THE SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY The Sacrament of Matrimony is celebrated for parishioners. The couple are to contact the priest at least six (6) months prior to the ceremony. THE SACRAMENT OF THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK AND MINISTRY TO THE SICK & ELDERLY The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament of healing., expressing love of God and our Church for the sick, our shut-ins and the elderly. For the SERIOUSLY ILL and dying, contact the Priory. Communion will be brought on Sundays to the home of any person permanently or temporarily homebound. 3 THE NATIVITY OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST BEING MOM AND DAD: This year, our parish offered something a little different for Mother s Day and Father s Day. We pray that these gifts may help you all to grow in prayer as individuals and as a family. Last weekend, some wonderful things happened. That Father s Day, we gave out rosary key rings to all of the dads and father figures in our parish. In addition to the fathers who took their gift, children also chose rosaries for their dads. Other people took them home to fathers, grandfathers, and other male father figures whom they would see and celebrate with later that day. Some took these gifts and gave them to their mothers instead. For these children, their mother plays the role of both mother and father, especially in their single parent families. Our Church takes seriously the responsibility for preserving the family, and to recognize and value the importance of the complementarily of men and women in their contributions to relationships, including marriage and family. We have the instinctual sense that men and women offer gifts to marriage and family that are respectively unique because of their gender. At the same time, the delimitation of these roles is not so simple, because good parenting calls on mothers and fathers to use all of the gifts that they are blessed with as human beings, regardless of gender, in order to foster and grow their families in holy, healthy and happy ways. In practical terms, this means that the laundry still needs to get done, the meals need to be cooked, and the house still needs cleaning. Repairs still need to be made on broken furniture, and the gutters need to be cleaned. And the bills still need to get paid. For one parent to leave the other to handle all of the responsibilities is egotistical and selfish. To not do these chores because it s woman s work or that s a man s job, when the need and urgency are clear, is also selfish. God designed the relationship of husband and wife in order that they should work as a team, collaborating together and making up for what is lacking in the other. Furthermore, in some families, there is only the one parent, and these parents have to meet the needs of their families and grow them, regardless of societal norms regarding gender roles. A single dad, for example, still has to raise his daughter according to her needs, just as a single mom has to tend to her son according to his. These are just as much families as those with both mother and father and these parents, too, share the vocation of parenthood. Yet these parents shoulder the responsibilities of being both father and mother. Most importantly, every parent, whether father or mother, has the duty of teaching their children how to grow in relationship with God, which they do through their loving behavior and instruction. Parents are the first teachers of the faith, the baptismal rite says. When mothers and fathers allow themselves to be reflections of God, who is like a mother ( Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I [God] will not forget you! Isaiah 49:15) and a father ( Call no one on earth your father; you have but one Father in heaven, (Matthew 23:9), they proclaim the good news of God s salvation to their children. In our parish, we have diverse expressions of family, and all of you share the same desire: to have families who love and treasure one another, and who know that you are loved by God and challenged to live lives in accordance with that love, by belonging to the greater family of the Church. We, you parish family, thank you, and pray for you all, that you may continue to grow as families, and as members of God s family.

We meet monthly, usually on the fourth Monday of the month, at Church of St Pius X, 91 Secor Rd, Scarsdale to honor our deceased spouses with a Mass at 7 PM in the small chapel off the main church, followed by a social meeting with refreshments. Our next meeting date is Monday, June 25th. We plan activities and have meals at local area restaurants. We welcome all Catholic Widows/ Widowers. We will meet again in September on the 24th. Both are available 24 hours per day. Transfiguration Seniors Club The Seniors Club will not meet during the summer. See you in September, Thursday 9/20. See our bulletin board for Fall Social dates and activities Sunday Missals for 2018/2019: Order your Sunday Missal for next year now. The deadline for ordering is July 15th. Order forms are in the foyer of the church. Cost is $3.50. Missals are helpful for the homebound and prayerful preparation for Sunday Mass, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Novena: Prayer cards for the novena will be available for pick up in the church foyer next weekend. The novena begins on the following Saturday and goes for nine days. The novena is facilitated by the Parish Twinning Committee which asks that you remember our twinned parish in El Salvador along with your own intentions. Vacation Bible School is almost here at Transfiguration! We have some schedule changes for our VBS: New Dates: July 9th through July 13th July 16th through July 20th We have added an extra week. Children ages 3 thru 12 are invited to join the fun. The fee is $60.00 per child (scholarships are available). Call Nancy Nelson at or nancyneson2380@gmail.com. We are in need of adult and teen volunteers. Confirmation 2019 students can fulfill their 15 hour community service requirement in a fun way before schoolwork and sports take precedence in September. Come join us for one week or two! A fun time is promised for all.

5 Summer Enrichment Program Transfiguration School will be offering a 6 week Summer Enrichment Program starting June 25, 2018 for children entering Prek3 2 nd. This program is a combination of sports (tennis, gymnastics, basketball and volleyball) arts and crafts, baking, and outdoor fun with a little academics on the side. More commonly, John is known as the precursor of our Lord Jesus Christ. All the Gospels report John s basic message: Repent, the kingdom is near at hand. One greater than I is coming. Though he was a wandering preacher who dressed in camel skins and ate grasshoppers, John s legacy is one of true royalty. His origins are similar to those foretold by God through the prophet Isaiah: You are my servant, he said to me, Israel through whom I show my glory (Isaiah 49:3).
