2 CORPUS CHRISTI! Solemnity of The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ Corpus Christi Second Sunday after Pentecost or Thursday after Trinity Sunday The High Feast of the Lamb (detail) Ghent altarpiece - Jan Van Eyck 16th c "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink His blood, you have no life in you; he who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day." John 6:53, 54 Dear Parishioners, Today is the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of our Lord: Corpus Christi. We celebrate this Feast to honor the Real Presence of the Risen, Glorified Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ. This miracle is the profound center of our Holy Catholic Faith. In every tabernacle in every Catholic Church Christ stays with us to comfort us, to feed us, to gather us in unity. On every Altar where a Catholic priest offers the Holy Mass, the true Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of the Risen, Glorified Jesus is made present for us to Adore and to receive. Here is a good web site for learning about the Real Presence of Jesus the Holy Eucharist: index.html After entering, you will see places where there is perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. On the right you can click on many topics; go to Eucharist. : From Conversations with God by Fr. Fernandez: When we spend time with the Blessed Sacrament we make an act of faith. It was faith in the real presence of Christ in the Holy Eucharist that led to devotion to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament outside of Mass as well. In the first centuries of the Church the Sacred Species were reserved so that Communion could be taken to the sick and to those who were in prison awaiting martyrdom because they had confessed their faith. As time went by, the faith and love of believers caused them to make both public and private devotion to the Holy Eucharist far richer. Their faith led them to treat the Body of Christ with the greatest possible reverence and this also led to greater public devotion. We can find many testimonies in the most ancient documents of the Church to the veneration by the early Christians which later was to make way for the feast we celebrate today... This Solemnity goes back to the thirteenth century. It was first established in the diocese of Liege, and Pope Urban IV instituted it in 1264 for the whole Church. (There had just been a Eucharistic Miracle at Bolsena and the blood stained corporal from a Mass was taken to the Pope staying in Orvieto. You can see the corporal today in the Cathedral of Orvieto.) The centre of the feast was to be, as Pope Urban IV described it, a popular devotion reflected in hymns and joy. In the same year Saint Thomas Aquinas, at the Pope s request, composed for this day two Offices which have nourished the piety of many Christians throughout the centuries. Catechism of the Catholic Church - The Eucharist The Eucharist is "source and summit of the Christian life." "The other sacraments, and indeed all ecclesiastical ministries and works of the apostolate, are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it. For in the blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual good of the Church, namely Christ himself, our Pasch." 1325 "The Eucharist is the efficacious sign and sublime cause of that communion in the divine life and that unity of the People of God by which the Church is kept in being. It is the culmination both of God's action sanctifying the world in Christ and of the worship men offer to Christ and through him to the Father in the Holy Spirit." 1326 Finally, by the Eucharistic Celebration we already unite ourselves with the heavenly liturgy and anticipate eternal life, when God will be all in all In brief, the Eucharist is the sum and summary of our faith: "Our way of thinking is attuned to the Eucharist, and the Eucharist in turn confirms our way of thinking." Friday is the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Remember the 12 Promises our Lord made to Saint Margaret Mary when He appeared to her at Paray La Monial. And Saturday is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Let us rejoice in the many graces our Lord is offering us in the Liturgy. Saturday is the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Several people have asked about carpooling or renting a bus to attend Dcn. Santiago Mariani s ordination to the Holy Priesthood. If someone would like to organize this please call the parish office. The ordination will be at St. Patrick s cathedral in Charlotte at 10:00 am on Saturday, June 27 th. In order to facilitate parking and a reception for the future Fr. Mariani s Mass of Thanksgiving here at St. John s on Sunday, July 5, we have moved the celebration to the 8:30am Mass. We will then have a reception at the Sunnydale Reception Hall at 328 South Trade Street. I hope you can join us for this celebration. May our Lady keep you in her care and our Lord grant you many graces. With my prayers, Fr. Arnsparger THAT IN ALL THINGS GOD MAY BE GLORIFIED! PAGE 2

REFLECTION FOR YOUR SUMMER PRAYER LIFE In this trying time that our country is going through we Catholics and especially we students, have a serious duty to fulfill: our self-formation. [...] We, who by the grace of God are Catholics... must steel ourselves for the battle we shall certainly have to fight to fulfill our program and give our country, in the not too distant future, happier days and a morally healthy society, but to achieve this we need constant prayer to obtain from God that grace without which all our efforts are useless; and finally, the sacrifice of our passion and of ourselves, because without that we cannot achieve our aim. June 2015 A Home for the Wounded Heart Many people, especially today, face painful situations resulting from poverty, disability, illness and addictions, unemployment, and the loneliness of advanced age. But divorce and same-sex attraction impact the life of the family in especially intimate ways. Christian families and networks of families should be sources of mercy, safety, friendship, and support for those struggling with these issues. In the words of Pope Francis: I invite all Christians, everywhere, at this very moment, to a renewed personal encounter with Jesus Christ, or at least an openness to letting him encounter them; I ask all of you to do this unfailingly each day. No one should think that this invitation is not meant for him or her, since no one is excluded from the joy brought by the Lord. 140 Love is Our Mission SECOND ANNUAL "SUMMER FEST" On Saturday, June 20 th, following the 4:30pm Mass, the Knights of Columbus will sponsor a dinner to benefit those with intellectual disabilities.
