S T. ANDREW S Lutheran Church 1416 Broad River Road, Columbia, SC Third Sunday of Advent December 16, :30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. The Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW) is the red worship book found in your pew racks. Service music, indicated with a page number, can be found in the front portion of the book. Hymns, indicated by number, are found in the back portion of the book. Congregational responses are printed in bold type. PRELUDE CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS b GATHERING b All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, the Lord of Israel who comes to set us free, the mighty Savior who comes to show mercy, The Dawn from on high who guides us into peace. Amen. Let us come before God in confession. Silence for reflection and self-examination. To you, O God, we lift up our souls. You know us through and through; we confess our sins to you. Remember not our sins; remember us with your steadfast love. Show us your ways; teach us your paths; and lead us in justice and truth, for the sake of your goodness In Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. We remain kneeling as the Pastor offers words of absolution; God s forgiveness in grace, concluding as follows. Children of God, come with joy and draw water from the well of salvation. Remember the gift of baptism: your sin is washed away in the name of Jesus; you belong to Christ; you are anointed to serve. Stand up and raise your heads! The reign of God is near. Amen.

GATHERING SONG: Fling Wide the Door ELW Hymn 259 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. BLESSING OF THE ADVENT WREATH After the spoken blessing, we join in singing: PRAYER OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Stir up the wills of your faithful people, Lord God, and open our ears to the preaching of John, that, rejoicing in your salvation, we may bring forth the fruits of repentance; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. We sit.

b WORD b CHILDREN S SERMON (11:00 a.m.) FIRST READING: Zephaniah 3: Sing aloud, O daughter Zion; shout, O Israel! Rejoice and exult with all your heart, O daughter Jerusalem! 15The Lord has taken away the judgments against you, he has turned away your enemies. The king of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst; you shall fear disaster no more. 16 On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: Do not fear, O Zion; do not let your hands grow weak. 17 The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a warrior who gives victory; he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love; he will exult over you with loud singing 18 as on a day of festival. I will remove disaster from you, so that you will not bear reproach for it. 19I will deal with all your oppressors at that time. And I will save the lame and gather the outcast, and I will change their shame into praise and renown in all the earth. 20 At that time I will bring you home, at the time when I gather you; for I will make you renowned and praised among all the peoples of the earth, when I restore your fortunes before your eyes, says the Lord. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. FIRST SONG OF ISAIAH The following refrain will be sung first by the cantor and them by the congregation each time thereafter. Therefore you shall draw water with rejoicing from the springs of salvation. And on that day you shall say, give thanks to the Lord, and call upon his Name. REFRAIN Make his deeds known among the peoples; see that they remember that his Name is exalted. Sing the praises of the Lord, for he has done great things, and this is known in all the world. REFRAIN Cry aloud, inhabitants of Zion, Ring out your joy, for the great one in the midst of you is the Holy One of Israel. REFRAIN

SECOND READING: PHILIPPIANS 4:4-7 4Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. 5 Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. 6 Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. We stand. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: Savior of the Nations, Come The Holy Gospel according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. GOSPEL: LUKE 3:7-18 7John said to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Bear fruits worthy of repentance. Do not begin to say to yourselves, We have Abraham as our ancestor ; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. 9 Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 10And the crowds asked him, What then should we do? 11 In reply he said to them, Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise. 12 Even tax collectors came to be baptized, and they asked him, Teacher, what should we do? 13 He said to them, Collect no more than the amount prescribed for you. 14 Soldiers also asked him, And we, what should we do? He said to them, Do not extort money from anyone by threats or false accusation, and be satisfied with your wages. 15 As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, 16 John answered all of them by saying, I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. 18 So, with many other exhortations, he proclaimed the good news to the people. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

We sit. SERMON We stand and sing. HYMN OF THE DAY: Hark, the Glad Sound! ELW Hymn 239 NICENE CREED: Please turn to the back inside cover of your hymnal. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Each intercession will end with Lord in your mercy, to which we respond: Hear our prayer. b MEAL b PEACE The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. We greet one another with a gesture of peace using these or similar words: Peace be with you. We sit. OFFERTORY ANTHEM: As the Dark Awaits the Dawn As the dark awaits the dawn, so we await your light. O star of promise, scatter night, loving bright, loving bright, till shades of fear are gone. Carl Schalk As the blue expectant hour before the silvering skies, we long to see your day arise, whole and wise, whole and wise, O lucent Morning Star. As the moon reflects the sun until the night s decrease, may we your healing light release, living peace, living peace, unto your holy dawn. Shine your future on this place, enlighten every guest, that through us stream your holiness, bright and blest, bright and blest; come dawn, O Sun of grace.

OFFERTORY SONG THE GREAT THANKSGIVING 8:30: Spoken 11:00: Sung The thanksgiving continues with the preface for the season; the congregation responds:

THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. We sit.

LAMB OF GOD HOLY COMMUNION All are welcome to commune. Communion will be received at the altar rail by intinction; we receive the consecrated bread and dip it into the chalice. Those unable to partake of wine or wheaten bread are assured that the Church affirms our Lord s presence in, with, and under each element alone; however, gluten free wafers and grape juice are available. Please let the Pastor or Lay Assistant know of your need. COMMUNION HYMN

We will meet at Cici's pizza at 6 p.m. for a quick dinner buffet. Then we will head over to the Aldi's parking lot where we can pile into the St. Andrew's 15 passenger van or you can caravan along behind the van as we enter Saluda Shoals. At the end of the lights show, there is a place to park and options for families to go down the slide, get some smores, take a train ride, see Santa, and visit the craft shop. We will then load the van back up and head back to the Aldi's. Questions or comments - call Joe Cici's Pizza Address St Andrews Rd, Columbia, SC Saluda Shoals Address St. Andrews Road Columbia, SC BAPTISMAL PROMISE OPPORTUNITY We are in need of more individuals willing to lead children Sunday school classes, especially with the approaching cold and flu season. The curriculum provides activities for each week's lesson, which is lectionary based. Please let Mandy Glowacki know your availability (803) or mariglow1998@gmail.com. TRANSPORATION ON SUNDAY MORNINGS Can you help? Even ONCE during the whole year? Maybe once a month? Two very faithful members of our church need a ride. Loretta and Billy Eubanks cannot drive. Yet, over the years they have found a way to be with us. In fact, Loretta has been a part of St. Andrew's longer than anyone else in this community. She was baptized here as a baby! What a shame if she can't get a ride now. Charles and Betty Dawkins help when they can. The Eubanks live in Lexington, and like to come to Sunday School and 11:00 a.m. worship. If you do not know the Eubanks, you are in for a treat, and will get more than you give! Please call the office if you might be able to help. Or, you can simply call them. They are in our directory.
