Turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, and corn were on the menu in November. The December food lineup substituted roast beef for turkey, and my father would pour a little sip of sparkling wine for each of us kids a once -a-year treat. My mother always made a little extra, because, she said, you never know when a guest might come by. Sure enough, in one year or another, one of us would invite someone or a neighbor would stop in. There was always plenty, and we would feast and tell stories into the night. Those memories and the ones I make with my own family now are as close as I can come to the banquet Isaiah and Jesus describe, and I m sure they re no match for that great feast in heaven. But I think I know why Isaiah and Jesus use the metaphor. There is something sensual and earthy about gathering around a table with family and friends. It begins with the smells wafting through the house, the noise in the kitchen, the setting of the table with more than the everyday plates. We dress a little more carefully. We are preparing for our family banquet. No matter what food is on the table, we ll be fed with love that draws us in and accepts us simply because we are family. Love is the gift we bring to the table, and love is the gift we receive in the act of breaking bread with one another. Our love feast needs our care and attention. And God s feast deserves no less Liguori Publications, One Liguori Drive, Liguori, MO All rights reserved Liguori.org. GOD S PLAN IN MY GIFT OF SINGING: PART 1 - THE EARLY YEARS By: Garth Horn Phase One For as long as I remember I have been a singer. Mom would tell me that at 4 years old I would stand in front of the television and sing and pretend to play guitar when watching Tommy Hunter singing and playing his guitar on the Country Hoedown Show. Apparently, Mom called me A little Performer. Mom and Dad both played guitar and one day I remember holding my Mom s acoustic guitar on my lap to just strum the strings. I would hold my ear close to the sound hole for a louder sound. One time I picked out the first couple bars of the Bonanza Theme song. Bonanza was a popular western television show. Wow I thought I just played a tune... Read the rest from Garth as well as other blogs from Cathedral personnel at: holyfamilycathedral.ca/blogs

9 Roman Catholic Archdiocese of REGINA OFFICE OF THE ARCHBISHOP 445 Broad Street N., Regina, SK, CANADA S4R 2X8 Tel: (306) Fax: (306) Letter from the Bishops of Saskatchewan To Catholic School Boards and Catholic Parents Concerning the Proposed Publicly Funded HPV Vaccination Program October 5, 2017 Dear Catholic school boards and Catholic parents in Saskatchewan, We, the bishops of Saskatchewan, sincerely regret the confusion we caused in our letter of Sept. 25, 2017, on the government funded school-based offering of the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine. Over the past days we have welcomed and appreciated conversations with health professionals, representatives of health organizations, and concerned parents, and would now offer the following as a means of clarification: 1. In making decisions regarding vaccinations, we again invite the faithful to two underlying considerations: a) that parents (in the case of minors) and individual adults are responsible to make informed decisions according to their own conscience, formed by scientific findings and by their faith; b) that decisions regarding vaccinations are not only personal, but also a matter of public health and the common good. 2. In conversations with health professionals, we have been introduced to numerous studies which document the effectiveness of the HPV vaccine against cervical cancer, but also against other forms of cancer, including throat cancer, which has been on the rise in recent years. We understand that the vaccine is generally considered to be safe, and is widely regarded today as an effective cancer prevention strategy for boys and girls alike. Links to these studies are provided below. 3. The HPV vaccine is not a cure-all against everything. As church leaders, we stress that chastity is and will always be a virtue worth proposing and modelling to our young people. It is a way of life that brings value and joy. At the same time, we live in a world where non-consensual or regrettable sexual encounters occur. We were encouraged by research suggesting that the HPV vaccines are not increasing risky sexual behavior ( As ever, we are grateful for the unconditional love that is modeled by parents for their children, and with you, strive to support the best decisions for our young people s faith, health and education. Yours in Christ, Most Rev. Donald Bolen Most Rev. Albert Thevenot Most Rev. Murray Chatlain Archbishop of Regina Bishop of Prince Albert Archbishop of Keewatin-Le Pas Very Rev. Fr.
