2 TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME! S P I R I T UA L R E A D I N G & R E F L E C T I O N NEXT SUNDAY S GOSPEL READING SAINT OF THE WEEK OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY OCTOBER 7 WE SHOULD MEDITATE ON THE MYSTERIES OF SALVATION LUKE 17:11-19 A s Jesus continued his journey to Jerusalem, he traveled through Samaria and Galilee. As he was entering a village, ten lepers met him. They stood at a distance from him and raised their voices, saying, "Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!" And when he saw them, he said, "Go show yourselves to the priests." As they were going they were cleansed. And one of them, realizing he had been healed, returned, glorifying God in a loud voice; and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. He was a Samaritan. Jesus said in reply, "Ten were cleansed, were they not? Where are the other nine? Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?" Then he said to him, "Stand up and go; your faith has saved you." The child to be born of you will be called holy, the Son of God, the fountain of wisdom, the Word of the Father on high. Through you, blessed Virgin, this Word will become flesh, so that even though, as he says: I am in the Father and the Father is in me, it is still true for him to say: I came forth from God and am here. In the beginning was the Word. The spring was gushing forth, yet still within himself. Indeed, the Word was with God, truly dwelling in inaccessible light. And the Lord said from the beginning: I think thoughts of peace and not of affliction. Yet your thought was locked within you, and whatever you thought, we did not know; for who knew the mind of the Lord, or who was his counsellor? And so the idea of peace came down to do the work of peace: The Word was made flesh and even now dwells among us. It is by faith that he dwells in our hearts, in our memory, our intellect and penetrates even into our imagination. What concept could man have of God if he did not first fashion an image of him in his heart? By nature incomprehensible and inaccessible, he was invisible and unthinkable, but now he wished to be understood, to be seen and thought of. But how, you ask, was this done? He lay in a manger and rested on a virgin s breast, preached on a mountain, and spent the night in prayer. He hung on a cross, grew pale in death, and roamed free among the dead and ruled over those in hell. He rose again on the third day, and showed the apostles the wounds of the nails, the signs of victory; and finally in their presence he ascended to the sanctuary of heaven. How can we not contemplate this story in truth, piety and holiness? Whatever of all this I consider, it is God I am considering; in all this he is my God. I have said it is wise to meditate on these truths, and I have thought it right to recall the abundant sweetness, given by the fruits of this priestly root; and Mary, drawing abundantly from heaven, has caused this sweetness to overflow for us. From The Office of Readings From a sermon by St. Bernard, abbot THAT IN ALL THINGS GOD MAY BE GLORIFIED! PAGE 2
3 ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC CHURCH! PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS If you or anyone you know is homebound or hospitalized, even temporarily, please call the office so that we may arrange for them to be visited by one of our Extraordinary Ministers. With your help we can make certain everyone is taken care of. Thank you! For sacramental emergencies, please call , ext. 6 WE ARE COLLECTING FOR THE COAR PEACE MISSION UNTIL OCTOBER 6 TH COAR, which stands for the Community Oscar Arnulfo Romero, is making a mission appeal and asking for your donations, prayers, and interest. If you would like to help and are writing a check, please make the check payable to: St. John Church, write Coar Peace Mission on the memo line, and drop it into the collection basket. If you have cash, please put it in an envelope marked COAR. The deadline is October 6 th. COAR is located in Zaragoza, El Salvador. It was founded in 1980 by a Cleveland Diocese Mission Team priest Fr. Ken Myers during El Salvador s brutal civil war. Fr. Ken and fellow Cleveland Mission Team members Sr. Dorothy Kazel, OSU, and Jean Donovan (murdered December 2, 1980) began gathering orphans from refugee camps and bringing them back to the Mission s parish of Zaragoza. COAR is now known as the Children s Village in El Salvador with 800 day students, 100 in foster care, a medical and dental clinic, pharmacy, trade shops (such as baking and tailoring). COAR s motto is Women and Men for God and Culture: the curriculum educates the entire person. With over 100 employees COAR strengthens the regional economy. One of the first orphans of COAR served as mayor of Zaragoza from COAR buzzes with optimism and vitality. However, El Salvador remains an impoverished country as are COAR s students. To protect the most vulnerable simply requires food, shelter, and housemothers. To educate the children to modernize their economy requires updated computers and new classrooms. To get the best teachers and treat them fairly requires wages near the Salvadoran national average. Please help us respond to the needs of the most impoverished among us and help them build a better future. OFFERTORY COLLECTION Budgeted Offertory $ 7,038 Sept. 26 th & 27 th 5,531 Deficit ($ 1,507) Then he said to the crowd, Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one s life does not consist of possessions. 4 TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME! PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS ST. JOHN S RESPECT LIFE CHAIN On Sunday, October 6th, from 2:00 to 3:00 pm, all are invited to join the second annual "Life Chain" on Trade Street here in Tryon. Though this is only the second year for the Pro-Life demonstration here in Tryon, this peaceful prayer vigil for life has been held in cities across the United States since Last year, there were "Life Chains" held in over 1500 cities in over 1700 locations. Participants will be praying silently next to the road while holding signs with phrases such as: "Adoption:The Loving Option," "Jesus Forgives and Heals," "Abortion Kills Children," and "Life - The First Inalienable Right." For more information about this event and its history, please visit Here in Tryon, like in any city, it is important for us to raise awareness regarding the rights of the defenseless, the voiceless, the most vulnerable in our midst. This event is not intended to be a harsh condemnation, but a call to witness to the sanctity of life from conception to natural death. Please consider joining us for that one hour on October 6th as we pray for an end to abortion. Fr. John Eckert ATTENTION: WOMEN OF THE PARISH Our parish is blessed to have so many parishioners who volunteer their time and talents to serve regularly in various educational, office and liturgical roles. St John s is equally blessed by the gentlemen and ladies who are responsible for various behind the scenes elements of our parish life sanctuary care and maintenance, landscaping, vestments, renovations, altar linens, flowers, candles and general keeping. We are asking YOU, all ladies of the parish, to prayerfully consider if you have one to two hours on Monday morning (9:30 to 11:00) to help our Merry Marthas as they spruce and clean our sanctuary including votives, candles, holy water fonts, etc. It s a wonderfully quiet time spent in the church in service to the Church! If interested, please contact Theresa in the parish office or at stjohnff@windstream.net. I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot; together we can do great things." 6 TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME! PARISH / DIOCESE / OTHER PRO LIFE Pope Francis challenges us to be protectors of all creation, to be stewards of all God's gifts. We begin to exercise this responsibility when we defend human life -- especially the unborn and the vulnerable. When we affirm the sacredness of all human life, we acknowledge God's plan for each human being, and we work to defend the gift of life from every form of abuse. Similarly, when we affirm that everything God made is good and worthy of our reverence and respect, we look differently on all God's creation. ~ Archbishop Robert J. Carlson, Archbishop of St. Louis, WORLDWIDE MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER St. Paul tells us that God gives us the strength to carry out the plan he put in us to spread the gospel. Allow God to transform your marriage so that it can shine in the love of God; it may be the only gospel that some people ever hear! The next Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekends are Nov. 1-3 in Atlantic Beach, NC and Feb. 7-9, in Asheville, NC. Early registration is highly recommended. For more information visit our website at: NCMarriageDiscovery.org or contact William & Elizabeth Nickles at applications@ncmarriagediscovery.org or POPE JOHN PAUL II S PRAYER FOR LIFE O Mary, bright dawn of the new world, Mother of the living, to you do we entrust the cause of life. Look down, O Mother upon the vast numbers of babies not allowed to be born, of the poor whose lives are made difficult, of men and women who are victims of brutal violence, of the elderly and the sick killed by indifference or out of misguided mercy. Grant that all who believe in Your Son may proclaim the Gospel of life with honesty and love to the people of our time. Obtain for them the grace to accept that Gospel as a gift ever new, the joy of celebrating it with gratitude throughout their lives and the courage to bear witness to it resolutely, in order to build, together with all people of good will, the civilization of truth and love, to the praise and glory of God, the Creator and lover of life. October is the month dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary and is also Pro Life month. Please remember the unborn in your prayers and join us in saying the rosary before each weekend Mass.
