5 5 January 10, 2016 THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD THE YEAR OF MERCY A REFLECTION Karen, Patti, and Jimmy had a problem. They were coordinating the Catholic Charities Christmas Angel Tree program, where generous people adopt and provide Christmas presents for children in need. With a week to go, 300 children still needed adopting! With Msgr. Enzler s help, Karen, Patti, and Jimmy reached out to the Archdiocesan community would people Walk with Francis to support these kids? Yes! In six days, all children had been adopted and thousands of dollars donated. How beautiful to see so many people recognize that mercy is a loving response to the needs of others! Find ways to share mercy with others in our community at mercy.adw.org. MOMENTS OF MERCY FOR JANUARY 2016 When we think about pilgrimages, we probably think about medieval people walking great distances to awe-inspiring churches. Yet, Pope Francis describes what is at the heart of pilgrimage and encourages us to each make one during this Jubilee of Mercy. He writes that life itself is a pilgrimage, and the human being is a viator, a pilgrim traveling along the road, making his way to the desired destination (Misericordiae Vultus, no. 14). Pope Francis encourages each of us to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Door in our diocese some time during this Jubilee of Mercy. Being committed to the journey of pilgrimage helps us focus our attention on our spiritual journey and walk closer with God. Similarly, our daily journey to live out the mercy of God is also a goal to reach and requires dedication and sacrifice (Misericordiae Vultus, no. 14). 1. With your family or a parish group, plan a pilgrimage to the Holy Door within your diocese for some time during this year. 2. Each day, give yourself one small goal of mercy, compassion, and love to journey toward for example, being kind to a difficult coworker so that, by those actions, you are able to walk closer to God on the pilgrimage of Christian life. Each month casseroles are made by our parishioners and taken down to S.O.M.E. The casseroles are frozen at home and dropped off in the church hallway outside the kitchen door. Recipes may be found on our website at The church is open weekday mornings or on Saturdays from 8am-6pm for drop off. You can also drop off on your way to Mass on Sunday! Deliver donations on the 3rd weekend of every month. C L E A N I N G UP A F T E R C H R I S T M A S? NEED R O O M FO R YOUR N E W G I FTS? Consider donating to the Annual Christmas Bazaar! Donations may be dropped off at the Parish Monday- Friday from 10am-3pm.
6 ANNUNCIATION CATHOLIC CHURCH 6 POPE S CORNER A City on a Hill We Christians must do this: replace malice with innocence, replace power with love, replace pride with humility, replace status with service. Being disciples of the Lamb means not living like a besieged citadel, but like a city placed on a hill, open, welcoming, and supportive. It means not assuming closed attitudes but rather proposing the Gospel to everyone, bearing witness by our lives that following Jesus makes us freer and more joyous.
