3 September 16, th Sunday in Ordinary Time LISTENING AND RESPONDING There are three interwoven themes in today s readings: listening to God, faith vs. good works, and losing our life in order to find it. How are they related? The Suffering Servant of Isaiah undergoes much distress and ridicule, but is able to bear it because he has listened to the promptings of God day after day. The psalm tells us that God listens, too. God hears our prayers for help and is always ready to save us. As our faith deepens, so does our desire to do the works of justice and charity that build up the reign of God. God directs our actions in ways we often cannot see, and we don t always see the results. We are called upon in faith to trust that what we do is enough, and that willingness to listen to God s promptings will lead us in the right way. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Andrew Kim Taegŏn and Paul Chŏng Ha-sang and Companions Friday: St. Matthew Saturday: Blessed Virgin Mary TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In this country, we don t name our churches The Fourth Avenue Catholic Church, but rather seek a patron saint or mystery of faith. We inherit this tradition from an old Roman custom via medieval England. Interestingly, that has not been the practice elsewhere, and parishes abroad often do carry just the name of the neighborhood. In Ireland, the Roman (English) practices didn t take hold, and so churches are known simply by the street they are on, or by a nickname. Saint Francis of Assisi in Dublin is often called Adam and Eve after a pub in the same street. The pub sign is an interesting carving of our first parents, so they become patrons by default. Increasingly in the United States, we are seeing a familiar European pattern emerge when a few churches, each bearing the name of a patron saint or mystery, are gathered into one parish that bears a different name. Thus, we might hear of a parish of Midvalley City comprised of Saint Mary, Saint Francis, and Saint Ursula churches. Once a church has been consecrated, its name may not normally be changed. Therefore, when parishes are merged, a new name is given to the parish, which may or may not be that of a heavenly patron, but the church buildings retain their names. In the process, we have lost sight of some worthy patrons of old, but have also seen new parishes open dedicated to twentieth-century saints like Edith Stein, Katharine Drexel, and Mother Teresa. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

4 September 16th, 2018, Twenty Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time From the Pastor s Desk Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Over the past twelve years, I have heard the same sentiment repeated by various people involved in parish ministry, whether employees, volunteers, or those on committees, it can be summed up as I never knew this side of the Church existed. To be clear, I am not referring to the sex abuse scandal that continues to expose the failures of those entrusted with our children and youth, but the more mundane things that are a regular aspect of parish life. Just before I went off on vacation, I was informed of several calls into the office, requesting sponsor certificates. For those unfamiliar with these forms, they have been put out by the diocese, to replace all of the different ones used by individual parishes, to establish the suitability of a person to stand in as a Godparent or Confirmation sponsor. On the backside of the sheet the criteria for this position is listed, specifically: a baptized and confirmed Catholic, who, if married, is in a marriage recognized by the Church, and who lives their faith as an example for the child. While there are some parishes who have failed to copy both sides of this form, for whatever reasons, it is clear that a person should be living their faith, if they want to be an example to someone else. But in many cases, the idea of a Godparent has been cheapened by modern society, into a catchphrase, or into something removed from Faith. While this is not the only time that we as a society remove God from what is supposed to be Sacred, one of the most prolific aspects of secularizing sacraments is Marriage outside of its proper forum, it often follows the others. One of the people that called, and I know that our parish staff is excellent, going through great lengths to accommodate people, stated that no one in their family met the criteria to be a Godparent. (Once again, the criteria is: a Baptized and Confirmed Catholic, who if married, is in a marriage recognized by the Church, who practices their Faith.) When offered alternatives by the parish staff, they responded that the Catholic Church was to rigid and that was why people were leaving, and that they would have to find another denomination to have the child baptized in. While I grieve the loss of even one person from Christ s Church, the fact is these people had already left it, whether they realized it or not. If someone approached me and said, Father, we d like you to stand in as Godfather for little Sol at his Bris, yes, I would be honored, but I would also realize that it was not only inappropriate, but impossible. First reason, I m not Jewish, and therefore would not be able to stand up for child as an example of what a good Jewish person should be, secondly, it would be against my own Faith, as a Christian committed to the Good News of Jesus Christ. If an atheist asked me to stand as a witness for their child, I could not in good conscience publicly stand and deny my Faith in God, in order to accommodate a friend. Why is it that we, as Catholics, are called to discount or dismiss those things we hold sacred, in order to accommodate those who do not. Of course, on the surface, it may seem like a bunch of bureaucratic nonsense, only put in place to make life more difficult for some people, or even to raise money for the vast treasury that is cleverly hidden beneath the rectory, and guarded by a dragon. But these guidelines are there to safeguard those things that we hold Sacred, which actually means separate from the secular. As Catholics, we are a Sacramental people, something which has distinguished us from our Protestant brothers and sisters for 500 years; but continues to unite us with the Orthodox churches, with whom we share 2000 years of unbroken Christian Tradition. By their nature, the Seven Sacraments reveal God entering into our world, and making Himself present to those participating in these most important events in the life of the Church. 5 When a person is Baptized, God is present, and through the priest, deacon, a nurse in a neonatal ICU, or whoever it is that is celebrating the Sacrament, God is forever imprinting His mark on their soul. In Confession or the Sacrament of the Sick, the priest, standing in the Person of Christ, forgives that persons sins, as only God can do. In Marriage, the couple are joined as husband and wife, reflecting the Love of Christ for His Church, and the Love of the Church for Christ, and Christ is there with them. Most perfectly, when a priest takes bread and wine and speaks the words of consecration, Christ is most fully present in the Sacrament of His Body and Blood. What are times when God enters into relationship with human beings are not just special events, they are Sacred, and what is Sacred should never be debased; not for convenience, not because someone does not want to be the bad guy. What we believe, what we say we believe, what we practice, is a reflection of Christ s presence in the world, and we need to live that witness and not let the world diminish the great gifts that Christ keeps multiplying in our lives.
