3 November 19, rd Sunday in Ordinary Time From the Pastor s Desk Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, It is hard to believe that Thanksgiving is upon us, it seems that that past five months have gone by too quickly. Of course, as Catholics, we come together every Sunday, and other days during the week, to celebrate Thanksgiving, which is derived from the Greek eukharistos, to offer gratefully, and is where we have our word Eucharist. (Thank you Gus Portokalos.) In this Sacrament of the Altar, we symbolically offer ourselves, in the bread and wine we bring forward, accompanied by the offertory collection (the money), in the expectation that we will be transformed in this Sacrament. That is where the symbolism ends though, because what follows is not a symbolic change, or just a way we show unity, by sharing bread and wine. What follows is the deepest reality we can ever imagine; the priest, raising the bread and the wine, speaks in the person of Christ (In Persona Christi) and what still appears as bread and wine is now the Real Presence of that same Christ. A few weeks ago, there was a letter to the editor in one of the papers that I read, and as the writer was speaking about the Reformation and modern Catholic and Protestant dialogue, he made a great mistake in reference to the Eucharist. His statement was that no one cared whether it was Consubstantiation or Transubstantiation anymore; which was a misstatement on his part since I very much care. First, let me explain for those who may have forgotten, or those who never learned: As Catholics, along with the Orthodox, we believe in Transubstantiation, in regard to the Eucharist, that is that even though what has been offered as bread and wine, still appears to be bread and wine, it is in fact the Real Presence of Jesus Christ, that is His Body and Blood. Consubstantiation, in regard to the Eucharist, is that there is no change to the actual bread and wine, only that Christ s Presence somehow accompanies it as it is consumed by the recipient. It may seem very little difference, however, there are people much smarter than I, who have written at length on the topic. At the heart of this difference is the Gospel accounts, as well as epistles, where we are told that Jesus took bread and wine and pronounced it His Body and Blood. For two millennia, the Church has celebrated the Mass with the understanding that what was being received, what was being revered on the Altar, in tabernacles and in monstrances, was the actual Body of Christ. After a millennia and a half, Martin Luther, subscribed to a doctrine that had already been rejected by the Church, and insisted that the Eucharist was actually symbolic, and that the Presence of Christ, if it was received in the celebration of the Eucharist, was not really connected to the reception of the host, but only accompanied it. Once again, I apologize for simplifying the matter, but I am trying to fit this on one page. As time progressed, the idea of the Eucharist as a symbol among Protestants really began to take over, to a point that what has been offered on the altar, is not reserved in a tabernacle, or even revered as the Body of Christ, but returned to the plastic container from which it initially emerged. Leaving aside for the moment Validity of Sacraments, including Holy Orders, there is the question of personal relationship with the Resurrected Christ. Do I want to receive a piece of bread that is only a symbol? Or do I want to enter into an intimacy with Jesus Christ, and with those who receive this same Eucharist, recognizing that I am transformed in receiving this gift, to become what I have received, the Body of Christ. Flannery O'Connor is often quoted as saying, when told that the Eucharist is a good symbol, 'Well, if it's a symbol, to hell with it.' This was not to disparage the Blessed Sacrament, but to bring others to recognize that this is much more than a symbol, it is the Reality of Christ in our midst, in the most perfect way possible. As we gather together this coming week, to celebrate with friends and family, symbolically giving thanks for everything God has given to us, lets take time to recognize the reality that He has given us in Himself, through Word and Sacrament, through the Church, both Domestic and Universal, and in all the ways He continues to reveal Himself. This week s scriptures use images of the harvest, family life, pregnancy, and investment to describe the abundant harvest in the reign of God. We discover that sharing the gifts we have been given brings eternal rewards for everyone. In the Gospel parable a master entrusts his possessions to three servants before going on a journey. Each is given some talents. What they do with those talents determines what the master will do with them when he returns. How about us? What are we doing with our talents? For us, there are the four standard prayers, three for Masses with Children, and the most recent addition, the former Swiss Eucharistic Prayer with four alternative forms (now known as the Eucharistic Prayer for Masses for Various Needs and Occasions). We also have two Eucharistic Prayers for Masses of Reconciliation. The source for these two prayers is the request by many bishops for a special prayer for the Holy Year of Originally, the committee in charge was commissioned to write a single prayer, but the theme proved so rich that it gave rise to two. The first is based on and develops biblical texts on reconciliation. The second starts with the experience of living in today s fractured world, and how the Spirit calls us to reconciliation and peace. Not everyone was happy with all this creativity, saying that if too many were published, it would be difficult for the Vatican to control further requests. Everyone thought the pope would put strict limits on the prayers, but in the end he said he was willing to open doors that had long been closed. Although he approved them for a period of only three years, they were never formally removed from the Sacramentary and have been incorporated into the new Roman Missal. Rev. James Field, Copyright J.
