An angel bearing the seal of the living God demands that the land and sea not be destroyed; huge crowds stand before the throne of the Lamb crying out that salvation comes from God; angels gathered round and praised God; an elder questions John and explains that those dressed in white are the ones who have survived the great period of trial. SECOND READING: 1 John 3:1-3 Once again John speaks to us of love. He points out to us the great love that the Father has for us by allowing us to be called children of God. John explains that the world doesn't recognize us because it never recognized Jesus. Our future will be revealed to us and in that light we shall see him as he is. GOSPEL: Matthew 5:1-12a When Jesus saw the crowds of people he went up to the mountainside gathered his disciples around him and began to teach them. This lesson in love has come to be known to us as the great "Sermon on the Mount" or "The Beatitudes. (No Sunday Drop-Off). This drive provides clean clothing and other gently used or new household items to charitable organizations serving those in need in the DC area. Your efforts to presort clothes by type (i.e., men, women, children or infants) before drop off would be greatly appreciated. Items Not Accepted: Broken items, stained clothes and linens, vases, pictures/posters, and decorative items (which are items that are generally not requested by organizations). We are also seeking volunteers for 3 hour shifts to help sort donations and make deliveries. Jay Melder, Chief of Staff to the Director of the District Department of Human Services, will present an overview of Homeward DC, a progressive plan that the city projects will make homelessness in the District a rare, brief and non-recurring experience by What lies ahead as implementation engages the entire community? Next Sunday, November 8, 11:30-12:20pm (immediately following the 10:30am Mass in the Church) How do we actively respond as global citizens with Catholic values to the Pope's message on environmental stewardship, local implications, service and more? Our Panelists: Mark Rohlena is the Director of the Office of Domestic Social Development in the Department of Justice, Peace and Human Development at the USCCB. As a resource to the bishops, he works to advance Catholic social teaching in federal policymaking such as environmental stewardship. Joelle Novey is the Director of the Interfaith Power & Light (MD, DC, NoVA) a program of the InterFaith Conference of Metropolitan Washington promoting our religious response to climate change. ANNUAL KRISTALLNACHT SERVICE The annual commemoration of Kristallnacht will be held at Annunciation Church on Tuesday, November 10 th at 7:30pm. All are invited and welcome! There will be a reception following the prayer. The term Kristallnacht (Night of Broken Glass) refers to the organized anti-jewish riots in Germany and Austria, November 9-10, It is considered, in many ways, a harbinger of the Final Solution. During this solemn prayer service, members of Annunciation, Washington Hebrew Congregation and St. Alban s Episcopal Church will also remember our present day violence and genocide of peoples throughout the world, in Syria and in so many places in Africa, particularly. Prayers offered as an interreligious community bring powerful witness to the fact that we must stand together to combat present day evils and atrocities. As Catholics we are called to pray for those who have gone before us that they may attain the beatific vision of God in heaven. They may be helped by our prayers and by the sacrifice of the Mass.
