What do I truly believe is worth spending my life on? Would someone be able to tell, looking at me from the outside? Who do I trust to help me chart my course and set my goals? Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose hope is the Lord. How easy it is to run around in our rou nes daily, weekly, even annually and never pause for breath. We re dictated by our schedules, allowing others to tell us what is most important and to priori ze our me. Deadlines and commitments may be imposed on us by a boss, or a teacher, or a customer, or our child s coach. We may have an obliga on to our children or our parents. Or we may be seduced out of our me by social media or shopping or other diversions. We don t want to think about it, but this isn t the life that Jesus pictured for us. He did not suffer humilia on and a bloody death on the cross so that we could chase our tails. If our goal is the pleasure and sa sfac on that this life offers, then we are completely divorced from the Kingdom values that Jesus proclaims. Blessed are you, He says, who are poor hungry weeping when people hate you on account of the Son of Man. And even more sobering is this: Woe to you who are rich...who are filled...who laugh This sort of thing does not go on marke ng posters or test well in focus groups! Make no mistake most of us qualify as rich, compared to the rest of the world. Most of us are filled, and few of us can claim to be excluded and insulted because we follow Jesus. If Jesus is talking about me, how do I need to change the way I see the world? How does it affect the way I spend my day? The bo om line is that we have to decide whether we are going to live only for this world, or for something greater. Do we really believe that the only things that last are those that come from God? And if we are expec ng an earthly reward for following Jesus, it s not coming. If we want proof that what Jesus offers is worth it, St. Paul points us to the founda on of our faith that Christ is raised from the dead. If we reject the fact of Jesus resurrec on, then we may as well not profess any belief at all. If Christ has not been raised, your faith in vain; you are s ll in your sins. Un l we believe that with our en re being, we will remain a ached to cheap and flee ng subs tutes in this world. As Lent approaches, we will have another chance to put these values into prac ce. It s worth thinking about right now, and considering how authen cally I live out what I believe. Because discipleship makes a difference right here and right now. -Steve Pable, Pastoral Associate

Prepara on and Presenta on of the Gi s: The Liturgy of the Word at Mass is followed by the Prepara on of the Offerings, or what the 1970 Missal called Prepara on of the Gi s. Both terms are be er than the old name The Offertory because they more clearly describe the purpose of the rite: to prepare the altar, the bread and wine and the assembly for the offering that takes place during the Eucharis c Prayer. To use the term offertory for this part of the Mass suggests that it is when the sacrifice is offered, whereas it is during the Eucharis c Prayer that Jesus selfoffering is recalled and re-presented. We are joined to Christ s sacrifice when, as members of the body of Christ, the Church, we offer the consecrated bread and wine to the Father. This might sound like nit-picking, but being careful to use the correct terminology in liturgy can help over me to shape the assembly s understanding of what we are doing at worship. The Prepara on of the Offerings/Gi s has a long history. In the early Church, people brought bread and wine from home and gave them to the presider to use in the celebra on of the Eucharist. They also contributed other gi s of food or money to help the work of the Church. It was a concrete way for everyone to par cipate in the real offering of the Mass. The primary elements of the Prepara on of the Offerings are the bringing forward of the gi s, placing the gi s on the altar, and the prayer said over them. Other elements such as an accompanying song are secondary. The procession with the gi s by members of the assembly is a powerful expression of the assembly s par cipa on in the eucharis c ac on. The General Instruc on of the Roman Missal (GIRM) men ons only bread, wine, and money (or other gi s for the poor and the Church) in the procession. It is a procession of gi s: you can t take them back again a erwards! Other objects can be included in the entrance procession if they are of sufficient liturgical significance. The Order of Mass says this about the prayers of prepara on over the bread (and wine): "The priest, standing at the altar, takes the paten with the bread and, holding it slightly raised above the altar, says inaudibly: Blessed are you, Lord, God of all crea on... Then he places the paten with the bread on the corporal. If no offertory song is sung, the priest may say the preceding words in a low voice; then the people may respond: Blessed be God for ever." A er the priest has washed his hands and the music is finished, he invites the people to join in prayer: Pray, brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father. A er the people stand and respond, the presider sings or says the Prayer over the Offerings, a collect which is part of the Proper of the Mass, meaning that it varies for each Mass. -Regina Reale, Director of Worship & Music

6 ST. GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL IS A WELCOMING CATHOLIC COMMUNITY OF DISCIPLES WHO ENCOUNTER JESUS, JOYFULLY AND COMPASSIONATELY SERVING GOD S PEOPLE. St. Gabriel the Archangel Something More: Go and Announce the Gospel of the Lord And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached throughout the world as a witness to all na ons. Ma hew 24:14 Facilitated by: Clare Sturm, Diocesan Divine Worship Coordinator Saturday, February 23, 2019 Liturgical Ministries: Service to the Liturgy Service to one another Registration Reflection 8:30 am (with light refreshments) 9:00 am - 10:45 am For more information, please contact Regina Reale rreale@smcatholicschools.org ext. 226 Clare Sturm began ministry in the Diocese of Green Bay worship office in 2007 at the invitation of Bishop David Zubik. Current primary responsibilities include: preparation for annual large Diocesan liturgies and for special Masses for Diocesan Departments, assisting parishes and organizations for preparing Masses with Bishop Ricken, campus chapel leadership for daily Masses and special occasions, ministries, and music. Clare holds a Masters of Theological Studies from St. Norbert College. Her BA degree is from Mount Marty College (Benedictine) at Yankton, SD, with studies in Education, Music, and Theology. 2 BIG EVENTS 1 SPECIAL DAY SUNDAY, MARCH 10 th after the 10:00 Mass New Pastor Process You probably know that Fr. Larry will be moving to Senior Priest Status (i.e. retirement) effective June 30, This means that the Diocese of Green Bay, under Bishop David Ricken, will be assigning a new pastor for St. Gabriel the Archangel in the coming months. As part of this process, a representative from the Priest Personnel Board, Fr. Don Everts, will be visiting St. Gabriel on Sunday, March 10 th at 12:15 pm. He will be here to learn more about our perception of the pastoral needs of our parish. To be clear, this is NOT a meeting to vote on or select a new pastor! Rather, it is one step in an established diocesan procedure to help discern the character and requirements of our particular community. Your thoughtful input will be a helpful step in making a good transition to new pastoral leadership. Fr. Don will also be able to address questions you may have. In the meantime, if you have questions or concerns, please direct them to Fr. Larry, Deacon Tom, or a parish staff or parish council member. Lenten Reflection and Rice Bowl March 10 th is also the First Sunday of Lent, the perfect time to embrace our penitential practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Immediately after the 10:00 Mass, people of ALL AGES can plan on a FREE simple meatless meal in Stingle Hall. After the meal, we will have a brief prayer and presentation on how we can make a difference in the lives of our brothers and sisters who struggle in desperate poverty. This will kick off our annual Operation Rice Bowl, organized by Catholic Relief Services. It will open our eyes, minds, and hearts to be transformed in this holy season. The Lenten meal and reflection will 6 adjourn in time for everyone to attend the gathering with Fr. Don Everts of the Priest Personnel Board. (see above)
