2 HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly The Nativity of St. John the Baptist June 24, 2018 From this man s descendants God, according to his promise, has brought to Israel a savior, Jesus. John heralded His coming by proclaiming a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel; and as John was completing his course, he would say, What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. Behold, one is coming after me; I am not worthy to unfasten the sandals on His feet. My brothers, children of the family of Abraham, and those others among you who are God-fearing, to us this word of salvation has been sent. The church celebrates the birth of three persons Mary, Jesus and John the Baptist. We spend time with John, especially during advent, recalling his conception, the meeting of his mother with Mary, and his ministry in the desert, preparing the way of the Lord. St. Paul today, in the reading from the Acts of the Apostles, helps us focus on the role of John. He was a herald announcing the coming of the Messiah, an arrow pointing out the One he would call the Lamb of God. The church today is the herald of the Good News. In the Joy of the Gospel, Pope Francis points out that the kerygma, the announcement or proclamation of the Good News is vital for us today. We are to be like John the Baptist, announcing, being the herald that we have salvation in the person of Jesus Christ. Hear ye, hear ye. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION OUR NEW RELIGIOUS EDUCATION WEBSITE AND REGISTRATION WENT OUT ON MONDAY, JUNE 18, Please register your child/children for our NEW and exciting Program. Deadline for all forms is August 15, To register, go to and click on the Religious Education tab. Any questions, please contact the Religious Education Office at or questions to pcl@nativitymonroe.org. Thank you! Dear Parish Family, A MESSAGE FROM FATHER ED The peace of the Lord be with you this day! Two weeks ago I dined with a group of guys from my high school days at Hudson Catholic High School in Jersey City. What prompted this reunion was the sudden death of one of our classmates, Thomas Ramos. Tom was a resident in Florida where he lived with his wife. He died of a massive heart attack while playing golf one day. As we gathered together and reached out to one another on social media I became aware of another classmate, Roger Corrado, who coaches at Hoboken Catholic Academy. He made us aware of a student, Nicholas, who is currently in foster care and desires to attend high school at our alma mater Hudson Catholic. Nick is a kid with great promise who is trying to make it and needs help. Even with all the pain he has experienced in his short life he tutors other kids in the foster care system. I also came to know that Nick s sister is also in foster care. He is extraordinary in that he always puts his sister s needs before his own. Our parish family has always been generous in responding to needs of others whether it be the local food pantry, the BackPack for Kids project, the Giving Tree at Christmas and the scholarship fund for the children of Guatemala. I would like our parish to adopt Nick and his sister. I personally made a donation of one thousand dollars towards Nick s tuition. If you would like to join me in this endeavor kindly forward any donations to the name and address listed below. I will keep you apprised of his situation and progress. We want Nick to feel he is valued for the young man he has become and what he has accomplished in life. Our goal is to make Nick feel he is receiving assistance based on his ability, not his need. Thank you in advance for caring for one of God s little ones. Whatever you do for one of these, the least of mine, you do for me! Pax, Fr.Ed For those who wish to assist Nicholas Bialobrezeski with his education at Hudson Catholic High School kindly forward any donations to: Mr. Patrick Dunne 1 Orient Way Suite F386 Rutherford, NJ 07070
3 This is a second in a series of articles on the Ministries at Nativity of Our Lord Parish. A Parish Ministry Fair will be held the weekend of September 15-16, where you can speak to parishioners who are involved in our ministries and possibly find a ministry where you might serve. Lay Eucharistic Minister A Lay Eucharistic Minister is a lay person who assists the priest in administering the sacraments of Holy Communion - the consecrated bread and wine. The Eucharistic Minister may also take the consecrated host to those who are ill, or otherwise unable to attend Mass. Having a sufficient number of ministers available to serve as Eucharistic Ministers is an important dimension in creating the prayerful environment for Mass as well as attending to the spiritual needs of the parish community. At Nativity, Eucharistic Ministers serve at the daily and weekend Masses and bring communion to nursing home residents as well as to the homes of parishioners, who are unable to attend Mass. If you are interested in learning more about becoming a Eucharistic Minister, please contact Sister Marie Colette at Ext. 16 or sistermariecolette@nativitymonroe.org. The winning numbers for the Knights of Columbus Calendar Raffle are: June 17: 468 June 18: 950 June 19: 705 June 20: 268 June 21: 168 June 22: 899 June 23: 418 Thank you and Congratulations to the winners! Good luck again next week! The winning numbers are drawn in Fr. Congdon Hall every Saturday following the 4:00 p.m. Mass. Feel free to help us draw the numbers. The winning numbers are posted on our website SCRIPTURE and STORIES All are invited to attend a continuation of stories from Scriptures. These biblical meditations modeled on a prayer form taught by St. Ignatius Loyola are designed to encourage an in-dept relationship with Jesus and an awareness of God s action in our lives.
