2 Mission Appeal from COAR, a School and Orphanage in El Salvador COAR, (stands for the Community Oscar Arnulfo Romero) is our Mission Appeal this year. John Hannon will make an appeal asking for donations, prayers, and interest next weekend, June 17 & 18. COAR is located in Zaragoza, El Salvador. It was founded in 1980 by Fr. Ken Myers during El Salvador s brutal civil war. Fr. Ken and fellow Cleveland Mission Team members Sr. Dorothy Kazel, OSU, and Jean Donovan (murdered December 2, 1980) began gathering orphans from refugee camps and bringing them back to the Mission s parish of Zaragoza. COAR is now known as the Children s Village in El Salvador with 800 day students, 100 in foster care, a medical and dental clinic, pharmacy, trade shops (such as baking and tailoring). It is administered directly by the Archbishop of San Salvador through his Vicariate of Human Development. COAR s motto is Women and Men for God and Culture: the curriculum educates the entire person. With over 30 employees COAR strengthens the regional economy. One of the first orphans of COAR served as mayor of Zaragoza from COAR buzzes with optimism and vitality. However, El Salvador remains an impoverished country as are COAR s students. To protect the most vulnerable simply requires food, shelter, and housemothers. To educate the children to modernize their economy requires updated computers and new classrooms. To get the best teachers and treat them fairly requires wages near the Salvadoran national average. Please help us respond to the needs of the most impoverished among us and help them build a better future. COAR Peace Mission strives to be the tangible and real expression of the Gospel to promote justice, community and peace in El Salvador through the support of effective programs in health, education and welfare which assist children and others, not only to develop their full human potential but also to contribute to the betterment of the world in which they live. Our Diocesan Mission Appeal for 2017 is COAR. They need our help to be able to help the children of El Salvador. Please be generous in your offering and make all checks payable to St. Patrick Church. 3 THE INEXPRESSIBLE MYSTERY The God of the universe is mysterious. Science has not been able to solve the mystery of how the universe came into being or explain exactly what continues to give it creative energy and masterful design. No religion asserts that it has found words to name fully the ineffable mystery of God, for no matter what name we use, God always transcends our limited ability to understand. God is a mystery to be believed, not known. And yet, we Christians believe that our name for God best expresses that inexpressible mystery: God is the Most Holy Trinity of three persons united in a communion of love, pouring forth that creative, saving, sanctifying love into the world. If you aren t here for a couple of Sundays please be sure to include the offerings you missed and add them to your present offering. And you don t need to write out several checks. Just total the amount and write out one check. Think of your offering as your gift to God for all the blessings God showers upon you. God doesn t stop blessing you while you are on vacation. God would expect you to continue giving and thanking even while away. Yes, you would be expected to give an offering wherever you go to Mass while on vacation, but please don t forget to keep up your offering to your HOME PARISH. And, have a safe & blessed vacation!
