boys are being rehabilitated, the community groups which help boys re-integrate back into their communi es, the staff and volunteers of SODZO, and even a boy who has graduated from the program and is now in trade school. This was a great visual for the importance of the work done by SODZO. My role for the team was to speak to the community groups about small business development. These groups are less than two years old, but have now expanded from the 30-person original group to over 5,000 people in many groups across the region. These groups work together to loan each other money to gain immediate needs like water and to build up work that can be sustainable. It was very powerful to see the amount of energy surrounding these groups. I am very impressed with the staff and leadership of the organiza on and I am honored to be a member of a church that supports such an impac ul and important organiza on. 3 Family Ministry 527 Tribe The 527 Tribe is South Main s tween ministry. We are the fi h, sixth, and seventh graders who meet in what used to be the Ac vi es Building. Greg Taylor, Ryan Lane, David Bernal, Cindy Hippel, Lynda McKnight, and Bobbye Kolter are our Sunday School teachers. We split our Sunday School classes into boys and girls, with the boys mee ng on the recently converted stage in the gym and the girls mee ng in the newly remodeled Pine Room. In addi on to Sunday School, we spend me together on Wednesdays, where we simply pause and spend me with God. Over the past year, the 527 Tribe has taken ownership of this space, which has quickly become a sacred and consistent place, where we feel connected and loved. Having a space of your own where you feel comfortable and accepted is an especially big deal for our age group. If you can channel your middle school self, you might recall the need for such a place. South Main created the 527 Tribe by doing just this. We spent a lot of me thinking about what adolescent youth need and want to thrive, from the furniture to the food! O en people like to joke about what it s like to be an adolescent, or to teach adolescent youth, but in doing that, we miss the glory that comes with this life stage. The 527 Tribe is brilliant, soaking up every bit of informa on we see and hear. This year alone, we have talked inten onally about race, good changes, challenging changes in our lives, why God s Word is important, and how we use our bibles to find scripture to guide us. The 527 Tribe is energe c, bold, constantly moving, talking, dancing, reading, and playing. We are typically weird, and consistently insecure. Tribe gives us a safe space to be ourselves. The Tribe is also tex ng our friends on Saturday night to make sure we are all matching on Sunday. The Tribe is lots and lots of Fruit Loops because we are never full, and ge ng way too involved with the characters from the Inheritance Cycle series. These are a only a few of the reasons why the 527 Tribe is so significant. We have a saying in our space that is wri en in large le ers across the wall that sums up the way we feel about the Tribe. Your generosity of spirit, kind words, and compassionate hospitality have helped my family tremendously as we transi on to a new place and a new congrega on. Evan and Finley have proudly worn their new Astros and Texans shirts to school, much to the chagrin of their dad, the Chicago Cubs fan! As a family we have enjoyed the zoo membership you gave us and ea ng at many wonderful restaurants with the gi cards you so generously provided. We are overwhelmed by your love and overjoyed to be a part of this church family. We look forward to following Christ alongside each of you as we grow in friendship. In case you were wondering about what I have planned over the next few months in Adult Discipleship, here are my primary goals for my first year with South Main: 1. Get to know all of you! I plan to meet personally with all of Adult Discipleship leadership, as well as other church members and leaders. I want to hear your faith stories, your experiences with South Main, and learn about the heartbeat of this wonderful congrega on. 2. Provide leadership and accountability. An important part of my role with South Main is to work with our volunteer leaders and others to ensure that we implement adult discipleship with excellence. I will check and recheck how we are func oning, and work with Adult Discipleship leadership to ensure that: 1) our groups and teachers have everything they need to meet consistently and purposefully to make disciples, 2) we engage with and follow up with guests in a way that helps them feel a sense of belonging to South Main and believe that Jesus is Lord, and 3) we create new groups as needed for folks who have yet to connect. 3. Collaborate. I plan to schedule regular gatherings for our Adult Discipleship leaders. At these gatherings we will collaborate over 1) why we have a discipleship ministry, 2) how our discipleship ministry currently func ons, and 3) what ac on steps are needed in our discipleship ministry now and in the near future. Thank you again, South Main family, for your love and friendship. I look forward to many months and years of serving our Lord Jesus together.
