3 January 27, 2019 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time From the Pastor s Deskw cond Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Years ago, when I lived in Albany, I found an old rocking chair destined for the trash, and with some work, restored it to a usable condition, and placed it on the back porch of the house I lived in. For the next number of months, that rocking chair became part of the communal furniture, a preferred seat when occupying the porch, and when I moved a year later, no thought of bringing that chair with me occurred, it was as much a part of that house as the porch itself. Many have commented on the rocking chair being a uniquely American invention, because even when we are at rest, there is still a need to be moving. Over the years there have been other projects to occupy my time and my thoughts, as well as different diversions, some of which have been beneficial, others I could probably look at as a waste of time and energy. One diversion which I have found is a total waste of time, yet somehow I still find myself drawn in, is playing solitaire on the computer. While I tell myself that I will only play a game or two, maybe even say it is to get the mental juices flowing, the reality is that nothing is accomplished by moving electronic cards around a screen. Because it was such a distraction I deleted it off my old laptop, but I believe Microsoft has integrated it so deeply into my new one that to delete it would set off a self-destruct sequence. While this is all part of living in a world defined by technological advances, it is also part of the dehumanizing of society. Instead of being a tool to assist me in getting information and putting together projects that need to be done, my computer runs the risk of being something that distracts me from what I need to do. We can go from writing this column, to playing a hand or two of spider solitaire, to checking Facebook, and then over to YouTube, and before I realize it, four hours have gone by, and nothing is done. Not only that, but screen time has replaced real time, and I find I have spent four hours alone, not having interacted with anybody. While social media can be an excellent tool to keep in touch with old friends, and it has been a blessing to me to be able to face time friends overseas, and keep in touch with what is going on, it is not a substitute for real time spent with real people. In fact, it has helped to dehumanize many people, as the incivility online, brought on by an imagined anonymity, has spilled over to interactions between people offline. Thinking back to the time I spent sitting in that rocking chair, looking at the leaves on the trees, maybe caught up in conversation with someone else on that porch, I can see that nothing was produced, but it was not time wasted. We built up human relationships through conversation, we built up our own humanity by taking time to relax and contemplate the world around us, and we even built up our relationships with God, even if we didn t realize it, by entering into His creation, observing it, and being a part of its highest realization, humanity itself. Think about it. Human beings were made in the image and likeness of God. God became man in the Person of Jesus Christ, and shared our humanity, elevating it through that sharing, and then glorifying it in the Resurrection, a gift, which we all have been promised at our baptism, awaiting us when He returns. We even share in the humanity of Christ, offered to us under the appearance of bread and wine, but which we know to be the Body and Blood that Jesus offered on the Altar of the Cross; a reality we partake in through our own human bodies. While we have become accustomed to the idea that we have to be doing something at all times, in order to be productive, and that sitting idle is something we do in order to be passively entertained, whether by television or other media, the truth is we need time to stop and be human. The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. (Mark 2:28) While we observe the Sabbath, which is Sunday for Christians, as a day of praise and worship, we also recognize it as a day of rest; not to fulfill some random rule, but because God knows we have to decompress from all the things that we do over the course of a week. Even our weekends and vacations have become endurance races, fitting as many things as possible into a limited scope of time, rather than enjoying the gifts that God has given us. Maybe, just maybe, we can turn off the electronics for a day, forget about the schedules, enjoy supper as a family, and then sit back in a rocking chair and enjoy the gift of God s creation, specifically the people He has put into our lives. Pax, Fr. Henry
4 January 27, 2019 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Tercer Domingo del Tiempo Ordina- TIME The holidays are well behind us; the year stretches out ahead. And what sort of year will it be? To judge by the words of Jesus in today s Gospel, it will be a year acceptable to the Lord. And Jesus surely didn t mean only the next three hundred sixty-five days facing his listeners at that time. When Jesus announced the arrival of God s favor, it was a message for all time, for every year. Similarly, we read today in Nehemiah how the people gathered with solemnity to hear God s word as though for the first time. They listened, and then fell to the ground and wept. But the prophet said, Today is holy... do not be sad, and do not weep. The year acceptable to the Lord is this year. The day that is holy is this day. The time to listen is now. What sort of year will you have? What sort of day? God s help is always here. What you do with each day can be holy and acceptable to the Lord if you but listen to and act on God s word. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co..
