2 Magnificat August 2015 Vol. 17, No. 6 TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME! SPIRITUAL READING & REFLECTION Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. JOhn 6:68 TO WHOM SHALL WE GO? Jesus became sad because they did not believe, they did not yet believe that he had been sent by the Father. They had followed him because of what he said and did, not for who he was. For them, a discourse they could not understand was a reason to leave him, more decisive than who he was for them, more decisive than all the love that they had experienced in his presence. How could they not understand that his presence was the bread that nourished them and gave them the fullness of life, a life as the beloved children of the Father? Many of them left, forever. The Twelve stayed. They didn t dare move a muscle or speak a single word. There seemed to be a heavy silence emanating from the heart of the Lord and spreading around him like winter fog. Can there be any sadness greater than that of the rejection of a gift at the very moment when its full value is displayed? But although the people s ability to receive seemed to have been exhausted, the Lord s gift of love could never be. The suffering on his face betrayed a tranquil decision to make an offering of himself that could penetrate this rejection of him and express the folly of a love that wanted to save everyone. Gently but as if a boundary were near that could be crossed with a single word Jesus looked at the little group of confused Apostles. Will you also go away? Peter was surprised for a moment when he recognized in the Master s voice the same tone that he had heard one day from a boy with leprosy, asking them for alms from the side of a country road. An immense sadness took hold of him, and the only reply he could manage was a cry for help. His cry, too, was like that of a beggar: Lord, to whom shall we go? PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS CONGRATULATIONS TO ELLEN MURREY Recipient of the St. John the Baptist Scholarship Congratulations to Ellen Murrey, the recipient of the annual St. John the Baptist Scholarship ($1,000.00) for the academic year. Ellen, the daughter of Jennifer and Carlton Murrey, is a graduate of Canongate Catholic High School in Fletcher, North Carolina. Ellen will be attending Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, North Carolina major undecided at present. As a youth member of St. John Baptist, Ellen has served our parish through music ministry and music programs. CONGRATULATIONS TO LILY NELSON Recipient of the Knights of Columbus Council 9492 Rene Tanguay Memorial Scholarship Congratulations to Lily Nelson, the recipient of the Rene Tanguay Memorial Scholarship ($1,000.00) for the academic year. The Knights of Columbus recently funded this memorial scholarship to honor Rene, a recently deceased, long time parishioner and fellow Knight. Lily, the daughter of Diane and Brad Nelson, is a graduate of Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy in Mooresboro, North Carolina. Lily plans to major in Computer Science with a minor in Theology at the Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas. As a youth member of St. John Baptist, Lily has served our parish through music ministry as a cantor and as an assistant with the Faith Formation program. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process established by the universal Church for individuals to become Catholic and receive the sacraments of initiation Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist. This initiation process also involves a parish community experiencing a renewal in faith as it prepares and welcomes new members into the Church. The Rite speaks of conversion as a spiritual journey. Centered on fostering a deep relationship with Jesus and the Church he founded, this journey takes place through distinct stages over a period of time suitable to bring about a thorough catechesis, significant experience of the parish community, and commitment to the liturgical and moral life of the Catholic faithful. The Congress will include a Eucharistic procession through the streets of Uptown Charlotte. Families should plan on attending this important event, September 11 & 12, 2015 at the Charlotte Convention Center. Programs available for children, Youth, and Adults Hispanic tracks offered. St. Ambrose YOUTH GROUP Eucharistic Congress: I Am the Way, the Truth and the Life Family event: Youth, be the one to encourage your families to go: September th check out the video and the website: Congratulations to our recent high school graduates who are entering their first year of college: Mary King, Alivia Livesay, Ellen Murrey and Lily Nelson. ALL parents and youth of the parish are encouraged to attend as a family, our weekly Wednesday evening Mass and then stay for Adoration and Benediction. Bring your children and come before Our Lord, present Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in the Blessed Sacrament. The spiritual fruits will be overflowing when a family spends quiet time in silent prayer and joyful adoration of our Lord. Confessions are offered at 4:00pm prior to Mass at 5:15pm. If you would rather not drive to the Eucharistic Congress call Marylou Varnes at or Immaculate Conception in Hendersonville is taking two buses. First come, first serve. The bus leaves at 6:30am and cost is $20 per person. A Prayer for these soon to be college undergrads Father, teach our students to walk humbly with You At school by showing respect for their professors, compassion for their fellow students, and gratitude to You for the gift of their education. At work by accepting instruction graciously from superiors, encouraging coworkers and returning to You a portion of their wealth through giving. At home by being open to advice from parents and other mentors and expressing appreciation for the emotional and financial support they receive from their families. Help them realize that humility is not a sign of weakness but of strength - strength of character. It is a sign that they trust You with their lives and their futures. The annual Eucharistic Congress in the diocese of Charlotte is a gathering of thousands of Catholics from many parts of the Southeast who come together to celebrate our Lord s Real Presence in the Eucharist. The goal of the Congress is to promote a deeper love for the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, and help attendees gain an understanding of the social dimension of the Eucharist and how Jesus unifies us, fuels our faith, and how through Him, we put our faith into action in the world. This 2-day event, which takes place this year on September 11 & 12, is held at the Charlotte Convention Center in Downtown Charlotte and features engaging nationally-known speakers whose talks focus on the different dimensions of the Eucharist, a Holy Hour and Eucharistic Procession, Confession, Eucharistic Adoration, and Sacred Music. But at the heart of the event is the celebration of the Eucharist the Holy Mass which is celebrated by the Bishop, and concelebrated by the priests of our diocese. The Congress welcomes all ages, with sessions for adults, break-out groups for grades 1-12, college and young adults, and special cultural programs for our Hispanic and Vietnamese communities. Attendees become part of a spiritually unifying event which brings together the priests, deacons, seminarians, religious, and lay faithful of the diocese, all under our Bishop, and this event highlights the social dimension of the Eucharist, exposing children and teens what it means to live a Catholic culture, and how they can put their faith into practice.
