2 THE COMMEMORATION OF ALL THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED! SPIRITUAL READING & REFLECTION Dear Parishioners, This week we begin the month of November, which is dedicated to our prayers for the souls in purgatory. We refer to them as the Poor Souls or All Souls. It is a great act of charity to pray for another person, living or dead. It is a commitment of our time and our desire that every soul be able to live in communion with the Holy Trinity and all those who are the Church. Each of us born again of water and the Holy Spirit are members of the family of the Church, God s family. He truly has adopted us and wants to share His nature (grace) with us for all eternity. He wants us to have total happiness; this comes from freedom from sin and engagement in a personal, intentional friendship with God through His Church. We are united as the Communion of the Saints: the Church Triumphant (those living in Heaven in eternal beatitude); the Church Suffering (those in purgatory awaiting the glory of Heaven); and the Church Militant (the living soldiers of Christ striving to live the Christian life in this world looking forward to the glory of Heaven). To live the Christian life fully, it is necessary to stay in the state of grace. If grace is lost after Baptism by our sin, our Blessed Lord reaches out to us through His Sacrament of Penance (Confession) and restores us to sanctifying grace. How good our Lord is to us. Our daily examination of conscience and the regular and frequent sacred pilgrimage we make into the confessional is a statement of trust in God s spiritual direction. This is our Christian way of coming to know ourselves, to take responsibility for our actions and to receive reconciliation with the One Who loves us most. It is in the confessional that we grow in selfknowledge and are able to acknowledge who we are and accept God s call to holiness. Christian maturity develops in this manner because it is growth in God s presence. It is in maturity that we become free and can truly love. To help us in this month of spiritual maturity, the Church calls us to meditate on the end of life and our participation in eternal life with our brothers and sisters. Yesterday, November 1, was All Saints Day, a day to celebrate the accomplishment of our brothers and sisters who have entered the glory of Heaven. It was a Holy Day, of course, but this year in the United States there was not an obligation to assist at Holy Mass. Today, November 2, is the Commemoration of All Souls. We pray for the Souls of our brothers and sisters in purgatory, the temporary state of temporal punishment due to confessed sins, the guilt of which has been forgiven by absolution. We can assist the Souls by our prayers and good works; this is a great act of charity for those we know and for those who may have no one praying for them. There are many ways, as you know, to gain indulgences for those in purgatory. Here are two specific for November: 1. Today, November 2 is All Souls Day. A plenary indulgence is granted to the souls in purgatory for a person to visit a church or oratory on All Souls Day and pray the Our Father and Creed with the usual conditions. 2. From November 1 through November 8, a plenary indulgence is granted to the souls in purgatory for a person to visit a cemetery and pray, if only mentally, for the dead with the usual conditions. From the Catechism of the Catholic Church: 1471 The doctrine and practice of indulgences in the Church are closely linked to the effects of the sacrament of Penance. What is an indulgence? An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints. An indulgence is partial or plenary according as it removes either part or all of the temporal punishment due to sin. The faithful can gain indulgences for themselves or apply them to the dead. What is necessary to be duly disposed? 1. Have the intention of gaining a plenary indulgence 2. Have a disposition of mind and heart in which all attachment to sin, even venial sin, is absent. Saying an Act of Contrition would suffice for this. What are the conditions (requirements) for gaining a plenary indulgence? 1. Perform the indulgenced work (in the time stipulated and the manner prescribed) 2. Fulfill these three conditions within several days before or after performing the indulgenced work: a. Sacramental confession (one Confession suffices for several days of indulgenced works) b. Eucharistic Communion (one for each work; more fitting on day of the work) c. Prayer for Pope s intentions (Our Father, Hail Mary suffices; more fitting on day of the work). May our Lord bless you and our Lady keep you in her care. With my prayers, Father Arnsparger THAT IN ALL THINGS GOD MAY BE GLORIFIED! PAGE 2

Each session will meet in the church from 6:30pm to 7:30pm. The first session will review the primary responsibilities of the Mass on Wednesdays and the second session will focus on the Sunday Mass. General instruction will be reviewed as well as particulars for each Mass. Any questions, please contact Theresa Fitch in the parish office. Thank you. The altar server occupies a privileged place in the liturgical celebration. He who serves at Mass, presents himself to a community. He experiences firsthand that Jesus Christ is present and active in every liturgical act. Jesus is present when the community comes together to pray and render praise to God. Jesus is present in the Word of sacred Scripture. Jesus is present above all in the Eucharist under the signs of bread and wine. He acts through the priest who, in the person of Christ, celebrates the holy Mass and administers the sacraments. Saint Pope John Paul II, 2001 UT IN OMNIBUS GLORIFICETUR DEUS! PAGE 3

We look forward to hearing from all of you. Palma Davis: riverhillfarmpmd@gmail.com Send recipes for sharing to Theresa Fitch: stjohnff@windstream.net HELLO PARISH VOLUNTEERS! We appreciate all you do for our parish. We have a Protecting God s Children Training Class upcoming here at St. John s for those who have not yet attended, are new to the parish and, or are new to volunteering with the parish. Protecting God s Children training is a Safe Environment requirement for volunteers within the Diocese of Charlotte and with St. John the Baptist Church. Have you preregistered online for Protecting God s Children? Why not sign up today? Go to Virtusonline.org and register! Protecting God s Children Awareness Training Workshop Tuesday, November 11, 2014 St. John the Baptist, Parish Social Hall 6:00pm to 9:00pm Pre-registration is required on-line C HURCH S AFETY For several years we have left the Church unlocked so that people could make visits to the Blessed Sacrament at anytime, day or night. Unfortunately, this has become a safety risk for people visiting and for the church itself. Additionally, someone has been leaving trash, matches, and other items in the church. HVAC controls, sound system levels and lights have been adjusted and so the church is compromised. For all these reasons we will be locking the church at 5:00pm each evening or after scheduled services. If your group has a meeting in the social hall please be sure the church is locked while you are in the hall. Thank you for your help with this safety concern. A very special thanks to Patty Skadow for facilitating the sessions and for her exceptional insights and teaching! Women s Group will take a short break; however, we will resume November 18 th to revisit The Eucharist Fr. Robert Barron s compelling commentary on the Eucharist as Sacred Meal, Sacrifice and Real Presence. We are revisiting this three-part series so that we may explore more deeply with reflection and discussions. We invite all ladies of the parish to join us. We cannot adequately understand any aspect of the Church's life until we see its intimate connection with Christ in the Eucharist. Fr. Richard John Neuhaus! Attention Mothers: A Mothers Conference Mothers are invited to spend a day being renewed and refreshed in their vocation at "God Equips the Called," a conference for mothers featuring "Catholic Digest" editor Danielle Bean. Modesty protects the intimate center of the person. It means refusing to unveil what should remain hidden. It is ordered to chastity to whose sensitivity it bears witness. It guides how one looks at others and behaves toward them in conformity with the dignity of persons and their solidarity.
