3 April 14, 2019 Palm Sunday From the Pastor s Deskw cond Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Those who are around me on a regular basis, know that I am very prone to earworms, which for those unfamiliar with the term, are songs that get stuck in one s head, and remain playing on a loop, until drastic measures are taken; such as singing in public. As I was writing this column, the one song that kept playing over and over was That s Life, made famous by Francis Albert Sinatra, my Uncle Hank s favourite singer. The particular lines were from the beginning verse You're riding high in April, Shot down in May ; which I hope are not some prophetic message for myself. However, the idea of being thrown down so quickly, after being on top, enjoying popularity and all of the best the world has to offer one minute, only to be rejected the next definitely reflects the week we are entering. Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalem on Sunday, was marked by what can only be described as fanfare. Palms were cut down to be laid in the streets, along with clothing, all of which was intended to keep the dust from kicking up in the face of Jesus; which is a radical departure from the dirt and filth of the streets which Jesus face was to be pressed down in come Friday. At the beginning of the week, the Messiah entered Jerusalem riding on the back of a donkey, by its end, the burden of the Cross would be forced upon his back, to be carried through these same streets. For His arrival into the City of David, water would be splashed on the streets, helping to control dust, as He is lead to the outskirts of the city on Friday, it was His own blood pouring from His back and head which mingled with Jerusalem s soil. Whether it was the same people in the crowd which welcomed Jesus, who spat on Him and called for His Crucifixion, we cannot know in this world, but we can guess that there were at least some in both crowds. As Jesus came into this Holy City, there were faces He recognized, people who had come to hear His words, here in Jerusalem and throughout the Holy Land, some were devoted followers, friends, even those who knew Him as a child. At the end of the week, it was His Mother, the young John, who had followed Him from the beginning, and Mary of Magdala, whom He freed from the possession of demons, standing with Him as He died. Others looked on from a distance, judging for themselves how far it was needed to keep safe, when days earlier they had reached out to touch His tunic, or even those hands which were now pierced through by Roman spikes. On Sunday, Jesus entered Jerusalem, knowing what would happen to Him, while those around Him had visions of making Him King, to rule over the people Israel, bringing liberation from the oppression of the Romans, and re-establishing the Davidic Kingdom. On Friday, Christ was hanging naked on a tree, condemned by those who sought to rule themselves, under the authority of Rome, or by their own reading of Sacred Scriptures. But in the mockery, Truth was displayed over the very instrument of His execution, as the criminal sentence proclaimed for all to see, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews. But that was only a small piece of His Kingdom, and those who sought to keep control of earthly parts of one kingdom or empire would find out, while their reigns come to an end, His Kingdom endures forever. As quick as was His fall from earthly glory and popular acclaim, over the next days, what would occur would be undone, and the world would never be the same; even those who had run in fear would be filled with the courage that could only come from the Easter Event. My brothers and sisters, we all experience those low points in our lives, even those times when we don t think we can make it through another moment, but we are not alone. We have a loving savior, who knows what it is to suffer, who through Hi suffering has given us a new life; Who through His blood has washed us clean and freed us from Sin. No matter how hard our life is, Jesus Christ is with us, at every moment, and through our encounter with the Resurrected Christ, we know that our own sufferings, difficulties and hardships, will be transformed in the light of the Resurrection. Pax, Father Henry

Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright J. S. Paluch C

5 April 14, 2019 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord THE STORY OF OUR REDEMPTION We begin the final week of Lent with these familiar readings. This year, we hear the Passion from the Gospel of Luke. These readings for Palm Sunday and the Passion used to be read on successive Sundays. Now they are combined into a single feast, so that we may see the whole sweep of the glory and the suffering played out. Jesus accepts the adulation of the crowd, the foreshadowing of his glory in the Resurrection. He bids farewell to his disciples in his last Passover, and forgives his tormentors as he dies on the cross. Later this week, we enter the Holy Triduum of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday, when the whole story of our redemption will play out once again. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Only a bishop can consecrate chrism, pure olive oil infused with rich fragrance, so this liturgy is a sign of the unity of the local Church and the bishop s ministry to all who will be baptized and confirmed in our parishes in the coming year. Chrism is also used in the ordination of priests and bishops and the consecration of new altars. Two other sacramental oils, the unscented olive oil for catechumens and for the sick, will be blessed in the same liturgy and transported carefy to every parish by the beginning of the Triduum. Remember when Noah s dove returned with the sign of the world s rebirth? The dove carried an olive branch, a pledge that God was breathing the world to life again. Yet olives require human nurture. Olives are inedible unless they are cured by human labor. Olive trees grow on sunny slopes, away from the shade of city walls, so they can only be properly tended, cured, and laboriously pressed in peace time. The Chrism Mass with its olive oils expresses God s deepest desires for us, and our resolve to place our lives in service to God s saving, healing, loving plan. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. ESSENTIAL REDUCTION All my theology is reduced to this narrow compass: Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners. Archibald Alexander
