3 March11, th Sunday of Lent From the Pastor s Desk Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, There are so many things going on in our parish, even just this weekend, it is amazing. First off, we have Fr. Paul Farin, from Cross Catholic Outreach, celebrating Masses for us this weekend, and sharing his experiences in serving Christ, by serving the poor. Because he will be speaking about his mission I will not say too much about it, only we are fortunate to have him here. After Masses on Sunday, at 2pm, we are blessed to be the only place on Long Island hosting the Relics of the Passion. This is a unique opportunity to spend some time in the presence of relics tied to the Passion of our Lord, as well as time in prayer; immediately following the presentation, we will be in the Presence of Christ, during Eucharistic Adoration. Our Lenten journey continues with our Friday Lenten Pasta Dinners, followed by the Alpha program and Stations of the Cross, as we continue through our final week of Lent. Yes, it came up all of a sudden, next Sunday is Palm Sunday, and we will enter into Holy Week, as we prepare for the Triduum, and Christ s Passion and Death. While I am on the topic of Christ s suffering, somebody recently brought up to me, the idea that we, as a Church, need to get past the idea of suffering, that we should just hop on the great big rainbow of good feelings and eat as much cotton candy theology as we can. There are multiple things wrong with that, but I will only address four at this point: 1) There is suffering in reality. While it is unpleasant, and we would love to live in a world where there is no suffering, that is not reality; our lives are a mixture of pleasures and pains, and a mix of many other experiences along the way. There are many friends and relatives who I would love to be surrounded by, but they have gone on, and the next time I will see them is at the Resurrection. To take away the grief and suffering I experienced, and continue to experience, at their loss, would be to cheapen the love that I had, and have, for them. Connected to that is 2) the fact that love requires sacrifice, and sacrifice entails suffering to various degrees. When we say we love someone, or something, that means that we have to make changes to our lives, in order to show the love we have for them. If a man and woman meet in college, and they fall in love, that means that they want to be around one another, and this probably means spending less time with others. If their lifestyle upon marriage still resembles life in a college Frat house, there are probably serious issues on the horizon, especially when they make that conversion from husband and wife, to mother and father. If someone insists that the crib is taking up too much room, and the kegerator (that s a refrigerator for beer kegs) really needs that spot, there s a definite lack of sacrifice and love. 3) Love cannot be selfish. When we are so caught up in ourselves, when the focus is so completely inward, and I am not referring to introspection, the other is lost. That is why sexual intercourse, outside the bonds of marriage, is inherently disordered, because the promise of giving oneself completely to the other is missing, is false. Objectifying another human being, treating them only as something to bring oneself pleasure, is to miss the beauty of the person, as made in the image and likeness of God; it is to discard their fundamental dignity as a human being. Love requires giving oneself to an other, and in the case of our Faith, The Other. Which brings me to 4) What we are entering into on Holy Week, though it is not restricted to this yearly observance, is the celebration of Love. Not as the world has come to know it, or as various people try to cheapen it (see number 3), but as God has shown it to be. Many people have bandied about the phrase love is love to defend various practices, but what they are talking about is shallow affect, maybe a desire for Love, and at worst a perversion of that desire to Love and be Loved, into something disordered. Is love love? It is definitely not Love. As God is the source of Love Itself, this Love is reflected in our lives, in our actions towards one another, and in the action He took for us; to take on our flesh, to make Himself known to us, and to ultimately redeem us, with the price of His blood on the Cross. That is Love. So, no, I do not want to ride a rainbow or fill up on cotton candy, because it is a cheap imitation of the Faith that has been handed down to me; it is a shadow of the Love caught up in the Sacrifice of Christ, in His giving Himself for me, and for you. Pax, Father Henry

4 Fifth Sunday of Lent M arch 18, 2018 SAVED BY GOD S LOVE Because the people broke the old covenant, God promised a new covenant, not in the blood of oxen and other animals, but in the blood of the Son, Jesus Christ. This new covenant, foreseen from afar by Jeremiah and the prophets, was not to be engraved on stone, or written on paper, but carved on our hearts, so that we might know God intimately. Not by keeping many laws are we to be saved, but by the love of God, living and real in our hearts through the sacrifice of Christ. Our Eucharist is the pledge of that indwelling of Christ, and of our response of praise and thanksgiving to God for the mercy, love, and kindness shown to us in forgiving our sins and cleansing our hearts of everything evil. God issues this invitation to intimacy by offering us the chance to have our sufferings transformed into the perfect love of the Savior, who first loved us. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
