Chesterton famously wrote: The Chris an ideal has not been tried and found wan ng. It has been found difficult; and le untried. Pastoral Ponderings NEENAH The revolu onary teaching that Jesus lays out for His followers has been widely ignored. I know I m a li le tempted to skip those pages of the Bible. Forgiving those who hurt us, praying for those who persecute us these are ideas that sound noble on paper. We admire it when we hear about others doing it, but have a hard me imagining it in our own lives. The fact is, loving my enemy, or turning the other cheek, is not something that can be done in the abstract. If it remains theore cal, it means exactly nothing. It only takes on value when it is actually put into prac ce. Forgiveness is deeply personal; no one can forgive on my behalf. It is as profound as the hurt or pain that I experienced in the first place. And unlike so many other ac ons that we take, loving my enemy is an act of the will. It is not something that is helped along by the emo onal li that I get from other nice gestures. It is precisely the opposite reac on of what my emo ons tell me to do. So how is it even possible to live in the manner that Jesus requires? We find hints in the Scriptures that accompany today s Gospel. David shows a genuine reverence for God s anointed, and so refuses to take Saul s life. We can cul vate the same reverence for the sanc ty and dignity of life; when we recognize God s mark on every person, we start to desire his or her ul mate good. Paul shows how the call of Christ elevates us to a divine des ny; God s grace raises and perfects our human nature: Just as we have borne the image of the earthly one [Adam], we shall also bear the image of the heavenly one [Jesus]. Jesus puts it perhaps most plainly of all: Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. We re called to form habits of humility and compassion, par cularly in our rela onship with those who we might be inclined to avoid. Is there someone I have a hard me loving? Perhaps it s someone of a different culture or lifestyle or skin color or belief system or poli cal persuasion. God has given me infinitely more than I deserve. How will I extend love and generosity and mercy to someone this week who I feel does not deserve it? -Steve Pable, Pastoral Associate

The Preface: A er the procession and prepara on of gi s comes the center and summit of the en re celebra on - the Eucharis c Prayer. The General Instruc on of the Roman Missal (GIRM) explains that in the Eucharis c Prayer, the priest associates the people with himself in the prayer that he addresses in the name of the en re community to God the Father through Jesus Christ in the Holy Spirit, and the en re congrega on of the faithful joins with Christ in confessing the great deeds of God and in the offering of Sacrifice. (# 78) The first part of the Eucharis c Prayer is called the Preface. I suspect that most people seldom bother to read the Preface of a book but skip over it to begin at Chapter One. We o en do the same with the Preface of the Eucharis c Prayer at Mass because we get distracted or our thoughts wander and the Preface is over before we re aware of it. This is unfortunate because it is an integral part of the Eucharis c Prayer. Anyone wan ng to understand the purpose of liturgical seasons and feasts could do no be er than to listen carefully to the Prefaces that are used on these occasions. In the introductory dialogue between the presider and the assembly that follows the Prayer over the Offerings, the priest says, Let us give thanks to the Lord our God and the people respond, It is right and just. Almost every Preface picks up the phrase right and just and begins: It is truly right and just, our duty and our salva on, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God. This makes it clear that the Eucharis c Prayer is prayed by the en re assembly, not just the presider. A common theme of all Prefaces is thanksgiving, expressing gra tude for the whole work of salva on or for some special aspect of it. The Preface concludes with the Holy, Holy, the text of which comes en rely from scripture: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The Roman Missal contains over 90 prefaces for feasts, seasons, vo ve Masses and special occasions. There are guidelines to follow in deciding which Preface is to be used for a par cular Mass. Some mes usually for feasts and seasons a proper preface is set down for the day. On these days, Eucharis c Prayer IV cannot be used because it has a fixed preface that can never be replaced by another. Eucharis c Prayer II also has a proper preface but another may be subs tuted. Eucharis c Prayers I and III do not have a fixed preface and one is chosen for the feast, season or celebra on. The Eucharis c Prayer for Various Needs and Occasions and the Eucharis c Prayers for Masses of Reconcilia on have their own prefaces so are not suitable when a proper preface is set down for the day. -Regina Reale, Director of Worship & Music

The Church stands resolutely against this modern-day slavery, which affects people in the US and around the world." - Catholic Relief Services This is a very real tragedy hidden in plain sight. 6 2 BIG EVENTS 1 SPECIAL DAY SUNDAY, MARCH 10 th after the 10:00 Mass New Pastor Process You probably know that Fr. Larry will be moving to Senior Priest Status (i.e. retirement) effective June 30, This means that the Diocese of Green Bay, under Bishop David Ricken, will be assigning a new pastor for St. Gabriel the Archangel in the coming months. As part of this process, a representative from the Priest Personnel Board, Fr. Don Everts, will be visiting St. Gabriel on Sunday, March 10 th at 12:15 pm. He will be here to learn more about our perception of the pastoral needs of our parish. To be clear, this is NOT a meeting to vote on or select a new pastor! Rather, it is one step in an established diocesan procedure to help discern the character and requirements of our particular community. Your thoughtful input will be a helpful step in making a good transition to new pastoral leadership. Fr. Don will also be able to address questions you may have. In the meantime, if you have questions or concerns, please direct them to Fr. Larry, Deacon Tom, or a parish staff or parish council member. Lenten Reflection and Rice Bowl March 10 th is also the First Sunday of Lent, the perfect time to embrace our penitential practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Immediately after the 10:00 Mass, people of ALL AGES can plan on a FREE simple meatless meal in Stingle Hall. After the meal, we will have a brief prayer and presentation on how we can make a difference in the lives of our brothers and sisters who struggle in desperate poverty. This will kick off our annual Operation Rice Bowl, organized by Catholic Relief Services. It will open our eyes, minds, and hearts to be transformed in this holy season. The Lenten meal and reflection will adjourn in time for everyone to attend the gathering with Fr. Don Everts of the Priest Personnel Board. (see above) MASS INTENTIONS: Our Mass inten on calendar for 2019 has many daily Masses available. Having a Mass said in memory of a loved one is a beau ful remembrance. Mass offerings may also be given for the health of a sick person, a newly married couple, a young person preparing for Confirma on or First Holy Communion, a person preparing to enter the Church through RCIA, a college student, a wedding anniversary or any other prayer inten on. We limit weekend/holy day Masses to two per year per person, but weekday Masses are open to request. There is a customary offering of $10 for a Mass inten on. Please contact the parish office if you would like to schedule a Mass. In an cipa on of our next pastor, we will not begin taking Mass Inten ons for 2020 un l July 15th. We are looking for volunteers to help with Lenten fish fries. If you are a past worker please let us know you are interested again. If you are a new worker please consider that this can be a fun way to include some service in your Lenten Schedule. Visit the parish website at and click on the Fish Fry icon under Parish News to sign up. Or add your name to the list in S ngle Hall. Fish Fries are March 8, 15, 22 & April 5, NEW Fundraiser Policy 2019: Parish Pastoral Council formed a sub-commi ee - Resource and Mission Commi ee - to review the number of group fundraisers and organiza on sales that occur during the year in S ngle Hall and was asked to create Policy and Procedure to regulate it. While we create this Policy, during Lent of 2019, we are pu ng a hold on ALL outside group fundraisers that raise funds that are not a direct benefit to St. Gabriel Parish itself and do not support the Parish Mission Statement. This will be in effect at Events such as the Fish Fry/Bingo and at all weekend Masses during the Lenten Season. We understand that there are many good causes to support in the local area as well as na onal or global organiza ons, but we must put the needs of St. Gabriel and the ministries that Social Concerns supports above the requests of outside organiza ons.
