Eucharistic Adoration Schedule Friday 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. First Sunday of the month 12 Noon to 8 p.m. Third Sunday of the month 12 Noon to 5 p.m. SCRIPTURE HIGHLIGHTS To love as God "commands" and Jesus teaches requires a spirit of humility that realizes that we are all sons and daughters of God who are called to use whatever gifts we possess regardless of how small or insignificant they may seem for the building of his kingdom. There is no greater sacrifice of praise we can make to God for his many blessings to us, no greater song of thanks we can offer than to honor God in those who have been created in God's image. To love as God loves demands every fiber of our being our heart, our soul, our mind, our strength. The love of God forces us outside our comfort zone, to put our own feelings and wants on the line, to risk being hurt or misunderstood for the sake of the beloved. In creating us, God invites us to participate in the work of creation by embracing God's spirit of love. In today's gospel, Jesus lifts up such love as the center of the kingdom of God. Devotion to God is not genuine unless it includes love for neighbor; commitment to others is incomplete without recognition of God as the Source of all love. It is in the compassion and kindness extended to others that our humanity most resembles God; it is in the respect and honor in which we hold others that we most praise the God of love; it is in acts of charity and selflessness that we mirror the love of God in our midst. In the twofold "Great Commandment" we discover a purpose to our lives much greater and larger than ourselves and our own needs, interests, prejudices, and biases. In loving God in one another, we find the ultimate meaning and purpose of the gifts of faith and life. Thank you and God bless you. RCIA What is the RCIA Rite of Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens and the Rite of Welcoming? The Rite of Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens is for inquirers in the RCIA process who are preparing for their Baptism. The Rite of Welcoming is for inquirers who have been previously baptized and are ready to publicly declare their intention to continue their journey toward full communion with the Catholic Church. All the inquirers presented are now ready to publicly declare their intention to continue their journey towards becoming Catholics. At this Rite, they are asked to more fully embrace the Gospel message with the help of God, and are also signed with the Cross to show that they now belong to Christ, the Shepherd of souls. In this Rite, the parish community has the opportunity to more fully participate in and pray for those in the RCIA process. On Sunday, November 18 at the 9 a.m. Mass, some of the inquirers who are considering joining the Catholic Church are going through the Rites of Acceptance and Welcoming. A small reception will be held in the Small Hall immediately after Mass. Please be aware that this special Rite will extend the Mass by about 15 minutes. NOTICE SPANISH MASS TIME CHANGE Beginning February 2019 the Spanish Mass time will change to Sunday at 1 p.m. This will change the time of Eucharistic Adoration on the First and Third Sundays of each month to 2 p.m.

"Surviving the Holidays" is a warm, encouraging and helpful event on Thursday, November 8, from 6:30-9 p.m. in the library of Ss. Peter and Paul Parish in Rocklin. The evening features a video and group discussion facilitated by people who personally understand what it takes to get through the holidays. You will hear from others who are dealing with a marital breakup and helpful tips that work on getting through this difficult time with support from your church community. Sunday Collection 10/28/18: $8, Disaster Emergency Fund: $2,686 Upcoming 2nd Collection: 11/11/18 Mount St. Mary School BREAKING OPEN THE WORD Introduction to This Weekend s Readings 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading: Deuteronomy 6:2-6 This is Moses' first articulation of the Shema prayer, a prayer that serves as a beautiful summary of the law of Israel's covenant with God. Second Reading: Hebrews 7:23-28 The sinless Christ's sacrifice is portrayed as the perfect and complete offering, reconciling God and humanity for all time. Because he lives on in his resurrection, Christ continues as our High Priest, interceding for us before the Father. Whoever loves me will keep my word, says the Lord; and my Father will love him and we will come to him. Gospel Reading: Mark 12:28b-34 Jesus "synthesizes" his entire Mosaic law into the one "Great Commandment." The Jews knew these two commandments well. To this day, observant Jews twice daily pray the Shema: to love God "with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength." The word shema means "hear," from the first words of the prayer, "Hear, O Israel..." The text for the Shema, which is also inscribed in the mezuzah, the small container affixed to the door of every observant Jewish home, is found in Deuteronomy 6:4-6. The book of Leviticus outlined in great detail a Jew's ethical and moral responsibility to "love" one's neighbor. But Jesus is the first to weave these two ideas into a single commandment: "There is no other commandment greater than these." The only way we can adequately express our love for God is in the love we extend to our neighbor; to do so is the beginning of the kingdom of God. Hear our prayer, O Lord, for all our brothers and sisters. Instill in us your Spirit of love to imitate the selfless humility of your Son so that we may realize your kingdom of compassion and peace in our own time and place. Amen. ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE Nevada Union Adult Education offers free classes and resources for English as a Second Language (ESL), preparation for GED (General Education Degree) and High School Diploma completion. 5 PARISH BOOK CLUB GATHERING All parishioners are invited to a meeting of the St. Patrick and St. Canice Book Club on Tuesday, November 27, 2018, at 6:30 p.m. (NEW TIME) in the Angel s Nest. The Angel s Nest is located at the back of St. Patrick s Church and can be reached by walking along the outside right wall of the Church. The meeting will last about an hour and a half. We will be discussing Mary, Who She is and Why She Matters by Robert Stackpole, STD. The book is available on line or through your favorite book store. The discussion will be led by Michael Moreland. In addition to stimulating conversation, coffee, tea and cookies will be provided. Two criminals were crucified with Christ. One was saved; do not despair. One was not; do not presume. In this coming Liturgical Year during which the Gospel of St. Luke is proclaimed, we journey with Jesus as He goes up to Jerusalem. Don't miss out on this wonderful experience of spiritual and physical renewal. Starting on Friday evening, the retreat lasts until Sunday morning, and it includes time for reflection and prayer, delicious meals, sacramental opportunities, enlightening talks, and a private room and bath. STEWARDSHIP CORNER Stewardship is a way of life, one that finds us giving of our time, talent, and treasure because of God and the relationship we have with Him. Stewardship is an important part of our spiritual lives. God stewards give because they want to give, not because they have to give. They are grateful for the gifts that God has given them and want to share. Many ask what portion of time, talent and treasure they should give. When we think about how blessed we are, it is easy to use our gifts of time, talent, and treasure to benefit one another. When it comes to time, we can consider any number of things. We can devote more time to prayer, individually or as a family, and/or to charitable activities. We can consider joining one or more of our 50+ parish ministries or any number of local community organizations that help others. In our community, there are many individuals who are in need of our time in the form of visits, rides and meals. It is also important for us to teach our children about stewardship. They learn from us by our example. When they are young, we teach them about Jesus, how to pray, and how to love one another. We can also teach them to give of themselves, especially their time and talents. Again, let us each take some time to reflect on our roles as good stewards. SPONSOR A FAMILY AT INTERFAITH FOOD MINISTRY IFM needs your help in making the holidays brighter for those in need. The holiday season should be the most wonderful time of the year. However, for those struggling with food insecurity it is the most challenging time of the year. Approximately 3,400 low income families receive groceries from IFM on a regular basis. Without the Holiday Food Distribution Program most would go without Thanksgiving or Christmas meals. $20 provides groceries for a full meal, including turkey and stuffing. $40 provides both Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. Checks can be made payable to IFM, 440 Henderson Street, Grass Valley, CA or donations can be made at IFM also has holiday gift cards available so you can give the gift of "Sponsoring a Family" to a family member or friend. No one should know the hurt of hunger during this season of giving. Thank you for your help in making the holidays brighter for those in need. HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR MASS? The gathering for Mass should begin long before the Entrance. As people ready themselves and their families in their homes for the Sunday Eucharist, they should be preparing for Mass. The Eucharist is "source and summit" of all we do, and it deserves attentive preparation. There is spiritual preparation that can be done as a family ahead of time, such as reviewing the Mass readings over a meal the day or days before the Mass.
