1 CARROLLIAN NEWS January 2018 GRAND KNIGHT S REPORT Happy New Year gentlemen. I look forward to another great year with the Knights. A huge Thanks goes out to John Dudzik for spending a majority of his day preparing our Christmas Party meal. Too bad we didn t have much of a turn out. We collected $200 to be given to the 18th Street Neighborhood Center. Brian Gordon s mother-in-law won the 50/50, congrats. We will be initiating two young men before our January meeting. The video initiation will begin at 6 p.m. while the regular meeting starts at 7 p.m. Please keep in mind that you must have a current 2018 membership card to attend. Our FS, Ken Staley will be available before the meeting to collect dues. God Bless, Ray Blust, Grand Knight FOURTH DEGREE The Charles Carroll Assembly hopes you and your family had a very faith filled Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!! A great time was had by all who attended the Assembly Christmas Party. The last monthly 50/50 for 2017 was won by James Eubanks. The attendance bowl would have been won by Robert Jones. Dues notices for calendar year 2018 are on their way. Please return them as soon as you can along with money for the monthly 50/50 drawings. The proceeds from these drawings helps the Assembly's support of our seminarians. You do not have to be a 4th Degree member to get into the drawing. The cost is $12 per ticket/per year and we draw a ticket every month. If you would like a ticket (or more) please see a 4th Degree member. Our next meeting will be January 16th at 7:30pm. Faithful Navigator Matt Koval MEMBERSHIP MATTERS Supreme is still conducting an awesome incentive for recruiters. A prize will be awarded to 10 couples to attend the World Meeting of Families in Dublin, Ireland with all expenses paid. Here s how it works: beginning December 1st, 2017, every time that you recruit a member into the Order through June 30th, 2018, your name will go into a drawing and on July 1st, 2018, ten names will be drawn at random. Family, friends, co-workers and fellow parishioners represent recruitment opportunities ask if they would like to join your council. Remember, it s not about the numbers, but membership matters because God wants us to take care of our families and live out our faith in love. TRAINING OPPORTUNITY The next Supreme Training Webinar, entitled Building Mission Through Your Parish, will be presented on January 3 rd at 8 pm. Don't just sit around and say "we don't know how to build a stronger council!" Join your brother knights from across the Order and attend the Building Mission through your Parish Webinar. You will also find all of the Webinars on Demand section there as well. Even if you can t attend live, registering will allow you to be able to access this presentation on demand at a future date. 3 Knights of Columbus Insurance Financial Check-Up for 2018 Where did 2017 go? It seems like it was summer yesterday and Thanksgiving was last week. I hope you and your family had a great finish to Hopefully, you ve been thinking about a few goals for I ve learned a great tip regarding resolutions. First, write them down. Commit your goals to paper and post it someplace you will see it often. Writing down a goal is the first step towards achieving it. Whether your goal is to exercise more, give more to charity, read more or watch less television, you re more likely to accomplish it if you write it down. Second, resolve to have an expert look at your finances. I recommend that you have a team of experts help you, and I would love to be the first you sit with. Let s schedule some time to meet together, and I, your professional Knights of Columbus insurance field agent, will provide an insurance check-up (at no cost!) that will evaluate your family s insurance protection (life, disability, long term care). Now might be the perfect time to fill any gaps. Keep in mind that unlike many other products, you don t just need money to obtain these types of insurance; you also need good health, and no one knows when your health could change. 5 Basic Catholic Beliefs Our profession of faith begins with God, for God is the First and the Last, the beginning and the end of everything. The Credo begins with God the Father, for the Father is the first divine person of the Most Holy Trinity; our Creed begins with the creation of heaven and earth, for creation is the beginning and the foundation of all God s works. Catechism of the Catholic Church, 198 The Nicene Creed Each Sunday Mass, Catholics recite together a profession of faith called the Nicene Creed or Credo. Credo is a name which comes from the very first words of the prayer in Latin: Credo in unum Deum (I believe in one God). It is called the Niceno-Constantinopolitan or Nicene Creed because it was approved by the bishops at the Councils of Nicaea and Constantinople. I believe in one God, the father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. for our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the father and the son, who with the father and the son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. 5

6 The Ten Commandments The curtness of the Ten Commandments is an evidence, not of the gloom and narrowness of a religion, but, on the contrary, of its liberality and humanity. It is shorter to state the things forbidden than the things permitted: precisely because most things are permitted, and only a few things are forbidden. G. K. Chesterton 1. I am the Lord your God; you shall not have strange gods before me. 2. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. 3. Remember to keep holy the Lord s Day. 4. Honor your father and your mother. 5. You shall not kill. 6. You shall not commit adultery. 7. You shall not steal. 8. You shall not bear false witness against thy neighbor. 9. You shall not covet thy neighbor s wife. 10. You shall not covet thy neighbor s goods. The Precepts of the Church The word precept comes from the Latin word praeceptum (to warn or to instruct). The precepts can be thought of as basic instructions or statutes given by the Church to illustrate the bare minimum obligations for all Catholics. You shall attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of obligation and rest from servile labor. You shall confess your sins at least once a year. You shall receive the sacrament of the eucharist at least during the Easter season. You shall observe the days of fasting and abstinence established by the Church. You shall help to provide for the needs of the Church. 6
