Congregational responses are printed in bold type. b GATHERING b PRELUDE CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen He is Risen. He is risen indeed. Christ is alive. He lives so that we too might dwell in newness of life. He lives to grant forgiveness and mercy to all. However, if we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Oh, God of the empty tomb: You have called us to honest confession and truth. Yet, we pretend that we are not in need of correction or repentance. We sometimes doubt that your mercy is enough to wash us and all people clean. Your first disciples shared generously with others, yet, we hold onto what you have given us out of fear and anxiety. You have called us to forgive others, but we hold onto animosity, anger, or resentment. We often love in word and speech, but fail in truth and in actions. Forgive us, Good Shepherd. Gather us into the arms of your mercy. We remain kneeling as the pastor offers God s absolution and forgiveness. Following absolution we stand for the hymn, facing the processional cross as we begin.

CHILDREN S SERMON (11:00 a.m.) b WORD b FIRST READING: ACTS 1:15-17, In those days Peter stood up among the believers (together the crowd numbered about one hundred twenty persons) and said, 16 Friends, the scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit through David foretold concerning Judas, who became a guide for those who arrested Jesus 17 for he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry. 21 So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us one of these must become a witness with us to his resurrection. 23 So they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias. 24 Then they prayed and said, Lord, you know everyone s heart. Show us which one of these two you have chosen 25 to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place. 26 And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias; and he was added to the eleven apostles.. Happy indeed are those who follow not the counsel of the wicked, nor linger in the way of sinners nor sit in the company of scorners, but whose delight is the law of the Lord and who ponder God s law day and night. REFRAIN They are like a tree that is planted beside the flowing waters, that yields its fruit in due season and whose leaves shall never fade; and all that they do shall prosper. Not so are the wicked, not so! REFRAIN For they like winnowed chaff shall be driven away by the wind. For the Lord guards the way of the just but the way of the wicked leads to doom. REFRAIN SECOND READING: 1 JOHN 5:9-13 9If we receive human testimony, the testimony of God is greater; for this is the testimony of God that he has testified to his Son. 10 Those who believe in the Son of God have the testimony in their hearts. Those who do not believe in God have made him a liar by not believing in the testimony that God has given concerning his Son. 11And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life. NEW CHURCH PICTORIAL DIRECTORY 2018 It's time again to publish a new church pictorial directory and we'd like to repeat the process used for the last one by having members send in their favorite family photo for inclusion. Many of you were spotted smiling for cameras by the flowered Easter cross earlier this month. It would be so easy get those pictures off your phones and into the directory by ing officemgr@salutheran.com! An even easier means would be to have your family's photo taken by one of the Communications Team after worship services during the month of May. We'll be in the narthex and gathering area ready to capture you in your Sunday best. We want all of our members to be included and will be making visits to our shut-ins so they too can continue to be recognized as a beautiful part of our community. If anyone would like to volunteer to help with this service, please let Beth Mullins or Paul Osmundson know. DONATION BOX IN THE GATHERING AREA Our 2018 WELCA Convention Project is for Lutheran Services of the Carolinas Love One Another Campaign. A box for donations will be placed in the Gathering Area for all who would like to help. Items needed: combs, toothbrushes, pens and pencils, socks (all sizes), sponges, Walmart and Target gift cards. Items will be delivered to the WELCA Convention, to be held at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Columbia on June 8-9. THRESHOLD SINGERS Volunteers needed to sing with hospice patients A local hospice house is interested in forming small groups of singers who would be available to sing occasionally, either at the Hospices Houses or at the homes of individual s under hospice care. These groups of two or three volunteers would sing to bring ease and comfort to those at the thresholds of living and dying. If you are interested in becoming a part of this ministry, please contact Jenny Walrath at or jwalrath@salutheran.com and she can give you more information. She potentially envisions St. Andrew s having two or three teams of volunteers that would rotate, and sing several times a year. God s Spirit Covers the World On Pentecost, the Holy Spirit was poured out on all nations. The disciples spoke in many languages. Quilts, because of their varied colors and patterns, are a wonderful image of the diversity of God's word and of the many peoples on whom the spirit was bestowed. The quilt will be our Pentecost image this year, and there will be some very creative, fun, exciting elements of worship, with a special guest choir along with our own at the 11:00 service.
