2 THE EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS! SPIRITUAL READING & REFLECTION Dear Parishioners, Today we celebrate the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. It is a Feast which has its roots of course in the Crucifixion of our Lord as He was lifted before the entire world and all history as the Savior of each soul. Moses lifted up the bronze serpent on the pole in the desert and the people were healed of the guilt of their sins. Our Blessed Lord is lifted up at Calvary and every soul has the opportunity to be healed of the guilt of sin. To the degree that we have prepared for entering into the mystery of the saving act of the crucifixion of the Lord (by frequent Confession and regular and devout prayer) we can experience the healing effect of His sacrifice we gain the merits gained through the Cross of Jesus. We enter this mystery of course at the Holy Mass; it is here that we meet the redeeming action of God Who is Merciful and loving while demanding of us a response to His call for us to the perfection of charity. There is no mediocrity in Christianity because there is no mediocrity in the Sacrifice which is at its center. Today s Feast commemorates the finding of the relics of the Cross in Jerusalem, by St. Helen (18 August 330 A.D.) Because the Romans had covered Calvary with a pagan temple to stop Christians from coming on pilgrimage to the place of the crucifixion, the place of the crucifixion was protected actually. So when St. Helen had the archeological work done, she found relics of the True Cross of Jesus. Several miracles were attested to as a result of people coming into contact with the relics. Today s Feast is also a celebration of the dedication in 335 A.D. of the buildings erected by Constantine, St. Helena s son and the Roman Emperor: 1. A Domed Church (the Anastasis) over the empty grave of Jesus, 2. A basilica (the Martyrium), 3. A shrine (a Calvarium) marking the place of the Crucifixion of the Lord. These buildings were destroyed by the Persians in 614 A.D. and then rebuilt. The present Church of the Holy Sepulcher, which includes the three above mentioned places and so encompasses a Catholic Altar at the place of the Nailing of Jesus to the Cross; an Orthodox Altar where Jesus was Crucified, a slab of stone at the place where Jesus body was prepared for burial, and the tomb where Jesus was buried. So, all of this is now in one building which was built by the crusaders in 1149 A.D. Each day s saint or feast day helps us in our spiritual growth. It is a good practice to read about the saint of the day personally and if you have any children, with them. The account of Our Lady of Sorrows, Sts. Cornelius (Martyred Pope) and Cyprian (Martyred Bishop), St. Robert Bellarmine (the Jesuit who helped with Galileo), St. Januarius (the relic of his blood is in the Cathedral of Naples), and SS. Andrew Kim & Companions (Korean martyrs) all help us to study the virtue and witness of good Catholics in union with our Lord and His Church. Let the account of the fervor of their faith enliven yours, learn from them and then ask: What does God want of me today? Last Sunday our second collection was for the Priest Retirement. I pray that we will have 100% participation in this important collection to help all the priests of the Diocese. Please be as generous as possible. Thanks for your appreciation of the needs of our retired priests. The Diocesan Eucharistic Congress will be this Friday and the last minute details are being finalized. I hope many of you will be attending. Friday night, September 19 is especially significant, as we will have a visit to our Diocese by one of the Cardinals of the Church: Edwin F. O Brien. Cardinal O Brien is the Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. He is the former Archbishop of the Archdiocese for Military Services. He is the Archbishop emeritus of the Archdiocese of Baltimore. This is a great honor for Charlotte. Come on Friday night to the Sacred Music Concert and then hear Cardinal O Brien. Saturday, September 20 will be the Outdoor Eucharistic Procession, the programs for all ages during the day and the Closing Mass of the Congress at 4:15 PM. All of this is at the Charlotte Convention Center on College Street behind St. Peter s Catholic Church. I hope to see you there. REMEMBER THAT THERE WILL NOT BE CONFESSIONS OR THE VIGIL MASS NEXT SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 20. Thank you again for all your good work for our Lord and His Church. God bless you and may our Lady keep you in her tender care. Father Arnsparger THAT IN ALL THINGS GOD MAY BE GLORIFIED! PAGE 2

4 THE EXALTATIN OF THE HOLY CROSS! PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS A DULT F AITH F ORMATION WOMEN S GROUP Conversion Following the Call of Christ Tuesday Evening at 6:30pm We thank those ladies who joined us for the first Conversion Session: Bartimaeus. We had a delightful as well as insightful evening as we began the Conversion series! All ladies are invited to join the Women s Group as we gather together this Tuesday evening, September 16 th at 6:30pm. We will hear the conversion story of The Rich Young Man! In Jesus answers to the young man s questions (and also in his invitation), we will come to an understanding of what true freedom is and where it is found. "Few souls understand what God would accomplish in them if they were to abandon themselves unreservedly to Him and if they were to allow His grace to mold them accordingly." St. Ignatius of Loyola MEN S GROUP RESUMES St. John the Baptist men s group presents a weekly study on the Holy Eucharist on Thursdays at 7:00pm in the Social Hall. We first meet in the Church for 15 minutes of prayer followed by the study of the Eucharist. The presentation is based upon Fr. Barron s DVD on the Eucharist as a Sacred Meal, a Sacrifice, and a Real Presence. Please attend and find out why Fr. Barron says, the Eucharist is not a luxury, but a necessity, for without it, we would, in a spiritual sense, starve to death. Or as the Catechism states, the Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life and the sum and summary of our faith. For more information contact Greg Lobas at or Bob Then at PRIESTS RETIREMENT AND BENEFITS Our parish received $5,786 in contributions to the Priests Retirement and Benefits Collection last week. We are grateful for the generosity of our parishioners. Our assessment is $13,093. Those who were unable to give last week may still put a contribution in the regular collection any time. There are additional envelopes available in the parish office for those who did not receive one in the mail. MODESTY Modesty is one of the Twelve Fruits of the Holy Spirit, which are perfections that the Holy Spirit forms in us as the first fruits of eternal glory: charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control, chastity. Modesty is dress and behavior pertains to both genders. May we each strive to be a virtuous example of modesty for others to emulate. To say that "...modesty is a matter of custom" is just as wrong as to say that, "...honesty is a matter of custom." 6 THE EXALTATIN OF THE HOLY CROSS! PARISH / DIOCESE / OTHER REPORTING MINISTRY-RELATED ABUSE OF A MINOR All cases of alleged, known or suspected ministry related sexual abuse of a minor must be reported to the proper civil authority. Any person having actual knowledge of, or reasonable cause to suspect an incident of ministry related sexual abuse by any church personnel of the Diocese of Charlotte is to immediately report the incident to the Chancery, unless to do so would violate the Sacrament of Penance. The Chancery will then report the incident to the proper civil authority. After notifying the proper civil authority, the Chancery will immediately notify the Assistance Coordinator, the Promoter of Justice, and the Review Board. Following this, the individual reporting the incident to the Chancery will be notified of the particulars regarding the filing of the incident with civil authority. This reporting requirement is not intended to supersede the right of a victim or witness to individually make a report to public authorities, but is to ensure proper, complete and timely reporting to the proper civil authority. At the time of reporting, the diocese will request to be kept informed as to the progress of that authority s investigation. Should an individual choose to make a report to civil authorities, the requirement to make a report to the Chancery is not removed. You may make a report of sexual misconduct by calling the Chancery at , or by writing to: Chancellor Diocese of Charlotte PO Box Charlotte, NC At the time of reporting an incident alleged sexual misconduct to the Chancery, the person making the report will be asked to complete the diocesan form, Report of Suspected Ministry Related Sexual Misconduct by Church Personnel. AMERICAN RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE Monday, September 15 th from 12:30-5:00pm New Location! First Baptist Church, 125 Pacolet St., Tryon Call for an appointment. CATHOLICS IN YOUR 20S AND 30S Asheville Theology on Tap will be holding its next event Monday, September 22nd at All Souls Pizza in Asheville starting at 6:30pm. Our speaker will be Fr. Pat Cahill of St. Eugene's talking about "Our Throwaway Culture" PRO LIFE If we understand the human person as the temple of the Holy Spirit the living house of God then these latter issues fall logically into place as the crossbeams and walls of that house. All direct attacks on innocent human life, such as abortion and euthanasia, strike at the house's foundation. These directly and immediately violate the human person's most fundamental right the right to life. Neglect of these issues is the equivalent of building our house on sand. Living the Gospel of Life: A Challenge to American Catholics (USCCB) Get ready for the Third Annual Knights of Columbus Wine Tasting and Silent Auction at Overlook Mountain Winery. In addition to a gourmet meal and a free glass of wine, this year one lucky ticket holder will win $500 cash. There are also many great silent auction items to bid on. The date of the event is Saturday, September 27 th at 6pm. Tickets will be on sale after Masses on September 13 & 14 and Sunday, September 21. SILENCE BEFORE MASS Silence can foster reverence and reflection. Before Mass begins, a time of silence is commendable in the church, the sacristy, and in adjacent areas so that all may be disposed to carry out the sacred actions in a devout and fitting manner. Sacred silence, as a part of the celebration, is also to be observed at the designated times: for example, after each invitation to pray, at the conclusion of each reading, after the homily, and after Communion. --From Liturgical Norms Of the Diocese of THAT IN ALL THINGS GOD MAY BE GLORIFIED PAGE 6
