2 TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME! SPIRITUAL READING & REFLECTION NEXT SUNDAY S GOSPEL READING SAINT OF THE WEEK FRANCIS OF ASSISI, OCTOBER 4 WE MUST BE SIMPLE, HUMBLE AND PURE LUKE 17:5-10 T he apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith." The Lord replied, "If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea, and it would obey you. "Who among you would say to your servant who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, 'Come here immediately and take your place at table'? Would he not rather say to him, 'Prepare something for me to eat. Put on your apron and wait on me while I eat and drink. You may eat and drink when I am finished'? Is he grateful to that servant because he did what was commanded? So should it be with you. When you have done all you have been commanded, say, 'We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.'" It was through his archangel, Saint Gabriel, that the Father above made known to the holy and glorious Virgin Mary that the worthy, holy and glorious Word of the Father would come from heaven and take from her womb the real flesh of our human frailty. Though he was wealthy beyond reckoning, he still willingly chose to be poor with his blessed mother. And shortly before his passion he celebrated the Passover with his disciples. Then he prayed to his Father saying: Father, if it be possible, let this cup be taken from me. Nevertheless, he reposed his will in the will of his Father. The Father willed that his blessed and glorious son, whom he gave to us and who was born for us, should through his own blood offer himself as a sacrificial victim on the cross. This was to be done not for himself through whom all things were made, but for our sins. It was intended to leave us an example of how to follow in his footsteps. And he desires all of us to be saved through him, and to receive him with pure heart and chaste body. O how happy and blessed are those who love the Lord and do as the Lord himself said in the gospel: You shall love the Lord your God with your whole heart and your whole soul, and your neighbor as yourself. Therefore, let us love God and adore him with pure heart and mind. This is his particular desire when he says: True worshipers adore the Father in spirit and truth. For all who adore him must do so in the spirit of truth. Let us also direct to him our praises and prayers saying: Our Father, who art in heaven, since we must always pray and never grow slack. Furthermore, let us produce worthy fruits of penance. Let us also love our neighbors as ourselves. Let us have charity and humility. Let us give alms because these cleanse our souls from the stains of sin. Men lose all the material things they leave behind them in this world, but they carry with them the reward of their charity and the alms they give. For these they will receive from the Lord the reward and recompense they deserve. We must not be wise and prudent according to the flesh. Rather we must be simple, humble and pure. We should never desire to be over others. Instead, we ought to be servants who are submissive to every human being for God s sake. The Spirit of the Lord will rest on all who live in this way and persevere in it to the end. He will permanently dwell in them. They will be the Father s children who do his work. They are the spouses, brothers and mothers of our Lord Jesus Christ. 3 ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC CHURCH! PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS If you or anyone you know is homebound or hospitalized, even temporarily, please call the office so that we may arrange for them to be visited by one of our Extraordinary Ministers. With your help we can make certain everyone is taken care of. Thank you! For sacramental emergencies, please call , ext. 6 WE ARE COLLECTING FOR THE COAR PEACE MISSION UNTIL OCTOBER 6 TH COAR, which stands for the Community Oscar Arnulfo Romero, is making a mission appeal and asking for your donations, prayers, and interest. If you would like to help and are writing a check, please make the check payable to: St. John Church, write Coar Peace Mission on the memo line, and drop it into the collection basket. If you have cash, please put it in an envelope marked COAR. Of course you may always mail it to, or bring into the parish office. The deadline is October 6 th. COAR is located in Zaragoza, El Salvador. It was founded in 1980 by a Cleveland Diocese Mission Team priest Fr. Ken Myers during El Salvador s brutal civil war. Fr. Ken and fellow Cleveland Mission Team members Sr. Dorothy Kazel, OSU, and Jean Donovan (murdered December 2, 1980) began gathering orphans from refugee camps and bringing them back to the Mission s parish of Zaragoza. COAR is now known as the Children s Village in El Salvador with 800 day students, 100 in foster care, a medical and dental clinic, pharmacy, trade shops (such as baking and tailoring). COAR s motto is Women and Men for God and Culture: the curriculum educates the entire person. With over 100 employees COAR strengthens the regional economy. One of the first orphans of COAR served as mayor of Zaragoza from COAR buzzes with optimism and vitality. However, El Salvador remains an impoverished country as are COAR s students. To protect the most vulnerable simply requires food, shelter, and housemothers. To educate the children to modernize their economy requires updated computers and new classrooms. To get the best teachers and treat them fairly requires wages near the Salvadoran national average. Please help us respond to the needs of the most impoverished among us and help them build a better future. 6 TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME! PARISH / DIOCESE / OTHER PRO LIFE Our efforts to heal the wounds of society will depend on our capacity to love and to be faithful to our mission. The Holy Father is showing us very clearly that our struggle is not just a political battle or a legal problem, but that we must evangelize and humanize the culture, then the world will be safe for the unborn, the elderly and the unproductive. The Gospel of Life is a Gospel of mercy. If we are going to get a hearing in today s world, it will be because people recognize that authenticity of our lives and our dedication to building a civilization of love. We are called to live our lives as a service to others and commit our lives to give witness to the presence of God s love and mercy in our midst. ~ Seán Cardinal O'Malley, O.F.M. Cap., Archbishop of Boston and Chairman of the USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activities, The New Evangelization in the Pontificate of Pope Francis August 6, 2013 POPE JOHN PAUL II S PRAYER FOR LIFE O Mary, bright dawn of the new world, Mother of the living, to you do we entrust the cause of life. Look down, O Mother upon the vast numbers of babies not allowed to be born, of the poor whose lives are made difficult, of men and women who are victims of brutal violence, of the elderly and the sick killed by indifference or out of misguided mercy. Grant that all who believe in Your Son may proclaim the Gospel of life with honesty and love to the people of our time. Obtain for them the grace to accept that Gospel as a gift ever new, the joy of celebrating it with gratitude throughout their lives and the courage to bear witness to it resolutely, in order to build, together with all people of good will, the civilization of truth and love, to the praise and glory of God, the Creator and lover of life. October is the month dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary and is also Pro Life month. Please remember the unborn in your prayers and join us in saying the rosary before each weekend Mass.
