For many people, being a Chrisan is defined by The Rules, meaning some list of things you can t do. It results in a very simple recipe for life. Follow The Rules and go to Heaven. Break The Rules and go to Hell. Do not pass Go. Do not collect $200. It seems that this mentality prompts the scribe to come to Jesus to ask Him: Which is the first of all the commandments? Being a scribe, his approach to his Jewish faith placed a premium on knowing and following The Rules. He wanted to check out whether this Rabbi Jesus was being consistent with tradion, going back to Moses. The foundaon of those statutes and commandments was the Scripture that came to be known as the Shema: Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD alone! Therefore, you shall love the LORD, your God, with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength. This prayer became so central that the Jewish people would literally aach a lile scroll of these words to their arms and foreheads. In addion, these words would be placed on the doorposts of their homes. Touching these words, and recing them every morning and evening, became a physical reminder of the importance of remembering God s place in their lives. (Many observant Jews sll maintain these tradions. In light of the violence inflicted upon the synagogue in Pisburgh, this is a good opportunity to honor our elder brothers and sisters in the faith. Let us thank God for their witness of charity and hospitality, ask for His healing, and for the darkness of hatred to be overcome by the light of love.) The consistent temptaon of religion and not just Chrisanity is for The Rules to be held up for their own sake. As followers of Jesus, we somemes forget is that HE is the one at the center. He is the one inving us into fullness of life in the Kingdom of God. The Rules are guardrails and road signs, but they are not the Kingdom. If you see the Golden Arches on a billboard, you don t cut across the field to it, thinking that you ve arrived at McDonald s. In our Chrisan faith, it is our relaonship with Jesus that idenfies us as disciples. I have rules in my marriage don t arrive home late without communicang, don t make a big purchase without discussing it, don t leave the seat up But simply following the rules is not sufficient to demonstrate married love and commitment. Being a husband who fulfills minimum requirements is not why I got married. So too with our connecon to Jesus and the Church. If we live by the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit, we will be constantly moving closer to seeing God s promises fulfilled. Instead of focusing on The Rules, we will naturally do what brings us into a greater friendship with Jesus, who is always able to save those who approach God through Him. -Steve Pable, Pastoral Associate

Box Green Bay, WI PH FAX I hope you have had a chance to read the special inserts of questions and answers in the Compass and on the website, ( Accountability and Listening Sessions) over the last several weeks. We are making progress on the action plan that I published and presented to you several weeks ago and I am pleased to report on another one of those steps. The U.S. bishops are joining together in a commitment of prayer and reparation leading up to the bishops general assembly, where we will be making critical decisions in response to the clergy sexual abuse crisis. With my brother bishops across the nation, I will be dedicating myself to seven days of intensified prayer and fasting, from Monday, November 5, through Sunday, November 11. The intentions for this period of prayer and sacrifice are three-fold: For the healing and support of all victims of clergy sexual abuse. For the conversion and just punishment of the perpetrators and concealers of sexual abuse. For the strength of the bishops to be holy shepherds in protecting and leading our sheep from all harm. If you feel called to do so, you are welcome to join me in praying for these intentions. I would also be grateful for any prayers for me and my brother bishops during our general assembly, that we may follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit in responding to the tragedy of clergy sexual abuse in the Church. Please be assured of my prayers for you and your families as well, as I remain Sincerely Yours in Christ, Most Reverend David L. Ricken, DD, Bishop of Green Bay

5 Grace Notes Eucharisc Praying and Consumerism Every Eucharisc prayer begins with an opening dialogue, the conclusion of which has the priest saying, Let us give thanks to the Lord our God and the assembly responding, It is right and just. Giving thanks to God is an essenal aspect of Chrisan liturgy, especially Eucharisc liturgy. Giving thanks is menoned explicitly three mes in the Second Vacan Council s Constuon on the Sacred Liturgy (in nos. 6, 48, and 105) and six mes in the General Instrucon on the Roman Missal (in nos. 2, 5, 48, 54, 55, and 62). Acknowledging gratude and thankfulness occurs throughout the Mass, including, notably, as the final words spoken by the assembly, "Thanks be to God!" This is not a maer merely of rendering thanks to God for discrete blessings (e.g., acknowledging God s revelatory iniave in readings from Scripture). Timothy Brunk (connued next week) -Regina Reale, Director of Worship & Music In thanksgiving for God s blessings and to help welcome all those who enter, consider lending a hand for even 1 hour to clean the main church. Saturday, 11/10/18, 7am-11am. Supplies provided, although if you have a small pail (ice cream buckets work well) or hand vacuum or shop vac, please bring that along. In the event there is a funeral, the alternate cleaning date is 11/17/18 at the same me. Call Chris ( ) or the parish office to confirm there is no conflict. Pillars stand the test of me and are a solid structure that will hold up our community for generaons to come. These three agencies already collaborate oen, and the merger will allow a beer system of case management and improve client outcomes. It's very excing and we are blessed to have this in our community.
