3 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, December 23, 2018, Fourth Sunday of Advent From the Pastor s Desk Here we are at four candles. An entire Advent wreath lit up, showing that we are nearing the completion of our time of preparation for the coming of Christ. In another day, we will be waking up to Christmas Eve, and the celebrations that mark this festivity, whether it is coming to the pageant in the church, joined with our four o clock vigil Mass, or the Midnight Mass, this year being celebrated by Fr. Frank Pizzarelli. Maybe it is the traditional Italian way of celebrating with the various fish dishes, or a more low key observation consisting of a husband and wife sharing a cocktail, as Christmas songs play over the stereo. No matter how we celebrate the end of this Advent season and the beginning of our Christmas season, we need to acknowledge what it is that brings us to this time. Presents! I m just kidding. What we mark at this time of year, every year, is the beginning of a new life, not just in the baby born in Bethlehem two millennia ago, but the new life that that birth promised us. With the coming of Christ into the world, the face of the Father was revealed, the very nature of God was laid open before the human race. In the very act of becoming one of us, Jesus revealed to us the most important truth of our existence; we are loved. We believe in the Holy Trinity, that is three Divine Persons, perfectly united as One God, what Christ reveals is the perfection of the relationship between Him and the Father, tied in the bonds of love that are the Holy Spirit. This relationship, which is part of the very nature of God, and since all things that exist, come from the mind of God, reflects God s own nature. As Christ took on human flesh, we are called in the Incarnation to participate in this relationship with God; in taking on our humanity, Jesus calls us to divinity. Reflecting on that relationship we are called to participate in with God, we recognize that we live out this relationship with one another. Many of us may have come back to the Church for Christmas Mass, or even the whole of Advent, because something inside of us wanted to be a part of the worship, the traditions and even the relationships with those we may not have seen for a while. That is a beautiful beginning. Now we need to ask ourselves, is this something that I know in my heart I should be a part of on a regular basis? Have all of the other things that my life has been filled up with, that I have filled my life up with, compare to the feeling, even the momentary feeling, of knowing that God loves me and wants to be a part of my life? Whether I was away at school, or overseas, traveling or living in different locations, it was at Mass that I found myself belonging; belonging to something beyond myself, even if I could not fully understand, I knew that I was supposed to be there with Christ. Even when the Mass was celebrated in languages that I did not know, I somehow felt that I was a part of that community of believers, especially as those around me said: La Paz, Paix à vous, Der Friede sei mit dir, I was not a stranger, but a fellow Catholic, exchanging the sign of peace. One of the great gifts of Christmas, is that our brothers and sisters, who may not have been with us through the year, are with us now, and we rejoice over that blessing. Just as parents feel the joy of their children gathering around the dinner table after they have been away for a time, our Father rejoices to have His children gathered around the table of the altar. While we may not have always seen eye to eye with the sibling sitting across from us at the dinner table, Christmas allows us to focus on the love that we do share, with each other, with the rest of the family, and as a worship community, with our neighbors and those we may never have met before. Thank you to everyone who has come to celebrate this Advent season, and this Christmas with our parish community. Whether you come every Sunday, or on Holydays, just visiting, or thinking about returning full time, remember that this Church is your home, and we are reminded by the child whose first home was shared with animals, that all are welcome in this worship community. Merry Christmas, Fr. Henry

4 December 23, 2018 Fourth Sunday of Advent 23 de diciembre de 2018 Cuarto Domingo de Adviento MEMORIES AND DREAMS Throughout our lives, we retain the language and habits of our native region and family of origin. Should we return to our home after a long absence, we quickly revert to its familiar speech and practices. Our deep memory is reflected in old stories and words and speech patterns. This familiarity runs like an underground river and accompanies us wherever we go. Not only do we remember, we are incorporated into and made part of a greater memory. In remembering and recollecting, we are in turn gathered up and re-collected. Today we remember Mary, a small figure travelling the country roads to visit Elizabeth. All the great pronouncements and dreams of the prophets point to this time when the Lord s words to Mary would be gathered and fulfilled. The memories of her people are alive in her, and memories of her nourish our own living faith. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
