2 THE LITURGY FOR PALM SUNDAY AND EUCHARIST Celebrant: The Rev. Gary B. Manning Prelude: "Fanfare for Palm Sunday" (Don Sipe, Trumpet) The Gathering Time The Congregation gathers in the Narthex. 3 A reading from the prophet Zechariah: Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Lo, your king comest to you; triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. He will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the war-horse from Jerusalem; and the battle bow shall be cut off, and he shall command peace to the nations; his dominion shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. Reader: People: The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God Following a brief time of silence, the Celebrant says People: Celebrant: People: The Lord be with you And also with you Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. The Celebrant continues It is right to praise you, Almighty God, for the acts of love by which you have redeemed us through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. On this day he entered the holy city of Jerusalem in triumph and was proclaimed as King of kings by those who spread their garments and branches of palm along his way. The people raise their palms and palm crosses for the blessing; The Celebrant continues Let these branches be for us signs of his victory, and grant that we who bear them in his name may ever hail him as our King, and follow him in the way that leads to eternal life; who lives and reigns in glory with you and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

4 The Liturgy of the Palms concludes with the singing of the Hosanna; the Procession into the Nave begins and continues with the singing of All glory, laud and honor Hymn: "All glory, laud and honor" (see insert) At the conclusion of the procession, the Celebrant prays the collect: People: Celebrant: The Lord be with you And also with you Let us pray Almighty and everlasting God, whose will it is to restore all things in your well-beloved Son, the King of kings and lord of lords: Mercifully grant that the peoples of the earth, divided and enslaved by sin, may be freed and brought together under his most gracious rule; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. The people are seated Epistle: Philippians 2:5-11 Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

5 Gospel Acclamation Verse: Blessed is he who inherits the kingdom of David our Father; Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Gospel: Luke 19:28-40 After telling a parable to the crowd at Jericho, Jesus went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. When he had come near Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples, saying, "Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying it?' just say this, 'The Lord needs it.'" So those who were sent departed and found it as he had told them. As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, "Why are you untying the colt?" They said, "The Lord needs it." Then they brought it to Jesus; and after throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. As he rode along, people kept spreading their cloaks on the road. As he was now approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of power that they had seen, saying, "Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!" Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, order your disciples to stop." He answered, "I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout out." Homily The Rev. Gary B. Manning

6 Bidding Prayers God of unfailing Love, We come before you on this day with thankful and joyous hearts because your love knows no bounds. No boundaries, limits, or obstacles including those of our own making can thwart your loving kindness from following us all the days of our lives. Silence Lord Jesus Christ, during this upcoming week, we will see how your story of passion mirrors to us how we have tested your love and spurned your compassion. Today you are welcomed with short-lived praise and soonaborted allegiance. Give us an awareness of the ways we forsake you and the Good News you came to bring. Silence As we enter into Holy Week brace us with fortitude and gratitude. Bless us with the assurance that you are with us, world without end. Amen. The Celebrant concludes the biddings with this collect Almighty God, your Son came to us humbly on a donkey's back, and now he sits exalted by your right hand. Help us contemplate the mighty acts of love and compassion he embodied while he walked the path of suffering. Strengthen in us the virtues of loyalty and steadfastness. Grant that we may readily hear his word, follow his teachings, and live in his Spirit. Prepare our hearts, O God, for that day when every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord, to your honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen. Almighty and everliving God, in your tender love for the human race you sent your Son our Savior Jesus Christ to take upon him our human nature, and to suffer death upon the cross, giving us the example of his great humility: Mercifully grant that we may walk in the way of his suffering, and also share in his resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. 13 Nursery - Children and babies are always welcome in church but if your family would like to utilize our nursery, we have paid staff to care for children (including babies) during Sunday's 9:30 am liturgy. Another option, if your child needs a break during the service, you are welcome to use the library, where the service can still be heard. If you need help finding the nursery or the library, please ask an usher. Children's Chapel and Christian Formation are not in session today and next week. They will resume on April 28. The Book Group will meet on Monday, April 15 at 1:30 pm. Wardens Visiting Sessions (Office Hours) Senior Warden, Bob Love and Junior Warden Sharon Long will be in the parish office during the hours posted below. This is an opportunity for everyone to visit with the wardens, share your concerns with them or discuss any issues that might exist. Thursday, April 18th from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm Wednesday, May 1st from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm Thursday, May 2nd from 8:30 am to 10:30 am Prayer Vigil in the Chapel following the Maundy Thursday Liturgy. This vigil is an opportunity for parishioners to spend an hour or two in quiet meditation and prayer in the Chapel. It begins after the Liturgy for Maundy Thursday on April 18 at 8:00 pm and ends at 11:00 am on Good Friday, April 19. Sign up sheets are on the Ministry Center in the Narthex or call the parish office at to reserve your hour of prayer.

14 GOOD FRIDAY PRAYER AROUND THE CROSS IN THE SPIRIT OF TAIZÉ April 19, 7:00 Trinity Church Silence, Prayer, Chants, Scripture, Community. Please use the Easter Flower Envelope found in the pew to help defray the cost of the palms and the flowers used to adorn Trinity for Easter. The suggested donation is $30. Flowers can be given in memory of a loved one or in thanksgiving for blessings. Donations may also be made on line. Go to and click on donations. Rector's Daily Audio Diary - Every day during the Lenten Season, Gary Manning is offering a brief meditation on some aspect of the Gospel reading assigned for the day. The link to these daily audio meditations are posted on Gary's blog ( his Twitter account and on the Trinity Church Facebook page. These daily reflections will continue until Easter Day, April 21. Outreach Totals - Thank you to all who participated in our Lenten Collection. It was a huge success. There was a great number of art supplies donated to St. Augustine Prep. A large number of tools that will be resold and earn money for Habitat. We also collected $1000 in donations from the wood studs that will be donated to Habitat's Faith Build project. (Faith Build is a partnership with Thrivent and local Churches to raise funds and walls for much needed housing). Thank you from the Outreach Committee. Be sure to on Facebook! 16 Helping the Hungry Friday May 10, at 6:30 pm, here at Trinity, we will make bagged lunches for the "The Gathering". (The Mission of the Gathering is to provide meals to those who would otherwise go hungry.) We are usually done in just under an hour, while we talk, joke and make sandwiches. All ages are invited to come and help. Please "Gather" all of your favorite recipes for A TASTE OF TRINITY COOKBOOK! You can drop your recipes in the basket with the black and white checked ribbon located at the Welcome Center outside the parish library or them to either Sandi Long at sandralong@aol.com or Jill Paradowski at jill.paradowski@gmail.com.
