A N N U N C I A T I O N D C.OR G FIRST READING: 1 SAMUEL 3:3B-10, 19 This powerful story describes Samuel, who at the time was the servant of the high priest. The Lord called out to Samuel, who twice thought Eli had called him. They gradually realized that it was the Lord who called for him. So the third time Samuel answered and the Lord remained with Samuel as he grew. SECOND READING: 1 CORINTHIANS 6:13C-15A, Paul explains to the Corinthians that their body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. He tells them to avoid lewd conduct, and glorify God by keeping their bodies pure. GOSPEL: JOHN 1:35-42 John told two of his disciples that Jesus is the Lamb of God. They turned and followed him, immediately curious and attracted to him. Andrew told his brother Simon about Jesus. Simon also came to meet Jesus, who renamed him Cephas, or Peter. CELEBRATING THE SACRAMENTS B A P T I S M : The sacrament joyfully celebrates the entrance of members into our Catholic community. Baptisms are celebrated on Saturday mornings at 9:45am or by appointment, following preparation of the parents. Baptisms for adults take place through the RCIA process. CONFIRMATION: Through the sacrament of confirmation, the baptized are more perfectly bound to the church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Confirmation is offered to adults through the RCIA process, and annually for our eighth-grade students. As with the other sacraments of initiation, preparation is involved. MATRIMONY: Couples should contact the parish office as soon as possible or at least six months in advance of the desired wedding date to make arrangements for preparation. RITE OF CHRISTIAN IN ITIATION FOR A DULTS: For those who are interested in finding out more information about the Catholic faith and/or interested in becoming Catholic. Please call the parish office. A NOINTING OF THE SICK: Our parish continues Christ s ministry of making whole the members of our community who suffer physical or emotional ills with Anointing of the Sick. Please call the parish office if you would like to receive this sacrament.

3 3 January 14, 2018 SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME CONGRATULATIONS TO MONSIGNOR ANTONICELLI Cardinal Wuerl has appointed Monsignor Charles Antonicelli as the Acting Moderator of the Curia, succeeding Bishop Barry C. Knestout, who has been appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Richmond. Monsignor Antonicelli will continue to serve as the Episcopal Vicar for Canonical Services. The Moderator of the Curia serves as the chief operating officer for the archdiocese s central offices, assisting Cardinal Wuerl in managing and overseeing all of the archdiocese s administrative affairs. Please keep Monsignor Antonicelli in your prayers CARDINAL S APPEAL Many of our parishioners will receive a mailing from Cardinal Wuerl this week asking for a pledge to the 2018 Cardinal s Appeal. The theme of the Appeal is, Seek First the Kingdom of God. (Matthew 6:33) As we seek first the kingdom of God, we have the capability of helping it to be present in our lives and in the lives of those around us. How does this happen? Through our works of charity, our works of love, and our works of compassion. Contributions to the Cardinal s Appeal offers each of us the opportunity to respond to the needs of others by enabling ministries and services that touch thousands of lives. Please prayerfully consider a generous pledge to the 2018 Cardinal s Appeal. MOTHER TERESA VOCATION SOCIETY ANNUAL DAY OF RECOLLECTION On Saturday, January 20, 2018, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Rev. Mark Ivany, Director of Priest Vocations for the Archdiocese of Washington, will lead a day of recollection at Annunciation Catholic Church. From the age of about 20 until his death at 105, he lived as a hermit in remote hilltop and desert locations. What is known about him comes from a life written by St. Athanasius of Alexandria. Around 306 he began to accept disciples, founding his first monastery as a collection of hermits cells. He cultivated a garden, wove rush mats, and fought many temptations and demons. Visitors sought his wise counsel, collected in the sayings of the desert fathers, and the bishops of Alexandria summoned him at age 87 to help refute Arianism. 5 5 January 14, 2018 SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME POPE S CORNER THE REVOLUTION OF TENDERNESS The Gospel tells us constantly to run the risk of face-to-face encounter with others, with their physical presence which challenges us, with their pain and their pleas, with their joy which infects us in our close and continuous interaction. True faith in the incarnate Son of God is inseparable from self-giving, from membership in the community, from service, from reconciliation with others. The Son of God, by becoming flesh, summoned us to the revolution of tenderness. Evangelii Gaudium Reflection: How have you experienced Christ s tenderness? Where is he calling you to live out a revolution of tenderness and mercy? In your family? In your parish? In your workplace? Take time to contemplate God s love for you, and then ask the Lord who he is calling you to love this week. The Social Concerns Committee is extremely grateful and thanks you for your abundant response to the 2017 Christmas Project. Christmas was brightened for many in need, over $7,500 in gift cards were distributed to our sister parish Holy Redeemer, Friendship Place, and FAIRGirls.
