3 November 18th, 2018, Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time From the Pastor s Desk Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, From time to time, Gus Portokalos, from My Big Fat Greek Wedding, sounds of in my head saying Give me any word, and I will show you its Greek roots. In the case of this week s column, that word is appropriately Eucharist, which if we look at it comes from the late Middle English, which is derived from the Old French word eucariste, coming from the Late Latin eucharistia, which of course comes from the ecclesiastical Greek eukharistia. This word, eukaristia, in turn comes from Greek eukharistos grateful, broken down as eu meaning well and kharizesthai translating as offer graciously or as we would say in English thanksgiving ; so there you go. Of course, this week is our national celebration of Thanksgiving, a time when we gather together as family and friends, recognizing the gifts that God has given to us as a nation, as a people. In gratitude those of us who have received much over the past year, contribute to those who may not be as fortunate as we are, either financially or through the gift of the same food that we share out with those gathered around our tables. It is always a beautiful symbol, when people offer up what they have received, so that others may also enjoy the gift of food, but it is especially noticeable at Thanksgiving, when the American nation fulfills what at its heart is Sacred. Every day, although most of us only come on Sunday, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is offered in Catholic and Orthodox churches throughout the world, where ordinary bread and wine become the real presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. From the hands of the people who have brought gifts, whether it is the monetary offering, food, or themselves, bread and wine is taken by the priest, and through the words of consecrations, the priest, who stands in the person of Christ, what is ordinary becomes Divine. Receiving this precious gift of Christ s flesh and blood from the altar, we His people are transformed too, into the Body of Christ visible on earth. We receive, we are transformed, and from what we have received we give. A conversation I was involved in not long ago, centered around the idea of wealth and charity, as well as various programs that come from government versus those that emerge from communities and private groups. While there are those who will forever wave the banner of increasing government programs, my experience has led me to believe that only community based programs will take care of the real needs of people. While it is true that the United States government is the largest contributor of foreign aid for any government, it is the contributions of individuals and private corporations that really shine as an example to the rest of the world. There is also a great connection between American Catholics and the ability of the Church to fulfill Its mission in the world, as U.S. Catholics have been the largest contributors to the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith and other charitable groups within the Church. For those wondering what difference it makes, the Catholic Church is the single largest charitable institution in the world. From what we receive we give, but we are not able to give what we have not first received, that is the heart of our Eucharistic life. Because we are called to give thanks in a special way this week, I wanted to take the opportunity to thank all of those who have contributed so much to the life of the parish, through volunteering, especially in the parish outreach program, and financially supporting our mission here in Patchogue. In a special way I want to thank Majestic foods for their contributions to the parish food pantry, which helps our parishioners and others throughout the area. Also, we were fortunate to have the men and women from Long Island Needs A Dragstrip, provide food for our pantry from May through October, and also coming through this week with food for many of the families in the community, so that they can have a Thanksgiving meal with their families. We are a Eucharistic people living in Communion with one another, we are called to be grateful for the many gifts God has given, and continues to give to us, and to respond by reaching out to our brothers and sisters in need. Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving. Pax, Fr. Henry

4 33 Sunday in Ordinary Time November 18, 2018 SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time Wednesday: The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Thursday: St. Cecilia; Thanksgiving Day Friday: St. Clement I; St. Columban; Blessed Miguel Agustín Pro Saturday: St. Andrew Dũng-Lạc and Companions ENCOURAGEMENT This Sunday s Gospel is our final selection from Mark for this liturgical year. It is taken from the end of Jesus teaching in Jerusalem immediately preceding the account of his arrest and passion. In it Jesus gives his disciples hope to sustain them through his passion and death and any persecution or suffering that they would encounter after his resurrection. The words from the book of Daniel also provided hope and encouragement to the people of Daniel s time. The encouragement in these scriptures is meant for us as well, for none of us will escape tribulation in our lives. Followers of Jesus will be able to endure suffering with joyful hope, knowing that Christ s love will lead us along the way of discipleship and give us eternal life with God.
