They ask God to remember, not their sins, but that We are all the work of your hands. SECOND READING: 1 CORINTHIANS 1:3-9 Paul explains to the Corinthians that they are specially favored by God who has sent his only Son to them. He reminds us all that it was through God s grace that we have been called to kinship with Christ. GOSPEL: MARK 13:33-37 Just as a servant watching over the master s house does not know when he will return, we do not know the hour of the Second Coming. Mark reminds us of the warning from Jesus to always be on guard, for we know not the day nor the hour. 3 3 December 3, 2017 FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT THE POPE S PRAYER INTENTIONS The Holy Father asks for our prayers for a specific intention each month. You are invited to answer the Holy Father's request and to join with many people worldwide in praying for these intentions. DECEMBER INTENTION The Elderly That the elderly, sustained by families and Christian communities, may apply their wisdom and experience to spreading the faith and forming the new generations. DEC. 2ND & 3RD AT ANNUNCIATION From the Heart of the Holy Land, from Bethlehem, the City of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the "Holy Land Roots" Team is coming to our church on the December 2nd & 3rd, They will be offering genuine handmade religious items made by handicraftsmen/women from Bethlehem! These items are handmade by Catholic families in Bethlehem who rely on sales for their daily bread. For more than ten years Bethlehem Christians have been enduring many hardships as tourism in Bethlehem has plummeted and access to other sources of income has been sharply restricted due to the ongoing conflict. Many Christians left their homeland. The Christian population of the Holy Land went down from 30% in the last century to almost 1% today. George Ghanem, an indigenous Christian from Bethlehem will be standing by the carvings after all Masses. Don t miss the opportunity to support, as we always hope and pray with you to keep the bridges of faith with our brothers and sisters of the Holy Land. To know more visit them online: Five hundred yards from where Jesus Christ was born, Holy Family Hospital, a maternity and neonatal hospital, offers state-of-the-art services to all women, children, and families in Bethlehem and beyond, regardless of their religion, nationality, or ability to pay. This makes Holy Family Hospital a modern-day manger: always embracing families and helping them bring new life into the world. To learn more visit birthplaceofhope.org. Christmas cards, stuffed grape leaves, and baklava will be sold and the proceeds will support the Holy Family Hospital. VOCATIONS CHECK IT OUT! 5 5 December 3, 2017 FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT POPE S CORNER THE FACE OF THE NEEDY, THE FACE OF JESUS Thanks to baptism, we are capable of forgiving and of loving even those who offend us and do evil to us. By our baptism, we recognize in the least and in the poor the face of the Lord who visits us and makes himself close. Baptism helps us to recognize in the face of the needy, the suffering, and also of our neighbor, the face of Jesus. All this is possible thanks to the power of baptism! General Audience, January 8, 2014 Reflection: At first, it may seem that our baptism has little to do with helping the needy. But baptism is a beautiful reflection of God s mercy for us. Many of us were helpless infants during our baptism. We had done nothing and could do nothing, and yet, in our baptism, God gave us his mercy. Let s live out this baptism by giving God s mercy to those in need. CHILDREN S CHRISTMAS PAGEANT MASS Once again we are preparing for our annual children s Christmas Pageant Mass which will be on Christmas Eve, Sunday, December 24th at 4:00pm. Children ages four and up are cordial l y i n vi ted to participate i n the retelling of the birth of Jesus. Practices will be held on Saturday, December 9th and 16th from 10:00am to 11:00am in the church. Please Patrice Morace at morace@annunciationdc.org to register your child. The feast is fixed nine months before the feast marking Mary s birthday on Sept. 8. 9 9 December 3, 2017 FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT ADVENT Beginning the Church's liturgical year, Advent (from, "ad-venire" in Latin or "to come to") is the season encompassing the four Sundays (and weekdays) leading up to the celebration of Christmas. The Advent season is a time of preparation that directs our hearts and minds to Christ s second coming at the end of time and also to the anniversary of the Lord s birth on Christmas. The final days of Advent, from December 17 to December 24, focus particularly on our preparation for the celebrations of the Nativity of our Lord (Christmas). Advent devotions including the Advent wreath, remind us of the meaning of the season. An Advent calendar can help you fully enter in to the season with daily activity and prayer suggestions to prepare you spiritually for the birth of Jesus Christ. (from A PRAYER FOR LIGHTING THE ADVENT WREATH CANDLES FIRST WEEK All-powerful God, increase our strength of will for doing good that Christ may find an eager welcome at his coming and call us to his side in the kingdom of heaven, where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. (excerpted from A Prayer Book of Catholic Devotions) Blessing of an Advent Wreath The blessing of an Advent Wreath takes place on the First Sunday of Advent or on the evening before the First Sunday of Advent. When the blessing of the Advent Wreath is celebrated in the home, it is appropriate that it be blessed by a parent or another member of the family. All make the sign of the cross as the leader says: Our help is in the name of the Lord. Response (R/.) Who made heaven and earth. Then the Scripture, Isaiah 9: (lines 1-2 and 5-6) or Isaiah 63 (lines & 19) or Isaiah 64 (lines 2-7) is read: Reader: The Word of the Lord. R/. Thanks be to God. With hands joined, the leader says: Lord our God, we praise you for your Son, Jesus Christ: he is Emmanuel, the hope of the peoples, he is the wisdom that teaches and guides us, he is the Savior of every nation. Lord God, let your blessing come upon us as we light the candles of this wreath. May the wreath and its light be a sign of Christ s promise to bring us salvation. May he come quickly and not delay. We ask this through Christ our Lord. R/. Amen. The blessing may conclude with a verse from O Come, O Come, Emmanuel : O come, desire of nations, bind in one the hearts of humankind; bid ev ry sad division cease and be thyself our Prince of peace. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel. From Catholic Household Blessings & Prayers
