A Call to Fidelity My Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Nativity of St. John the Baptist - June 24th, 2018 Today, in the liturgical cycle of the Church year, we celebrate the Nativity of St. John the Baptist. My first Mass as a priest after my ordination 23 years ago was this Mass. In our celebration we remember and reflect upon the life of John the Baptist: his birth, his place in the history of Christianity, his perseverance and his ultimate death for the sake of the Good News. The life of this great Saint reminds all of us that each one of us are called to herald the Good News of Jesus Christ. It matters not what our gifts and talents are but rather the inclination of our hearts in promoting this Good News even to the point of being challenged. Many times it becomes somewhat unpopular to promote Christian values and the ministry of the Church: we shy away from proclaiming our faith; we grow silent when there are unjust attacks against the Church or her leadership; we experience agitation when we fail to speak out against injustice and we can let our faith and beliefs remain a private thing - not something to be shared. The life and death of St. John the Baptist is a testimony to the fidelity to a life rooted in God. It was not an easy message for St. John and his call to conversion and repentance was not widely accepted. His challenge of the status quo and his insistence that we reach the ideals that God desires was a direct cause of his own death. And yet, his loyalty and faithfulness to the end was crowned with victory and glory. Today we are called to share in the fidelity of St. John. We are called to proclaim a message of love and peace, we are to speak out against injustice, we are to uphold the great gift of life from conception until natural death, we are to challenge the status quo when its values are not in line with God's desires, and we are to take care of those who are less fortunate. Yes, such speaking out may place us in difficult situations. It may create challenging experiences, but it will create a deep sense of peace within as we strive to live faithfully the beautiful life God has given to us. St. John the Baptist.... Pray for us. Blessings to you and your loved ones. Fr. David FOOD DRIVE FOR GUADALUPE PANTRY Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish is seeking food donations for their emergency pantry to help needy families in our city. By: David Polzen Lessons from Baba Some days okay, most days, I can be so easily distracted and caught up in the hectic pace, the to-do lists and the anxieties of the world around me that I miss out on the beauty and blessings occurring around me at every moment. I thank God that God does not give up on us wanderers and continually sends the Holy Spirit to nudge us along. Here is today s nudging story: I was sitting in the pew of a small Saskatchewan town church with family and my Baba. It was the day after we gathered as family to celebrate Baba s 106th birthday. It was a great celebration but at 106 she is not quite up to staying up to celebrate that long. This was the first time in many, many years that I can recall that my Baba went to bed before me Read the rest from David as well as other blogs from Cathedral personnel at: holyfamilycathedral.ca/blogs

4 CATHOLIC WOMEN S LEAGUE Inspired by the Spirit, Women Respond to God s Call: We are in need of a couple more funeral conveners. One of the services that the CWL offer is preparing lunches for the many funerals that are held at the Cathedral. In the past we had about five conveners who were responsible for finding workers, preparing and cleaning up afterwards. Thank you to those who are doing this great service and to those who have decided to retire. Your many years of service is greatly appreciated. If you think that you would like to be part of this team or for more information...please give Alice or Avis a call. As the warm weather is finally upon us let us try to take some time to relax and enjoy it before we realize that the fall is once again upon us. Mark your calendars for the first meeting of the Fall Wednesday, September 12th at 7:00 pm. Hope we see many of you again and encourage any woman over the age of 16 to come and learn about the CWL and meet this vibrant group of women. Please pray: for our priests as they prepare to be part of new parishes, may the Lord guide and help them as they shepherd new flocks; for all levels of governments, may they keep their constituents interests always in the forefront as they make decisions that will affect everyone; for vocations, may we see an increase in the interest for entry into the priesthood and religious life. STEWARDSHIP CORNER Weekly Stewardship Reflection: From the International Catholic Stewardship Council Today we celebrate the birth of St. John the Baptist. This prophet, who practiced austerity in the desert, proclaimed the kingdom of God, a coming judgment, and baptism as a sign of repentance. With deep humility, John directed attention not to himself but to Jesus. John s attitude was, He must increase, I must decrease (John 3:30). John s birth, days after the summer solstice when daylight hours begin to decrease, contrasts with Jesus birth days after the winter solstice, heralding daylight s increase. Like John the Baptist, stewards turn attention away from themselves and towards Jesus. The stewardship question for us is whether or not we ourselves are prepared to decrease and allow Jesus to increase in our hearts, minds, words and actions. 9 Roman Catholic Diocese of Saskatoon OFFICE OF THE BISHOP 123 Nelson Rd Phone: Saskatoon SK S7S 1H1 Fax: Toll free: June 18, 2018 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, This week s Supreme Court of Canada s ruling on the Trinity Western University law school is of great concern for all who support faith-based education in our country. I am writing to echo Vancouver Archbishop J. Michael Miller, CSB, in expressing disappointment in the court decision that has the potential to undermine freedom of religion, conscience, and association in Canada. As Archbishop Miller stated June 15: The decision runs counter to Canada s tradition of balancing rights and freedoms, and the implications of this decision for constitutional freedoms in Canada are severe. I also join with Archbishop Miller and others who agree with the ruling s dissenting justices, who pointed out that the decision betrays the promise of our Constitution that rights limitations must be demonstrably justified and who noted that the law societies powers are not absolute with respect to approving law programs. As Archbishop Miller said: Not only is freedom of conscience and religion a fundamental principle recognized in international human rights law, it is the first freedom guaranteed in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Perhaps more disturbing is that the court has undermined rights actually written in the Charter in favour of unwritten charter values, Archbishop Miller added. In an earlier 2001 TWU teachers college ruling, the Supreme Court respected the country s social and legal tradition of attempting to balance competing rights, rather than giving preference to one right over another, as noted by Archbishop Miller. However with this latest decision about the law school, the court has moved away from Canada s historic tradition of reconciling competing rights, and closer to a prioritization of rights, essentially ruling some rights are more important than others.

10 The decision is confounding on many levels. As TWU president Bob Kuhn recently pointed out, In a very long complex ruling, with four sets of reasons, eight of nine judges agree that Trinity Western University's religious freedom is violated - but the majority still uphold the law societies' decision not to approve the law school. Dr. Andrew Bennett, director of the Cardus Religious Freedom Institute, stated that the Supreme Court decision, has consigned the fundamental right to freedom of conscience and religion to second class status. This upholds a narrow understanding of diversity in which people of faith are relegated to the private sphere. Dr. Bennett also stated that now Canadians of all religious traditions, will have less latitude to dissent from majority opinions on social issues that clash with their beliefs. I would encourage all to consider the implications of this ruling. As Archbishop Miller pointed out: The Court s willingness to disregard the Charter of Rights and Freedoms means the threat of state influence expanding beyond its authority is increasing. The Court is allowing governments and governmentmandated regulators to decide which beliefs, and values are favoured in society, narrowing pluralism and freedom of conscience, beliefs, and thought in a serious way. Along with Archbishop Miller, and many other concerned Canadians, I believe that the Court has erred in breaking with precedent, threatening fundamental human rights in Canada. I would ask you to join me in praying that our social and legal tradition will continue to affirm the conscience and religious rights of all Canadians and the ability of all to participate in the civil life of society. As Dr. Bennett states, Now more than ever we need a robust and clear defense of freedom of conscience and religion and public faith. Please continue to advocate for public policies that respect and uphold the clear and broad protections of conscience and religious freedom that are a bedrock of Canadian law. I conclude by thanking our One God and Creator, who sustains our lives with such love and blessing, and calls us to promote justice and freedom in a country blessed with such diversity. Sincerely in our One God, Most Reverend Mark A. Hagemoen Bishop of Saskatoon
